VS 2012 could not start debugger error - visual-studio-2012

I hope some one can help me it is bothering me this issue for 2 days for now. When I try to debug an app I allays receive the following message:
Unable to start debugger error code(0x80040154), It this problem persists may be a faulted instalation. Please go to control panel add remove programs and reapir instalation.
This happened after installing the VS 2012 Update 2.
So I uninstalled the update 2 but the issue remained.
I did a VS repair, the Issue remain.
I did re install of the VS (uninstall-> re install from scratch) + the update 1 but after this, the VS could not start simply (VS stopped responding...checking solution on line...closing the app).
So I do not do a complete format of the PC because I have a lot of stuff in it.
If any one can suggest a way to resolve the issue I will be very grateful.
UPDATE:
Uninstall the update 2 of the VS 2012 and then start the repair tool, then install the Update 1, start the VS in safe mode, uninstall the extensions, and re install the exensions...it works...but do not install the update 2

I have similar problem. I cannot start debugger after installation update 2 for Visual Studio 2012.
I cannot find any dependency on other things. This ocuring only on my PC, another comupers in my office are OK although they have same HW and SW (OS and other programs installed from same deployment image).

This error is firing because of an administrator rights issue.
Please right click the shortcut of Visual Studio 2012 and click "Run as Administrator".
If you want to permanently enable "Run as Administrator" option:
Right click shortcut and select properties
Click Advanced
Check "Always run as administrator" option and click OK to close dialog box.

go to registration and delete microsoftvisualstudio registration file
Removed the registry entries.
Note that I did not delete or clean up HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0 which contained the license key
best regards

Visual Studio 2015 Preview - Keep IIS Express Running

I'm trying to get a decent development experience with Visual Studio 2015 Preview.
To do that I'd love to have my IIS Express running all the time instead of requiring me to start debugging.
Anyway to do that? Tried command line:
IISExpress.exe /path:pathmyproject/wwwroot
IISExpress.exe /site:SiteName
and
IISExpress.exe /path:pathtomyproject
First two give me:
Unable to locate project.json
Third one
HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden
Not exactly an answer, but if you can view in browser instead of Debug.
The command for view in browser is: CTRL+ SHIFT + W (or right click on project and select View -> View in broswer.)
IIS Express will start but will not close when you exit your browser.
Hope this helps, this is what I do (specially now that build/compile is no required with roslyn).
Similar to VS 2013, if you disable Edit and Continue IIS Express will continue to run when you stop your debug sessions.
Open the menu item Tools/Options, look for the Debugging/General option. Scroll down and uncheck "Enable Edit and Continue"
in the Debug menu > Start without debugging (Ctr + F5)
Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 adds the support to keep IIS Express Running
For ASP.NET Web Application projects, when "Enable Edit and Continue" checkbox is unchecked, the IIS Express process will no longer stop working every time you stop debugging.
Visual Studio Update 3 RC Release Notes
"Enable Edit and Continue" checkbox does not exist in visual studio 2015 update 2!this is best solution for this problem
I just unchecked Edit & Continue option under project properties -> Web -> Debugger.
I'm using VS2015. It is working for me.
This problem occurred to me when trying to run a cloned project. The solution that worked to me was installing Microsoft.NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2.
Go to Tools --> Extensions and Updates --> click Updates
Look for Microsoft.NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2 and install the update if it is available.

Visual Studio 2012 Install Fails: Program Compatibility Mode is on

I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop and every time I run the installer I get this error:
"Windows Program Compatibility mode is on. Turn it off and then try setup again."
I checked the file properties and compatibility mode was off. Googling found that changing the name to "vs_premium.exe" or "vs_ultimate.exe" or changing the registry keys might help, but the name changes had no effect, and there were no registry keys to delete. I have restarted my machine several times to no avail.
Changing to Visual Studio 2013 is not an option for me, as my work computer has Visual Studio 2012 on it which they will not update to 2013, and I need to work on my project on both computers.
The computer I am using has a Windows 8.1 HP Pavilion g6. I have installed Visual Studio 2013 for Windows Desktop, Web, and Windows, as well as the 30-day trial for Professional (which has recently expired). I have also installed Visual Studio 2012 for Windows Phone but I have not used it yet.
Previous posts are correct in that compatibility mode appears to be based entirely on file names. There is a simple method for determining precisely which name Windows expects:
Right-click the file, select Properties and navigate to the Details tab. There should be an entry labelled "Original filename". Simply rename the file accordingly and it should run happily.
Screenshot:
If you downloaded Visual Studio 2012 and Visual Studio 2013 at the same time and one was renamed with a "(0)" suffix (just as I did) then change the installer to the original name will probably fix it, because "somehow compatibility checking is based on file naming"
I just have to Rename the setup name. I rename the setup file to vs_ultimate and it worked.
In case you mounted it, first extract the content before you install. it worked for me.
Had the same issue installing vs_ultimate on Windows 10, It tells me to turn compatibility mode off which I didn't know to do. After reading all the solutions above without success, I was able to solve it on my own.
I mounted the .iso before installing which was giving me problem, but later as I extracted it into a desktop folder, it installed fine.
I couldn't find a solution, but I could find a workaround. I downloaded the offline installer (ISO) and ran that instead. It's not a solution, but it should work in this situation.
I ran into this problem and the solution for me was to rename the file back to its original name. I had downloaded it as "vs2012sdk_full.exe" but the original name was "vssdk_full.exe". When I ran it as "vs2012sdk_full.exe" I got the compatibility mode error. Once I renamed it back to the original "vssdk_full.exe" it worked.
Open The Run (Win+R) And type Services.msc.
Found Program Compatibility Assistant Service Then Disable Service and Stop it.
Open the Run (Win+R) And Type Gpedit.msc.
User configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Windows Components-->Application Compatibility
And check Enable button then restart system.
Run as administrator. And for my 2013 installer I renamed it to be
vs_professional.exe
And it worked.
In a round about way I discovered the problem on my system. Check the properties of the installer. Mine was blocked because it was downloaded from another system. Click unblock. Voila! If you can't find the location of the installer, run it again. When it fails, leave it running. Open task manager, right click the installer, then open file location. This will take you to the folder containing your installer.
mount the ISO file and run the setup as a from the disk.
I had the same issue, my solution was to run it in administrator mode and it seemed to work just fine.
Run as Administrator worked for me.
I had the same problem. I had run the installer from an ISO, reading from the DVD image.
The solution was to simply take the ISO and uncompress it as a .RAR into some folder, and everything worked.
Well, filename varies from versions to versions. Fix:
Right Click on file
Select Properties
Select "Details" tab
Rename that file to value of "Original Filename"
This is the solution:
Right Click on Visual Studio Setup Icon
Select Properties
Open Compatibility Tab
Check Run This Program In Compatibility Mode
Select Your Windows Version (ex:Windows 8)
Finally Click OK And Install Your Program Again

VMDebugger add-in crashes each time Visual Studio opens up

I'm experiencing the following error each time I open up an instance of VS 2012, for about a week
(so it's not due to the yesterday's Update 4).
Even if I click Yes, the error is shown again when I re-open Visual Studio.
Anyway, the VMWare debugger seems to be correctly loaded
(actually I don't use it, it came with VMWare workstation).
I can't isolate a single operation that caused the error to start appearing.
Anyone is experiencing the same error?
[Edit] See Attilas answer for a much easier solution producing the same result [/Edit]
For anyone who could not solve this problem by re-installing the VMWare plug-in but do not want to sacrifice all his VS settings, here is a solution that did work for me:
Export 'Menu and Command Bar Customizations' VS settings only using
Tools => Import and Export Settings... => Export selected environment settings
Deselect 'All Settings'
Select only 'All Settings/General Settings/Menu and Command Bar Customizations'
Open exported .vssettings file in a text editor, scroll to the end and remove the entry <add_toolbar Menu=... Name='VMware' .../> in the UserCustomizations section
Import edited .vssettings file using
Tools => Import and Export Settings... => Import selected environment settings
and restart Visual Studio to check if the error has gone.
I know this is an old thread, but I solved this problem with a rather simple step. Had the same scenario, clicking Yes in the popup window didn't change a thing.
What worked for me: you should start VS as an administrator, wait for the popup window and click Yes. After that the popup never came up again (even when VS was run as a non-administrator). So there was no need for me to uninstall the VMWare pluging (or the whole VMWare WS).
Run the VMware Workstation installer
Choose Modify/Change
Uncheck Visual Studio Plugin
Problem gone!
Run the VMware Workstation installer
Choose Modify/Change
Check Visual Studio Plugin
Problem back again!

Lemmy
one possible solution:
Tools => Import and Export Settings => Reset all settings
seems to work for me.
VS 2013
Tools > Customize.. > Toolbars
Here I selected VMware and clicked Delete button.
I really don't use this plugin, this was the easiest solution for me.
None of the solutions here worked for me since I have already uninstalled vmware a long time ago and I was not willing to re-install it again.
MSDN suggests that there should be a registry key under
Root\Software\Microsoft\Visual Studio\...\AddIns\...
for VMdebugger, just delete that entry (the whole folder) and it'll be gone.
This worked for me:
completely uninstall VMWare workstation, reinstall it (select or deselect the VS plugin as you wish)
old school
If the option to install for all users was requested these Registry entries must also be removed.
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config\Addins\VMDebugger.Connect
HKEY_USERS.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0_Config\AddIns\VMDebugger.Connect
They correspond to the following HKCU entries. Hunt and kill.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\11.0_Config\Addins\VMDebugger.Connect
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\12.0_Config\Addins\VMDebugger.Connect
From VS2012 menu bar select [Tools] [Add-in Manager]
Then check mark the radio box to install VMDebugger.
Worked on my system:
Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2012
Version 11.0.61030.00 Update 4
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 4.5.51209
Installed Version: Professional
Visual Studio Integrated Virtual Machine Debugger

Visual Studio 2012 crashes when trying to update, repair, deinstall

My copy of Visual Studio 2012 is instable. It starts up and I can load projects, compile and run them. But from time to time it crashes randomly. It now also crashes when I try to add a new windows form to a project. But the crashes are independent from the project loaded.
My first idea was to install all new updates but if I go to the updates & extensions section it opens the dialog box and crashes 1 second afterwards. I then thought I might deinstall it and reinstall VS 2012 or 2013. But I also cannot deinstall it. If I go to windows programs to deinstall it I can click on the change button, but after this the installation program crashes. I also tried to download the VS 2013 preview and install it but this also crashes before showing a dialog box of window.
So I don't know how to proceed. Does anybody else have similar problems?
Try running Visual Studio in Safemode (devenv /safemode) or run it with logging turned on (devenv /log) the logs will be written to a folder in your user profile. Also check the Eventlog to see whether there's a error report. There should be 2 events logged when Visual Studio crashes. One "Application Error" and one ".NET Runtime Error". The latter will provide information about the stack trace that causes the crash:
When you try to uninstall Visual Studio, first remove update 1, 2 or 3, then repair or remove the whole thing. If uninstall fails, i'm afraid you'll need repave the machine to get it back in a supportable state. When you uninstall an update, you always need to repair Visual Studio itself before re-applying the updates.
Try removing all addins (Resharper, NDepend, etc) and extensions (either from the Visual Studio Updates and Extensions window or by deleting them from the Visual Studio or User profile folder).
Try resetting settings and add-in settings (devenv /ResetSettings) and (devenv /ResetSkipPkgs), try rebuilding all templates (devenv /setup).
You can even attach one Visual Studio instance as a debugger for the other to see where the exception occurs. Sometimes it can give you valuable information, sometimes the crash just doesn't happen because the actual issue is timing related.
If all else fails, open a support call with Microsoft, file a bug on Connect or do a clean re-install of your system.
Judging from you Error message you're running the Visual Studio 2012 Web Developer Express edition, instead of devenv, try wdexpress from a normal (windows) commandline window.
Another common issue that can make Visual Studio very unstable, is a corruption of the Add-in cache. Clearing it will trigger Visual Studio to rebuild it for you.

Error GenerateAppxPackageRecipe task was not given a value for the required parameter "ProjectDir"

I want to build my first application in visual studio 2012, but I get this error
Error 1 The "GenerateAppxPackageRecipe" task was not given a value for the required
parameter "ProjectDir".
TestHelloWorld
I ran into this same error recently. I have been experimenting with VS2012 Update 1, installing and uninstalling to test builds. I suspect that install, uninstall, and other fiddling caused the problem -- I am unsure exactly what state I was in when this error occurred. So, I did the following:
Uninstalled the VS2012 Update 1 update.
Uninstalled VS2012 Express.
Uninstalled VS2012 Ultimate.
Rebooted.
Installed VS2012 Express.
Installed VS2012 Ultimate.
Cleaned my project working copy.
After following this sequence, I opened up a Windows Store app solution again, and I was able to successfully build the solution again.
It's a problem with VS2012 Update 1. Working on a solution, but in the meantime, you can simplify the steps: just remove Update 1 and repair the VS install, like this:
Go to Control Panel->Programs and Features.
Click "View Installed Updates"
Select VS2012 Update 1 and Uninstall it.
Now click "Uninstall a program".
Select Visual Studio 2012 and click Change.
Click Repair.
Reboot.
