Guys I need your help here,
I got a new project in PHP to make a website, basic functionality will be : admin can upload songs and videos from backend. Frontend will display songs and videos, categories and other music related stuffs. I ll be using CI or CakePHP but my main concern is about hosting. Traffic will be 5K users per day. Now what is the best hosting solution, where users will stream songs and videos online. Do I need to buy dedicated server or cloud or VPS will do?
Also if you have made this kind of website then suggest me some guidlines.
For a daily 5K users, it will always be better to go for dedicated as it is a server solely for you. So if tomorrow the number of viewers increase you wouldn't have to face any slow loading times (as in cloudhosting) and create a bad impression for users who would also leave your site and not return.

I am working on a startup which basically serves website. Sorry, I can't reveal much details about the startup.
I need some ideas on how spammers and cralwer devs think on attacking some website. And if possible, then a way to prevent such attacks too.
We have come up with some basic ideas like:
1. Include a small JS file in the sites that would send an ACK on our servers ones all the assets are loaded. Like some crawlers/bots only come to websites and download specific stuff like images or articles. In such cases, our JS won't be triggered. And when we study our logs, which will have a record of resources requested by the particular IP and if out JS was triggered or not. We can then whitelist or blacklist IP's based on the study.
2. Like email services do, we will load a 1x1 px image on the client side via an API call. In simple words, we won't add the "img" tag directly in out HTML, but rather a JS that calls an API on our server that returns the image to the client.
3. We also have a method to detect Good bots like that of google which indexes our pages. So we can differentiate between good bots and bad bots that just waste our resources.
We are at a very basic level. Infact, all our code does right now is logs the IP's and assets requested by that IP in elasticsearch.
And so we need ideas on how people spam/crawl websites via cralwers/bots/etc. So we can come up with some solution. And if possible, please also mention the pros and cons and ways to defend against your ideas too.

This is probably the wrong area of StackExchange to ask this sort of question. However ...
The first thing you should do is get prepared to scale horizontally instead of vertically. If you keep growing you will soon grow out of any single server that you purchase.
Instead, what you need to do is start looking at ways to modify your website to be able to work over multiple systems. If you're experiencing load issues on the server you currently have, spin up another one of the exact same instance and move the database to that server, so you will then have two -- one dedicated to the database (which will really help it do its job) and one dedicated to serving traffic.
From there look at how you can scale in to multiple web processes, databases and add caching layers.
You can add cloudflare.com as your DNS service which will help you out by better caching your assets, but most importantly they will deliver a technical issues page to your users if your site does fall over at any stage. This is really helpful for saving face, because they will get an actual page with a message instead of a continually loading white-page.
Look at using services like digitalocean.com or linode.com (both very affordable and great staff) where you can easily add/remove resources as you need them.
I am attempting to serve paid videos to the users of my website, which is using php and is hosted on AWS.
I was wondering if:
1) anyone has successfully managed to serve video content through CloudFront securely? No matter what I try, FlashDownloadPlayer has managed to download the video.
2) will the video I upload automatically play in all devices/platforms regardless of input raw file I use ? I wasn't able to confirm this through AWS documentation.
Regardless, any ideas to make video downloading extremely difficult (atleast not through flashDownloadPlayer) would really be appreciated.
My videos are stored in AWS S3.

Yes you can do this through Cloudfront and have it be just as fast as Youtube, with a CDN on a similar scale as Google. The difference being you can make Cloudfront private and encrypted as you mention. For example, we host dozens of confidential online videos behind our business Intranet and Extranet site. Obviously the site is password protected, and the videos needed to be private. Cloudfront let's you encrypt the video and embed inside a video player such as JWPlayer. This was the only way we could pass our security audit, while still serving massive video content and have it be fast. It sounds quite involved, but we followed a great guide in this tutorial and got this going in a few hours. Very straight forward.

My webhost is aking me to speed up my site and reduce the number of files calls.
Ok let me explain a little, my website is use in 95% as a bridge between my database (in the same hosting) and my Android applications (I have around 30 that need information from my db), the information only goes one way (as now) the app calls a json string like this the one in the site:

this page has some images and jquery so I think this are the ones having a lot of memory usage, they have told me to use some code to create a cache of those files in the person browser to save memory (that is a little Chinese to me since I don't understand it) can some one give me an idea and send me to a tutorial on how to get this done?. Can the webview in a Android app keep caches of this files?

Using a CDN or content delivery network would be an easy solution if it worked well for you. Essentially you are off-loading the work or storing and serving static files (mainly images and CSS files) to another server. In addition to reducing the load on your your current server, it will speed up your site because files will be served from a location closest to each site visitor.
There are many good CDN choices. Amazon CloudFront is one popular option, though in my optinion the prize for the easiest service to setup is CloudFlare ... they offer a free plan, simply fill in the details, change the DNS settings on your domain to point to CloudFlare and you will be up and running.
With some fine-tuning, you can expect to reduce the requests on your server by up to 80%
I use both Amazon and CloudFlare, with good results. I have found that the main thing to be cautious of is to carefully check all the scripts on your site and make sure they are working as expected. CloudFlare has a simple setting where you can specify the cache settings as well, so there's another detail on your list covered.

I am working on an App that will have a bunch of pictures and videos the user will need to have. The app's mantra is having these videos and pictures available on demand and on the go. However, I am concerned about the app being too fat (big), in essence turning off some customers who prioritize size over substance. The preference has always been to have the customer be able to access these videos from anywhere regardless of 3g/wifi (i.e. local on the device). What are the really good options? Assuming I choose to elect to go the non-local route (i.e. using wifi/3g), what are my options there as well? Please advice. The size of the videos/pics could be up to 1.5GB.
The usual approach seems to be to download and store the videos on demand. A lot of the apps I've seen allow the user to manage the stored videos themselves so that they can remove videos if they aren't going to use them again.
