Alright. I'm having no luck. So I figured I'd see if you all could help make some sense of this issue.
I've inherited a site that previously had a lot of different subdomains, which have now all been written into the .htaccess file to rewrite as subdirectories (i.e., blog.site.com becomes site.com/blog).
To avoid duplicate content issues, I also need to rewrite all site.com URL's as www.site.com. And even though the current rules look good to me, they're apparently not rewriting all the subdirectories of the domain. (I've never been that great with RegEx, so that could be part of the problem.)
Here are the current rules from .htaccess:
#---------------------------------
# Start rewrite engine
#---------------------------------
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteCond %{PATH_INFO} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^localhost$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\..+$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^blog\..+$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^docs\..+$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
#---------------------------------
# Rewrite some of our subdomains
#---------------------------------
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog\.site\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule (.*)$ "http://www.site.com/blog/$1" [R=301,QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^docs\.site\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule (.*)$ http://www.site.com/docs/$1 [R=301,QSA,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^wiki\.site\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule (.*)$ http://www.site.com/wiki/$1 [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
#---------------------------------
# Wordpress specific - do not place anything below this line
#---------------------------------
# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress
(Obviously, some of them exist to allow for a local dev environment, etc).
Any thoughts on why I'm not seeing site.com/directory rewritten as www.site.com/directory? What am I missing here?

With your shown samples, please try following Rules file. Also make sure to clear your browser cache before testing your URLs.
Have your root htaccess Rule file like as follows:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^3pmix\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L,NE]
</IfModule>
And have your sub directory htaccess Rules file as follows:
RewriteOptions InheritBefore
RewriteEngine ON
RewriteRule ^classes - [NC,F,L]
RewriteRule (?:config\.php|db\.php|functions\.php) - [NC,F,L]
I have also fixed flags and regex in your htaccess files.
Rewrite base was missing that is why was not finding the root url of the website
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php [L]
</IfModule>
I have been using the following .htaccess for some time now to redirect non-https to https:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
This week however an SEO expert told me this gives 2 redirects for links like this:
www.example.com/test
The first to http s ://www.example.com/test
The second to http s ://www.example.com/test /
Apparantly this is bad for SEO so I have tried adding a / to the last line, this doesn't work for files, e.g.
www.example.com/test.php => https://www.example.com/test.php/
I have done some searching but I can't seem to find a solution for both issues. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
How about adding a check for the directory in the rule (one for directories and one for files):
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
# for directories without trailing slashes
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} [^/]$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}/ [R=301,L]
# for everything else
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
However, there's a good chance this won't work since the redirect from /test to /test/ isn't happening via Rewrite, but via mod_dir's DirectorySlash directive. If you really want to just make this one redirect (I don't think the impact is that serious), then you can turn DirectorySlash off and have that redirect happen via mod_rewrite instead:
DirectorySlash Off
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
# for directories without trailing slashes
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} [^/]$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}/ [R=301,L]
# for everything else
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]
# Add trailing slashes for directories that have them missing
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} on [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} [^/]$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ %{REQUEST_URI}/ [R=301,L]
</IfModule>
I would like to re-write this url here;
site.com/product.php?s=electricity-at-work-regulations
to
site.com/courses/electricity-at-work-regulations
so change product.php to courses and generally tidy the url up.
Is this possible?

Yes but it would be better the other way around.
You should always call site.com/courses/electricity-at-work-regulations within your application and reroute it to site.com/product.php?s=electricity-at-work-regulations. Something like
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^(courses)/([a-zA-Z\-]+)$ product.php?s=$2 [L]
I have created a new Wordpress site that will replace a multi-domain website.
Server redirections has been done on different domains to point all of them to the same path.
I need do redirect pages based on the parent domain and also, redirect specific domain pages to new specific domain pages .
For example, when "www.mysite-example.com.au/contact" is requested it should redirect to "mysite.com.au/contact-us" and also "www.mysite-example.com.au/contact/form" should redirect to "mysite-example.com.au/request-contact-form"
Here is my current htaccess where I'm doing global redirection
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.abilitypeople.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abilitypeople.co.uk/ [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.abilitypeople.co.uk$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abilitypeople.co.uk/ [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.abilitypeople.com.au$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://abilitypeople.com.au/ [R=301,L]
# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress
Does any one know how to create these redirections on the same htacces
"www.mysite-example.com.au/contact" -> "mysite.com.au/contact-us"
"www.mysite-example.com.au/contact/form" -> "mysite-example.com.au/request-contact-form"
"www.mysite-example.co.uk/contact" -> "mysite.co.uk/contact-us"
"www.mysite-example.co.uk/contact/form" -> "mysite-example.co.uk/request-contact-form"
By the way, thanks to anubhava for his help
You can have your rules like this:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?abilitypeople\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://abilitypeople.co.uk%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L,NE]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.(abilitypeople\.(?:co\.uk|com\.au))$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^ http://%1%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L,NE]
RewriteRule ^contact/?$ contact.php [L,QSA]
I have an issue that's too complex for me to handle, but I'm betting someone has had to do this before, so please let me hear from you. ;)
Here's the situation:
I've got 1 main domain with 3 subdirectories that are nested within each other
(from top to bottom)
http://main-domain.com
then
http://main-domain.com/company-name/
then
http://main-domain.com/company-name/blog/
There's currently 3 .htaccess files -- 1 in each of the 3 directories shown above.
What's the problem?
Instead of having www.main-domain.com/company-name/blog/whatever, I'd like to have main-domain.com/blog/whatever
So, I want to drop the www AND more importantly, drop the middle subdirectory; i.e. /company-name/
I hope that the following examples will help to illustrate the point.
http://main-domain.com/company-name/index.php should be changed to http://main-domain.com/index.php
http://main-domain.com/company-name/blog/my-first-article/ should be changed to http://main-domain.com/blog/my-first-article/
Why do I need this?
I need a shorter URL that is more SEO-friendly. I have too many backlinks that use the 'old' urls, so I need to mod-rewrite them all.
Here are My Current 3 htaccess files
root htaccess: main-domain.com
#Bypass InoCore Templating System

Your correct and compact root .htaccess should be like this:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^info.php - [L]
# match all the domains in single condition while www. is optional
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?(domain1|domain2|domain3|main-domain)\.(com|tld)$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^company-name/(.*)$ http://www.domain.tld/$1 [R=301,L,NC,NE]
R=301 will redirect with https status 301
L will make last rule
NE is for no escaping query string
NC is for ignore case comparison
$1 is your REQUEST_URI matching group
