I'm trying to deploy a portal ext plugin, that only overrides the loginpostaction to fix the nullpointerexception bug when trying to enable live.users tracker.

When I deploy in local environment this works ok, but when I deploy it on a production server, nothing happens. The log shows that the deploy is okay, but the portal continues to use the old class.
What am I doing wrong?
Am assuming that you have written another EXT plugin to fix some NullPointerException existing in your previous plugin.
Its important to remember that once an EXT plugin has been deployed, some of its files are copied inside the Liferay installation, so the only way to remove its changes is to redeploy an unmodified Liferay application again.
Also, there is a tip at the end of this link
"After creating an Ext plugin, remove all of the files added by default that are not necessary for the extension. This is important because Liferay keeps track of the files deployed by each Ext plugin and it won't allow deploying two Ext plugins if they override the same file to avoid collisions. By removing any files not really necessary from an ext plugin it will be easier to use along with other Ext plugins."
These concepts might be helpful in finding your problem.

When using selfhost .Net Core 2.x, all the build artifacts are statically served by default, since the default directory is the same place as the binary/exe.
This means if one knows the names of the dlls, they can just request
them at /Whatever.dll, or they can also get any config files by name,
i.e. appSettings.
If you change things so that that the root directory is different or that directory is not in the VFS, /metadata stops working.
Is it possible to have /metadata work, but not allow the service's dlls etc to be statically served?
I have tried restricting the paths. This will keep settings / dlls / exes from serving, but the /metadata page will come up completely blank.
The /metadata page isn't related to the static file directory location, you may have caused a Startup Exception that's impacted how it works. If you can put together a stand-alone project on GitHub which shows the issue I can investigate.
Only extensions in Config.AllowFileExtensions can be served, you can remove .dll from being served with:
Config.AllowFileExtensions.Remove("dll");
.exe aren't servable by default, if you can download them you might be downloading them with .NET Core's static file handler instead.
It's common practice to have the WebRoot outside of the project root which for .NET Core is typically /wwwroot.

What I ended up doing at first was to add a .UseWebRoot() onto the
builder, then later switched from the selfhost ServiceStack template
to the web template per Mythz's suggestion. The web template was
set up in a way that solved my problem.

I am working through the example in the Liferay documentation; I have created and built the little greeting applet and gotten no errors at compile or build. I don't get any errors at deployment, either, but the application is showing up.
The deployment says it is copying my war file to portal-dir/deploy. I have determined that I can copy the war file there, though something (I guess in the server) removes it after a few seconds. But when I go to look at it in a browser off my local server, it is not there.
Does anyone know what I should look at to fix this?
No need to fix anything here -this is how autodeployment works. Web archives found in deploy directory are removed from there, extracted, processed by Liferay and in the end you should be able to find them in ${catalina.home}\webapps (assuming that you're using a Tomcat bundle).
I'm attempting to use Web Deploy to Publish a Web Application.
I want Visual Studio to delete any files that no longer exist, so I've checked the "Remove additional files at destination" setting in my Publishing profile.
However, I want VS to ignore the /Content/uploads folder, as it contains contents that my users have uploaded. Naturally, the contents are different in my development site than they are in the live site.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to discover a way to make Visual Studio ignore this folder when publishing (it wants to delete all of the content, since it doesn't exist in the project).
Does anyone know of a way to exclude specific folders on the target site from being examined by Web Deploy?
I had a similar problem, wanting to keep some files in the deployment package even though they're not part of the project.
Try to create a custom MSBuild target for this, that works for me.

The step-by-step seems complicated, but it's not that bad .....
1a) download and unpack the plugins sdk for the version of liferay you want to use. All the downloads are on the sf page http://lportal.sourceforge.net/
1b) make sure you have the latest version of ant and the JDK version that matches your liferay version (1.5.x or 1.6.x)
2) there are a few main folders in the kit. Change into the "themes" folder and run the create script there in this format (on linux or mac you'll need to make the .sh files executable)
c:\liferay\plugins\themes >create my-name "My Theme Description"
linux/mac $>./create.sh my-name "My Theme Description"
This will create a skeleton theme in a folder called my-name-theme and a folder within it called _diff.
Make whatever modifications you want WITHIN THE _diff FOLDER. (except changes to the properties file within WEB-INF)
Once you've made changes run "ant compile" from within the my-name-theme folder and the sdk will run through it's paces and spit out a .war file to the "dist" folder in the sdk root. You can upload this to the site using the plugin installer
OR ... if you configure the sdk to know where your development server is you can run "ant deploy" from the theme's folder and let the autodeploy magic in liferay do the work.
Once the theme is installed just assign it using the "look and feel" tab in the "manage pages" tool.
TIP : Make most of your changes to the custom.css file .... keeps things easy to upgrade.
TIP : Development is really slow for CSS if you do this for every change .... so if you're running a dev server add a style tag just before the end of the head tag that points into your _diffs/css folder. href="file:///...../_diffs/custom.css". This way whatever edits you make will be compiled into the next version of the war and will override the currently installed version without reuploading. make sure to remove the link before you put it on a live server.
The liferay.com documentation is great and there's a "themer's guide" i can't find the link to right now that got me started.
We've done a number of LifeRay customizations for various companies but your question is too vague for us to answer. If you are just looking to change a few colours and fonts then editing the CSS is fine, but if you are looking to completely change the layout then you need to delve in to the template files and start working with the XHTML.
Provide more details and we might be able to prod you in the right direction :D
IMO theme development for liferay can be quite slow to start with. I have found two different approach quite useful. It works for me, might work for you as well.
If you edit files inside _diff folder AFAIK you have to deploy every
time two see the changes , which can be quite frustrating for
front-end developers. An approch can be edit the css file directly
in tomcat/themename folder. Copy the changed every couple of hours
or so in the _diff folder and deploy. In my case the CSS stays in
C:\liferay-portal-6.1.0\tomcat-7.0.23\webapps\\css\
Also if you are aware liferay supports Sass now. So it you are writing Sass "deploy" may be you most likely option. But I have also figured out a way to speed up that process. Install ruby (if you are in windows, in Mac its preinstalled) > Install Compass > and create a blank compass project. Start "compass watch" . Open bothe scss file and the compiled css file in your IDE. "compass watch" will poll for changes in your scss file and put the compiled output in the css file. Every while you may copy the css output in the css file in theme folder or directly in firebug or web-inspector in chrome/safari.
I have found these are faster dev practice than deploying everytime or completely developing on firebug/web-inspector.
Also if anyone know of better method, specially things like only CSS/JS deploy (or simple copy for that matter if one is not writing Scss), please let us know.
You can make your custom style with the liferay plugins sdk, which can be found here: http://www.liferay.com/downloads/liferay-portal/additional-files
There is a themes folder included, in which you can create a new theme. Liferay generates here a basic theme as a boilerplate, which then you can customize and deploy to your liferay installation.
You can
mvn archetype:generate
then select “liferay-theme-archetype (Provides an archetype to create Liferay themes.)” et voilà you are ready tu customize your theme.
Best practice recommends that you make all your custom themes using only the custom.css file, and that you not override any of the templates unless absolutely necessary. This will make future upgrades far easier, as you won't have to manually modify your templates to add support for new Liferay features.
Deploy the newly created theme using
mvn clean package liferay:deploy
CruiseControl.NET service needs to be restarted to pick up changes in the projects configuration files.
I find this very annoying, not sure if it's a bug or it's the way it works.
Is there any way to overcome this issue in people's experience?
If your projects are separated in a different file from ccnet.config, then you need to restart the service unless you touch the actual ccnet.config.
We use ENTITY with SYSTEM file reference in ccnet.config for our projects, so we're in the same boat. I'm happy to pay the price for easier project maintenance, as it's easy to script a restart:
net stop CCService
net start CCService
IISRESET
If you wanted to completely automate this, and had your projects under source control, then you could trigger an update and restart whenever your project files are touched.
There was a bug in CC.Net prior to 1.4.4 if you were using a pre-processor include it did not reload the configuration when an included ccnet.config file was modified.
That was a bug that I reported and it is fixed in CC.Net 1.4.4 and greater.
Also, keep in mind that if a build is running and there is a change to the configuration it will not take place until that build is in an idle state.
How are you updating your config files? By hand? Mine always recognizes and adjusts. Is your config file in source control and designed to pull it down and replace the file? This for me requires a kick. How I ended up fixing it was have my project pull it down to a seperate folder. THen I call ccnet.exe -validate on it to make sure it is well formed, then I copy it over ontop of the current config file. CC.NET recognizes the changes and loads in the new config
Exceptions: If cc.net is currently running a project, it will not recognize the changes till that project has completed.
If your ccnet.config has errors, it will not ever recognize the changes and keep running the old version it has stored in memory. (However when CC.NET does restart it will try to parse the error filled config and choke.

Do you mean you are using linked files, that is the ccnet.config file has links to the independent project files.
If so then they are not picked up, it's mentioned in the documentation that it doesn't watch the sub-files.
Internally we have modified our CruiseControl.net so that our ccnet.config is optionally a directory - and we can drop shortcuts to our project config files into that directory. We put watches on the directory, the files or shortcuts in the directory and all of the targets of the shortcuts. That means we have our project config files in ClearCase and just drop a shortcut into the ccnet.config directory.
I've just spent half a day or so moving from 1.2 to 1.4.2 dropping our changes into the new version for our internal use. We don't own our code, our client does and so it has to stay internal :(
I have never experienced this. Whenever I change the configuration files, the CruiseControl.NET service seems to automatically re-read them.
I'm using Version 1.3 of CC.NET.
Update:
In the service's config file (ccservice.exe.config), there is a setting to enable/disable watching the ccnet.config file for changes:

Make sure this is set to true.
