I have a requirement to build a widget container which is having behavior of expandable, collapsible, configurable widget title and content displayed in the widget with the configurable source as SharePoint WebParts (OOB and third party web parts).
Need to predefine the page layout to have widgets with 3 (rows) * 2 (columns) matrix, where user can configure each widget with the source as the SharePoint web part (document list, image rollover, third party forums web part etc.) and personalize their dashboard.
I don't know the possibility of implementing this requirement in SharePoint 2010 as i am new to it.
could anyone please help me in making me understand the implementation perspective of how we can build generic widget component with the source as a SharePoint web part.

I have to add a "Content Editor" web part to a list view. The "Content Editor" is required to implement some java script and a html textbox.
The problem is that after adding the web part to the list view the dropdown to switch your current view gets lost. It doesnt matter where you add the web part or if you try it with the designer or IE.
Do you have any ideas on how to solve this? Or is there another way to implement java script into a listview without adding a new web part?
This is the dropdown I mean:
Its a known issue with SharePoint 2010.
You can modify the page using SharePoint Designer to put it back.

My company has also produced a free add-on that will do this for a whole site.

I have a requirement for changing the way bread crumbs looks in sharepoint. Please note that the data source will still be sharepoint but i need to generate the html little differently than the one displayed by sharepoint.
for example, if you are in a custom list, sharepoint displays as site > custom list > all items.
I neeed to display site, custom list and all items (no change in the items that are got from sharepoint). The only change will be, the user interface will be generated with a combination of html ul tags with some custom css?
Can someone suggest me the best approach?
Thanks
The visual appearance of the SiteMapPath control that displays a breadcrumb can be modified by setting the attributes of the control or by configuring the templates that are available for the control. I think that the CssClass and NodeTemplate properties is what you need.

To modify the content of the breadcrumb you need to create a custom site map provider inheriting from SPContentMapProvider.

I want to place the RSS Viewer web part into a page layout I've created.
In the Sharepoint Designer (Sharepoint 2010) using the "Advanced Edit Mode" I tried to add the RSS Viewer web part but I cannot find it in the list. Under "Insert>Web part" I find many other web parts but the one I need is missing, also under "More web parts..." it cannot be found.
The web part is installed (I activated the feature). The web part can manually be added to a page into a web part zone when I don't use the Designer but edit the page directly in the browser but of course this is not what I need as I have to put it in the page layout.
Anyone got an Idea why the web part is not selectable/visible in the list?
As I've learned not all web parts are available in this listing.
The workaround would be to manually add the desired web part to a webpart zone on the page (not in the designer) and then open the page in the designer so that you can copy/paste the web part relevant code to the page layout of your desire.
I want to create a deployable .wsp Web Part and I want to fetch a Custom List and show it in an Html Table inside that web part.
I know how to create a .wsp web part, and I can also create the table overriding the RenderContents or CreateChildControls methods of WebPart class.
But I want to know the easy and best method for outputting an Html Table in a WebPart.
Should I use a UserControl so that, I can add any Asp.Net controls inside it and then load it in the Web Part ??
Please tell me any solutions ?
Puneet i would recommend using Data View webparts which uses xslt to customize the view in which a list data is rendered.
You can take help of SharePoint Desginer to add a Data View Web Part.

Check out this video. It shows how to build a Visual Web Part (one that uses a user control for UI) in Visual Studio 2008 and shows how to bind data from a list to a GridView control.

I have a website in Sharepoint 2007 (it is a publishing portal).
I want to create a site with more specific info than what it comes with Sharepoint.
You know, when you create a new site, the only info you can enter is title and URL.
I would need an image and a description.
The solution is not a custom list, because i need to have pages inside and other lists.
How can i extend this site list?
Write an application page or web part that creates the new site. Programmatically update it with what users enter in your custom form.
Creating the site
The SPWebCollection.Add() method creates the site from a site definition. Create a custom definition that includes the site columns, content types and lists required. These will then be created as part of the site.
Further customisations
This won't perform all customisations however - for the rest develop a feature receiver. On activation it will run any arbitrary code on your new site.
For example as you are using a publishing site, retrieve its default page with the DefaultPage property. This is an SPFile object which has an Item property that can be edited like any other SPListItem. Update the image field and description field for the item based on its content type. The page will then render these properties.
All of the above can be wrapped in an SPLongOperation for a nicer user experience.
There are other options as well, for example the SPWebProvisioningProvider. The two separate steps above of creating a site definition and activating a feature receiver could be tied into one with this.
There is more information on the above techniques (plus others) and their pros and cons in part 3 and part 4 of this series by Raymond Mitchell.
