Using Keyboard Maestro 5, I want to be able to simulate holding a specific key for a specific amount of time for one of my macros. I am not sure if this is currently possible, and I have yet to find a work around. Any help would be appreciated in how this may be done.
An old post, but a common question about Keyboard Maestro.
Good news and bad news.
Bad news first:
The developer of Keyboard Maestro (currently version 7) says,
"No, Keyboard Maestro cannot press and hold any button or key."
Now the good news.
Another poster on that forum says:
Karabiner is perfect ... Define a key combo in Karabiner and map this to your KM macro.
Here is the link to that topic on the Keyboard Maestro forum.

recently I bought a wireless keyboard from Lidl:
SilverCrest
IAN 377704_2101 SPCC 2 A1
Model Nr.: HG08233A
Everything works great, but there's some setting that releases the button after it was being pressed for 22 sec. I know it's a time-related setting because I was playing with the key repetition setting and no matter how fast/slow it was typing(repeating the same key over and over), it stopped after 22.XX sec. (measured on my watch, so that's why .XX).
Has someone any idea how to turn that off, so the button stays pressed till I release it? It's making the keyboard useless for gaming.
Filter keys: OFF
Sticky keys: OFF
Toggle keys: OFF
I have one more wireless keyboard from ConnectIt and it doesn't have that issue, so it must be something drivers/settings related.
I wanted to use it as a replacement for my current ConnectIt keyboard, but the purpose is development (which is great for) and gaming (which is impossible due to key releases).
I've tried to look into registry, but I wasn't able to find anything.
Have a nice evening, and thanks for any ideas ;)
I'm developping a web application and i intend to use mouse and some keyboard shortcuts, and if possible, use modal keys (Ctrl / Shift / Alt).
I've noticed a lot a conflicts with modern browsers/OS. Here are some examples you may know:
Ctrl+S
Ctrl+F
Shift+R : refreshes the page on firefox
Alt+left click : moves a window on linux
Ctrl+J : opens the download tab in chrome
I can't find what shortcuts (with modal keys) i can use safely in my application. Is there a list somewhere of a rule to follow?
You could have a look at this, which is a rather exhaustive list of used shortcuts.
However your question has already been asked here and here and it seems there is no such list.
Try this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts
My suggestion would to throw something unique in the shortcut for example:
Say you needed to bookmark something quickly, chromes is ctrl+D, instead i would do ctrl+shift+m or ctrl+alt+m
Even still you might run into duplicate shortcuts, but going with something unique will give you the best results.
Hope this helps.
I'm writing a WinRT game for Windows 8, in C#, using the excellent MonoGame. I've reached the part where the user has achieved a high score and needs to enter their name. This is causing me more pain than I'd anticipated so I thought I'd ask for help.
First of all, is there a simple "enter some text" function that I can call, similar to Guide.BeginShowKeyboardInput in Windows Phone 7, or the ancient InputBox command in VB? I'm using Windows.UI.Popups.MessageDialog for displaying simple dialog messages, but can't find any similar thing for requesting text from the user.
Failing that, is there a way I can easily use a little piece of XAML to present a textbox for the user to use?
If neither of these are possible, I guess I'll have to wire this all up myself... I then would plan to intercept keystrokes and display the required text on screen myself. As I don't have a physical tablet (just the simulator) I'm struggling to start with this. How can I:
Detect whether the device has a physical keyboard, so I know whether or not to display the on screen keyboard?
If there is no physical keyboard, how can I show and hide the on screen keyboard?
Some of these sound like they should be easy to answer, but I've yet to track down answers to any of them.
Many thanks!
Adam.
Hey there is such a way to do this in monogame. There is a new template that allows you to create a XAML + Game game which allows you to use the game class you a used to with the xaml bits as well. These links should get you started. The monogame team rocks.
There are the three game types listed there. You want XAML + Game there is a template for it now if you get the proper version of monogame.

let me know if you need more help
This is not a cross platform solution but you could use a FlyOut and place the controls for data entry on the window. FlyOut guidelines are here and UI Controls for text input guidelines are here. I have also used MessageDialog in a MonoGame for asking the user simple questions (up to 3 options) or to get a Yes|No response. You can get details of that class here.
Forgive me if this is a silly question but I am a novice programmer, and I'm hoping there is a novice solution to this.
Is there any programming language that will quickly allow me to write a simple program to show a notification on Windows 7 when CAPS LOCK is pressed?
My laptop doesn't have an indicator light and I have no program on my computer to do so, although I'd be open to suggestions. The only partial solution I've found is through accessibility settings in Windows which plays a god-awful beep every time the key is pressed.
Thanks!
Try Auto Hotkey. It is a great program just for that. It runs scripts in the background that can directly manipulate your keyboards input.
I changed capslock to require ctrl+capslock to work otherwise pressing capslock by itself does nothing :)
You can also do a bunch of other things. You are able to set a custom tone for when you push capslock (however a simple popup or key remapping would probably be best).
Here's an example from the site:
"Capslock::Ctrl Makes Capslock become a Control key. To retain the ability to turn Capslock on and off, also add the remapping +Capslock::Capslock (this toggles Capslock on and off when you hold down the shift key and press Capslock)."
After reading Jeff's review of Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. I decided to get one. It comes with this really nice Instant Viewer feature that it assigns to the middle button of your mouse. Not wanting to lose my middle button "open in new tab" function. I wanted to assign it to the keyboard. I'v looked at task manager when using it and it seems to be part of the ipoint.exe.
Does anyone know if its possible to assign it to the keyboard and how?
Did you try to do it using Microsoft's keyboard software (IntelliType Pro) and mouse software (IntelliPoint)?
I just installed Intellitype Pro 7.1 on XP (I didn't install Intellipoint) and it does let you assign Instant Viewer to a key. You might need a Microsoft keyboard to use it though (you need an M$ mouse for Intellipoint).
