I have a couple of MVC projects which use SQL CE 4.0 and Entity Framework. Since moving to Visual Studio 2012 I keep getting the following error (not every time, but frequently)
LoaderLock was detected
Attempting managed execution inside OS Loader lock. Do not attempt to run managed code inside a DllMain or image initialization function since doing so can cause the application to hang.
The error does not occur if I go back to using VS 2010, which makes me fairly certain it is an issue with Visual Studio rather than my code, but I would like someone to confirm that for me!
Edit
The problem always seems to occur when the Dispose() method of the dbcontext is called. Here is a screenshot of the Exception Assistant:
I switch this off. As it is warning that the application could hang, if your program doesn't hang, then you're probably fine.
The problem can be solved in the same way though, by switching off the
MDA:
Debug -> Exceptions -> Managed Debug Assistants
and unchecking the LoaderLock item.
I also had a problem with LoaderLock when I was working with some external dll in my C# application.
for the .NET 3.5 I just uncheck Thrown option in Exceptions menu (Loader lock error)
for the .NET 4.0 I added <startup useLegacyV2RuntimeActivationPolicy="true"> in app.config

Update: this bug has been fixed for a while now
I installed Visual Studio 2017.3 yesterday and was trying to used the new Development time IIS Support feature. I think I encountered a bug, and I was wondering if anyone knows a workaround this bug. When I used it with a new project it works fine most of the time. By most of the time, is that I think it is broken sometimes depending on the where the project is located/state of cached data, etc.
Sometimes I get an error "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: name". That's the entire error. No log files, no extra information.
I tried to enable the feature for an existing project I am working
on, it got that error.
I tried adding a new web project in a new solution it worked fine. I tried adding a new web project in the same solution as my project, it didn't work.
I deleted all temp files, all bin obj and .vs folders and .user files in the
solution. Same problem.
I deleted temp folder, visual studio user profile data, and restarted the PC same problem.
I tried again in the same solution with the project not having '.' in the name, it worked.
I did some modification to the project that was working and tried to launch again I got same error.
I reverted all changes so that the project was back to the "empty project" state, still same error.
I removed the project. Exited visual studio, deleted all temp/.vs/.use/bin/obj files. Then restarted and added the project again, it worked.
I restarted VS and tried to relaunch it didn't work.
The aspnet core version seems to be not related to the bug. I had the problem with projects targeting 1.1 and 2.0 and also had the feature working for both versions.
So obviously this is a bug in VS2017.3. Since even if I am doing something wrong I should at least get an error explaining what I do wrong not an ArgumentNullException message. I already made a bug report. I am wondering if someone knows a workaround thing bug.
Thanks a lot in advance.
Update: This bug has been fixed for a while now.
After some investigation and with help from a helpful member of Microsoft's Visual Studio Team, I found that Visual Studio was failing at the point where it grants folder read access to the IIS App Pool account. The method that gets the App Pool account name was returning null, and when that null value was passed to the System.Security.Principal.NTAccount class constructor, the ArgumentNullException is thrown.
A workaround that fixed the problem for me, was changing the App Pool to any other App Pool, trying to launch, then changing it back to the original/desired App Pool.
First You Must Update Visual studio with visual studio Installer and Launch the Visual Studio installer.
And Select the Development time IIS support component and Modify.
Wait For Download is Processing
The component is listed as optional in the Summary panel for the ASP.NET and web development workload.
Then you Create New Project Again
Problem Solved.
It has been a while since I've published my app to Azure. During that time frame, I've upgraded my system from 32-bit to 64-bit meaning a fresh install of Windows and Visual Studio. And Visual Studio Update 3 came out and was applied. When I went to publish an update today, I received the following:
The following exception was thrown trying to publish: Root element is missing.
My web.config file looks fine so I don't think it's this issue.
The app works fine in debug mode so I don't think it's any of the .lsml files as is mentioned here.
And I tried this procedure to hand edit the .ls3proj file but it didn't seem to help.
I previously had an issue trying to publish when I upgraded from the standalone LightSwitch 2011 to Visual Studio 2012. I was able to overcome that issue using the method described in this thread.
Attempting to use this same method resulted in my new project has a full screen error saying "There are critical errors in the application definition metadata..." and 210 individual errors (max errors reached).
The first error, "Cannot create unknown type '{http://schemas.microsoft.com/LightSwitch/2010/xaml/model}GlobalAttributeGroup'." Doesn't make sense because that line in the .lsml is identical from the old project to the new project.
The second error, "Could not find any application definition in the project." Which I do not understand at all.
I am able to publish a simple "Hello, world" style app to my Azure account.
What could be causing this? How can I get more information about exactly which element is causing the issue? The log produced by running devenv /log was not helpful.
Matt Thalman was able to solve my problem over in the Microsoft Forums. The ServiceConfiguration.cscfg and ServiceDefinition.csdef were missing from the project when checked out of version control. Copying those over from a new project restored my ability to publish.
Everything had beed working great, but suddenly something happened and every time I try to open any web-based project (either MVC or just 'Open Web Site', any others are just fine), Visual Studio 2012 crashes with Windows environment message:
MyProject - Microsoft Visual Studio (Administrator): devenv.exe - System error
Exception Processing Message 0xc0000005 Parameters 0x000007FEFD4A718C 0x000007FEFD4A718C 0x000007FEFD4A718C 0x000007FEFD4A718C
ОК
I did not notice exact moment when it stopped working. And obviously I have different extensions etc. But I believe, I did not install any big soft these days.
I've installed Windows 8 though, but separatly - on separate volume to try it. Theoretically, it might affect my situation, but I don't know how is that possible - at least I don't know any explanations.
I've tried to refresh Visual Studio 2012 installation, even removed and installed it again.
However, at the same time, I have Visual Studio 2010 previously installed, and it opens web-based projects without any problems.
Mentioned error message above is, as I understand, some generic error message - googling did not help on its recognizing, so don't know what to do - don't really want to reinstall Windows because of that.
Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!
I really don't know what was the cause of the problem, but after all other tries I've applied all pending updates of Windows Update service and everything works well after that.
I've just installed the Visual Studio 2012 RTM on a Windows 7 x64 desktop.
Unfortunately, I'm very underwelmed by the performance of the out-of-the-box installation. Everytime I try to rename a file in the solution explorer, change to a MVC cshtml editor, open a designer view, or intellisense pops up when I start typing with the c# editor, the whole visual studio applications hangs for 5-10 seconds.
There are no customizations, plugins, extensions enabled here that do not get applied with the standard installation.
Has anyone else experienced this? Has anyone else found a way to log the application faults which occur, or detect the hang. I need some way to determine what is going wrong, in order to identify what needs to be altered to rectify the installation.
The problem is you are consuming the lot more resources of the system which is causing hung state of VS. Please close any of other application who is using more RAM. You can take the help of Task Manager to close those application. Please keep in mind if you are running SQL standalone database instance services then its also causes the hand issue. The best is keep you system free from running unuseful application or Go for System upgrade. :-)
I have an .exe that crashes in release mode. I want to debug where the crash occurs.
How can I use VC++ to debug a crash in a release-mode .exe?
You can run Visual Studio and attach it to a process to debug.
Also check through the Windows Event Viewer (an often overlooked source of information) for any exceptions that Windows may have caught.
Firstly if you have access to the code you can open the workspace in visual studion and debug it by pressing F5 button.
Secondly go through the steps that leads to the crash. At that point of time check the location pointed to by the call stack.
This will give you indication on the funciton or line where crash is occuring.
We are assuming this application was written in VC++. How often are you able to reproduce this issue. Is it like everytime you can reproduce it or how is it.
