Reusable edit form in Apache Wicket - components

I have a simple ContactEditPanel which contains a form and a number of textfields. Up until now I included an AjaxSubmitLink in this panel which, if the form content is valid, saves/updates the Contact instance contained in the Panel model. So far so simple. However now I'd like to remove the link in order that I may, depending on the context in which I use the ContactEditPanel, place the submit link at different levels of my overall component hierarchy. For instance in one context I'd like to use to flip between ContactEditPanel and ContactViewPanel with a bar of actions above the current view (edit | save , cancel). Another context would be to use ContactEditPanel in a standalone way (maybe part of a multi-step process) with just a save link below.
I was contemplating refactoring my ContactEditPanel to extends FormComponentPanel rather than Panel as described here but I'm not sure whether this is the right approach and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around this.
Any help would be most appreciated!
Many Thanks,
A

Your using the panel like a FormComponent so extend FormComponentPanel, it will allow you to keep all the validation you write contained to the component and also allow you to reuse it as you wish.
Just think of it as you've created a new FormComponent, like a TextField or DropDownChoice.

How to modify Hybris Backoffice refocus functionality

I'm trying to modify the backoffice refocusing functionality. Not sure exactly where the behavior is taking place but I believe the class is the FocusUtils.java (com.hybris.cockpitng.editor.util) This util class is used in the DefaultEditorAreaValidationHandler.onEvent().
The action takes place in the summary-view of a product in the "Data Quality" section. Here the user can see what fields are missing or are needing to be filled. They can click on the attribute listed and the editor will refocus on the selected field. Currently the refocusing is working with the OOTB implementation BUT it cuts off the label to the fields at times. I would like to slightly modify this util class (override) and use the custom implementation instead.
Field label is cut off
What should be dispalyed instead:
Field label is displayed correctly
The only way to do this from what I can see is by modifying/replacing the widget implementation that is using this logic. Basededitorarea widget (com\hybris\cockpitng\widgets\baseeditorarea) and specifically having to override bean definition of the below bean and additional classes as well.
<alias name="defaultEditorAreaValidationPopupDelegate" alias="editorAreaValidationPopupDelegate" />
This is the only bean I see that is defined in the backoffice-widgets-spring.xml that eventually touches this focus logic. This is like the starting point. Ideally, it would be nice to just make changes to the actual util class or replace it with a custom one rather than having to duplicate many other classes.
Does anyone know if this is the correct approach to doing this? or if anyone has any alternative suggestions that would be great.

Proper Kentico object for non-user-editable block of static html/javascript

The Situation: I've got a mid-sized chunk of html/javascript that contains an authentication script/input (it's a text input, radio control, and a combo box and a few buttons). What it is is less important than the concept that it's a mass of static client side code that the marketing department can pretty easily accidentally the whole thing.
The Desire: I want the users to be able to add it as a whole to a page, but not be able to modify it. When something needs to change, I want to change it in one place and have it be changed on all the pages.
What I've Tried: Widget with a default text. It works, but feels wrong. Users can edit it, and if they do when I fix it one place it doesn't propagate to all the instances. I'm a bit of a Kentico noob, but it seems like there should be a better way to do this.
Also note: I'm using portal engine if that makes a difference.
A widget is the proper usage. What you make your widget inherit from is the key in this case. I'd suggest creating a new widget based on a static HTML webpart. This way you can set the static HTML markup and hide the property from the content editor on the front end. You can do this by going to the Properties tab of the widget and setting the visibility of the field on the form. Don't delete the field, just hide it. It should be a checkbox that says hide on public form or editing form.
** Edit **
As I read through my answer and comments, I realized I meant to say clone the static HTML webpart and set its default text to your javascript. Then create a widget based on that cloned webpart. The text will reside in the web part and will allow you to update it in one place later, if needed.
I will not do it this way because you will be not able to make changes in the future. You can better create a new webpart this can be an empty webpart and then create a custom layout. In this layout you can put you're code. In this way you can always change you're code in the future and then it will be changed on all the places where the widget is placed.
I'd use a new widget based on the Static HTML webpart (make the field read only or hide it as Brenden mentioned), but store the data in a new custom setting.
no coding needed (only a macro to read the custom setting)
able to edit the script on the fly on any instance in the settings module. If you have multiple of these settings you won't need to go through all kinds of widgets to adjust their default setting but find them on a central place.
Cheers!
David
In this case I think it makes sense to create a custom web part to store all your code in it and use it that way. If you want to achieve it without creating a custom web part, you have to store the code in some non-web part and not widget specific object. I like the suggestion of creating a custom setting. You can then access this custom setting via a macro. This macro can be used as a default property of a newly created web part (inherited e.g. from the static text web part, you'd use the text property). You may as well create a widget out of it. Another approach is to use Kentico localization keys as a workaround. you can create a key in the Localization application and access it again, via a macro, e.g. {?customkey.myhtml?}. The approach with a custom setting however sounds cleaner to me.
This syntax should be working to access a custom setting value via macro:
{%Settings.CustomSettings.xxx%}
{%Settings.CustomSettings["xxx"]%}
{%Settings.CustomSettings.GetValue("xxx")%}

Advice in edit form design for JSF

I have a complex Bean object that I want to update. Because it is too much complex, it can't be edited in the DataTable (inplace editing). Let's say that my page have this structure:
-> Input Form
-> DataTable for Listing
So I save the object using the Input Form and it appears inside the DataTable. This part is easy. Now, I need to edit the object inside the DataTable. Since the object is too much complex, it is not viable to edit in-place. So I must pick the row data and put it in a form to be able to sumbit it.
My problem is, I haven't come to a way of editing the data that I would like.
I've done it in multiple ways.
I've created a page only for the edit. I call the page passing the object's ID in the URL.
I copied the Input Form inside a Dialog. While this is great for editing, using a dialog had led me into problems (complex validations patterns, dialogs inside dialogs, etc).
I put the row data back into the Input Form and use Primefaces-Extensions spotlight component to ensure that the user will only work within the form. I've added a button to cancel edition also.
I didn't like any of them, although the third is the best of them, to me. But I'm also out of ideas of how to design data editing. Do you guys have some edit designs that you would like to share?
Thanks in advance.

reuse and extend PresenterWidget GWTP?

i am new to GWT and GWTP and the question sounds stupid.. Can I make an abstract PresenterWidget or similiar?
Like in normal Java extending the "class" and reuse / extend the logic. But not only the class, the whole thing of View and Presenter. I try to explain my initial situation and maybe you have another idea.
The image hopefully helps to explain it. The "Main-Tab" and every other tab consists of a collection of views which have the same base structure and the same logic.
the base structure consists of
border around EVERYTHING
an image (the wwitch)
a title
a textarea
a PresenterWidget which is added to a contentSlot of the parent (the menu left)
and below the base are view specific components like buttons, text or any other widget. So a main part of the view with logic is repeading. If the switch is "toggled" the view is hidden (the textarea and any childs / view specific components) like the lowest view in the picture. Furthermore the PresenterWidget left changes the color.
The logic is working, but now I am searching a proper way to solve this without repeading code and the possibility to add child elements which are hidden as well by toggling the switch. Can I add to a PresenterWidget child widgets and define where there should be added? like: Even if this is possible, it feels a bit inconvenient.
Thanks in advance.
I just want to post the solution:
I have now a simple Composite (KPICommonView) for the switch, title and the description. It got another FlowPanel below the description, where the specific components will be added later. For this the Composite implements "HasWidgets" and overrides the "add(Widget w)"-method which is called by UiBinder if the Widget is added and has child elements.
<own:KPICommonView title="First Header" description="I am a happy description :)" anchorToken="{nameAnchors.getFirst}">
<g:Label>child component</g:Label>
</own:KPICommonView>
I am not sure if I do a PresenterWidget for every segment and every PresenterWidget has one of the KPICommonView added, or if I do one normal Presenter which adds more than one of the CommonViews.
The CommonView furhter creates the PresenterWidget for the menu item on the side. It gets the attributes from the constructor (anchorToken, title) and adds it to the slot (which happens ugly, because the View has hard coded the parent saved to call "addInSlot()". The repeading code for the switch is handled by the KPICommonView.

Coded ui objects in UIMap

I have a question regarding coded ui UIMap.
Every time I record an action on the same application, coded ui generates a new object for the same window in the application.
It looks like:
UIAdminWindow
UIAdminWindow1
UIAdminWindow2
and so on...
every window class holds different buttons, even though it's the same window.
Thus it's very hard to keep code maintenance.
What i would like is that every time i perform actions and records on a window, even if not at the same time, the already generated class for this window, will be updated with the new controls.
any suggestions to why it happens?
Thanks a lot!
You can clean up your UIMaps by doing two things:
Use the UIMap Toolbox (from codeplex) to move controls within the UIMap so they are all under one control tree.
When you have duplicate UI controls, go to the properties for the action that references the duplicate control and change the UI Control property to point to the original control in the UIMap.
The duplicate trees should now be unreferenced and you can delete it from your map, keeping things clean.
And yes, it's a pain to do, but it's worth it for maintainability.
In UIMap.uitest you can change the action name and the control name for better maintenance.
For example: you can set UIAdminWindow as FirstAcessWindow or other name that will express comfortably the control or the action.
What I can guess is that there is some randomly generated content or element identification data such as class or title that may be causing it. This may be caused by different username for example. Also you can update the element from UI map element tree.
