After searching on Google, I've managed to put together a powershell script based on this site to upload my azure project. When I try to add it to TFS build process using the steps on the same site I get the following output:
My build says it's been running for 7 hours and if I login to windows azure there is no mention of the package. I have run it numerous other times since but not for as long, even after 10 minutes it still hasn't changed anything on the Azure dashboard.
If I run the same command from a command prompt on the build server then it runs and uploads the staging environment and it takes about 8-10 minutes to complete. Is there anything special I have to do to get it to run from TFS Build, or is there a way that I can get more meaningful output?
Finally found it. The default.publishsettings didn't have permission for the build service to read it. Added full permissions for the service and it now works.

I have a Django-based web app deployed from Github, running in Python 3.9. The app deploys and starts successfully.
I need to add post-build actions to complete the deployment; the exceeding common Django task of running "manage.py". Following the general and python-specific docs I have added the an app setting of
POST_BUILD_SCRIPT_PATH=postbuild.sh
There is a shell script, postbuild.sh in the root of my app, which runs fine if I SSH into the running container. The expected behaviour is that after deployment, this should run, and output to the deployment log. Neither of these things happen.
I have tested the app setting POST_BUILD_COMMAND with a very simple echo, and that does nothing either.
Can you tell me either what I need to do to make these app settings work, or suggest an alternative method of running the post-build script?
Please note that this is a Linux app using Oryx, so answers concerning Windows/Kudu like this one aren't related.
I noticed you asked your question over here as well. Your setting needs to be set to a relative path, /postbuild.sh.
I have a web project that I want to publish after a successful build.
In the Edit Build Definition Window i enter the following in the MSBuild Arguments textbox:
/p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:PublishProfile=PushtoDrott
This profile is working very well locally, and even on our TFS server machine when run in the command line. On the server i use an account with local admin priviliges.
What does not work however is the task. The following error is presented:
C:\Programfiles(x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\Web\Deploy\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.Deploy.FileSystem.targets
(93): Unable to create directory
"\\remote_server_name\disk$\directory". Access to the path
'\\remote_server_name\disk$\directory' is denied.
This is most likely a security problem, but how do i go around and solve it?
Wich user is the task run by?
Is MSBuild handing over this task to some other process?
When you ran the task on the TFS server machine, what user did you login as?
When Tfs build runs on a server the process will be run under the user which is configured to run tfs build agent service. So find that user and provide it access to the mentioned path and it will work.
We found out that the profile could publish the site when the site was stopped. It was most likely a case of IIS locking some file when there are users on the site.
I am getting the following error:
Error: The process cannot access the file 'C:\DWASFiles\Sites\mywebsitename\VirtualDirectory0\site\wwwroot\newrelic\NewRelic.Agent.Core.dll' because it is being used by another process.
In the Running deployment command... log file when attempting to deploy an Azure website from Github.
Would appreciate any pointers as to what could be causing this.
UPDATE: Turns out this is also failing when publishing directly from VS.NET with the following:
1>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets(4196,5): Warning : An error was encountered when processing operation 'Create File' on 'NewRelic.Agent.Core.dll'.
1>Retrying operation 'Update' on object filePath (mywebsitename\newrelic\NewRelic.Agent.Core.dll). Attempt 1 of 2.
1>C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets(4196,5): Error : Web deployment task failed. ((06/07/2013 23:54:58) An error occurred when the request was processed on the remote computer.)
This was working before and I am not sure why it would have stopped.
NewRelic recommend stopping the website to unload the file and allow the deployment to go through.
As an alternative, you can set COR_ENABLE_PROFILING to 0 in your app settings on the configure tab to temporarily disable the profiling, which should then allow you to continue with the deployment while leaving the website operational throughout.
Instead of stopping the website you can temporarily turn off New Relic monitoring via the Configure tab on manage.windowsazure.com:
Configure > developer analytics > select "OFF" > Save
Deploy
Configure > developer analytics > select "ADD-ON" > Choose Add-on from dropdown > Save
Worked for me, both with a regular deployment from VS and an automatic build from VSO.
This is a known issue with the New Relic .NET agent for Azure Websites when performing an upgrade of the agent. The workaround is to stop the website to release the dll, finish the deployment and then restart the instance.
https://newrelic.com/docs/dotnet/azure-web-sites#h2-1
Not really a solution but more of a work-around, in the publish dialog view a preview of the changes and uncheck the NewRelic.Agent.Core.dll file so that it doesn't get published.
None of these answers work for me anymore. I have an Azure Basic tier website plan, which hosts multiple actual websites.
If I don't stop the website, I get the error mentioned above (newrelic.agent.core.dll is in use)...
If I do stop the website (or all of them), I get an error saying that the publishing endpoint isn't available.
If I go to the configure tab and disable the AddOn, we still get the error mentioned above (newrelic.agent.core.dll is in use)...
Pretty much we just republish over and over again with different permutations of the above until if works. It took me hours the other day, took me 10 minutes today.
If you are using webdeploy, then you can configure your webdeploy settings so that it ignores the file. However, if you do that, you will manually have to deploy any updates to the new relic agent.
I had a similar issue with the new relic log file being locked, and solved it by:
Moving the new relic log file to a subdirectory of the web root (e.g. \newreliclogs)
Adding 2 lines to my powershell script that configured the skip directive to ignore that whole directory. e.g. (where destBaseOptions is of type Microsoft.Web.Deployment.DeploymentBaseOptions
$skipDirective = new-object Microsoft.Web.Deployment.DeploymentSkipDirective("NewRelicLog","objectName=dirPath,absolutePath=.*\newreliclogs$")
$destBaseOptions.SkipDirectives.Add($skipDirective)
Depending on how you are using webdeploy, the configuration is achieved slightly differently, I used the following links to help me piece it together:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd569089(WS.10).aspx
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.web.deployment.deploymentskipdirective(v=vs.90).aspx

And I used the powershell script from the Octopus Deploy Library at https://library.octopusdeploy.com/#!/step-template/actiontemplate-web-deploy-publish-website-(msdeploy).
I'm using Visual Studio 2012 and the publishing feature. I have created a publishing profile that deploys my application to a development server, and it works great when executed from vs2012 on my machine. Here is my problem; on the development server I also have TeamCity installed and I would like to trigger the publishing after a build have completed. So I created a simple build step that looks like this:
Build file path: .\src\Solution.sln
Targets: Rebuild
Command line parameters: /p:DeployOnBuild=true;PublishProfile=Ci
When this step is executing I get the following error:
C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets(4377, 5): error ERROR_USER_NOT_ADMIN: Web deployment task failed.
(Connected to 'dev.domain.com' using the Web Deployment Agent Service, but could not authorize. Make sure you are an administrator on 'dev.domain.com'.
The Ci profile contains a username and password that works when I run the publishing from Visual Studio on my machine. I have also tried passing in username and password as parameters in the build step, but I get the same result. Do I need to run the TeamCity services under admin accounts to get this working? All suggestions are appreciated.
I have just blogged about this at http://sedodream.com/2013/01/06/CommandLineWebProjectPublishing.aspx.
You are pretty close, hopefully I can close the gap.
You are correct that username and password are specified in the VS publish dialog, but we do not save the password in the .pubxml file. It is currently being saved in the .pubxml.user file, and that file is not used at all for command line scenarios. Because of that you will need to pass in the property. So in your case it should be
msbuild .\src\solution.sln /p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:PublishProfile=ci /p:Password=<insert-password>
If your web server does not have trusted certs you may need to also pass in /p:AllowUntrustedCertificate=true.
One little addition which may not be directly related to your issue, but may be helpful for others which may see this later.
If you are building the .csproj/.vbproj file (and potentially in some scenarios where the .sln file is used) you should pass in the property /p:VisualStudioVersion=11.0. More info on this available at my blog http://sedodream.com/2012/08/19/VisualStudioProjectCompatabilityAndVisualStudioVersion.aspx
I've got a TFS build set up to build and deploy a web application. I'm passing in the MSDeploy parameters via the TFS build definition's MSBuild arguments. First time round this is working fine. When someone accesses the web app, one of the controls (Microsoft charting control) generates a couple of files in an empty directory I've added to the solution.
When I go to rebuild (or continuous integration is triggered) the next build will usually fail because it can't delete one of the generated files. When I try and manually delete the file it tells me that IIS worker process is using it and it can't be deleted.
Now to get the build building I'd have to manually restart IIS every time, which is not desirable with CI in mind. I've taken a look through Microsoft.Web.Publishing.Tasks.dll and there's nothing there to restart IIS using MSDeploy.
At the moment I'm thinking that adding stubs of the temporary files in the solution might be a resolution (maybe MSDeploy will be able to close the process if the file is a permanent part of the deployment) or I could do some unpleasantness with Exec in the solution file to get an IIS reset.
It's probably a long shot but has anyone come up against this and found a nice solution?
You could use MSBuild Extension Pack to stop the application pool automatically before deployment. There are several tasks in the MSBuild.ExtensionPack.Web namespace to manage IIS, such as stopping and starting an application pool, deleting an application, etc.
