Edit a file with single quotes in the filename in Vim - vim

I've run into an odd problem in Vim. I would like to drag and drop a file from my desktop or file manager into Vim and edit it. Gvim handles this behavior correctly.
When I attempt to do the same thing in console Vim, the path to the file name is inserted instead. For example, if I drag and drop the file /home/myuser/foo.matic, it will apply the text string '/home/myuser/foo.matic' to the current buffer.
If I type :edit, then drag and drop the file name, Vim treats '/home/myuser/foo.matic' as a new directory.
I believe the problem here is the quotes before and after the file path. These appear to be inserted by both gnome-terminal and terminator. Is there a way to strip these quotes from the file name when dragging and dropping? Alternatively, is there a way for Vim to ignore the quotes?

You can’t make vim own :e command to do what you need, but you can define your own one. Most straightforward solution - make shell parse what was intended to be parsed by the shell - is listed below:
command -nargs=? -bang -bar E :execute "e<bang> ".fnameescape(system("echo -n ".<q-args>))
. This command accepts only :e[!] {file} variant, no +cmd and ++opts are allowed.

How to make Vim ignore file extensions when opening files through the command line/shell?

Consider the following directory tree:
root/include/file.hpp
root/source/file.cpp
root/images/file.png
The command line is inside the directory root.
In the vimrc file, there is set wildignore=*.png.
If you open Vim in the folder root and run :next */file.*, it opens only file.hpp and file.cpp.
However, if you launch Vim from command line with vim */file.*, it opens all three files.
So, when feeding it a filename, it first loads the files, then vimrc? Is there a way to ignore extensions when opening files with Vim through the command line? Or to make Vim load vimrc first?
In the first scenario, the glob expansion is done by Vim and thus obeys the rules in your vimrc.
In the second scenario, the glob expansion is done by your shell and there's no reason to expect it to obey the rules in your vimrc.
You can do something like $ vim -c "next */file.*", which essentially opens Vim without a filename and executes next */file.*.
Or you can exclude the pattern directly in your shell. Assuming you have extglob set, this can be done in bash with $ vim !(file.png).
When doing :next */file.* from within Vim, vim expands the wildcard and filters by wildignore. When doing vim */file.* from your shell, the shell expands the wildcard, and passes all three files to Vim.
Depending on your shell, this will probably work instead:
vim +"args */file.*"

How can I execute the current line as Vim EX commands?

Say I'm editing my _vimrc file and I've just added a couple of lines, for instance a new key mapping. I don't want to reload the whole file (:so %) since that will reset a lot of temporary stuff I'm experimenting with. I just want to run the two lines that I'm currently working on.
I'm having no luck trying to copy/paste the lines into the command buffer, since I can't use the put command in there. Is there any way I could run the current line (or current selection) as EX commands?
Summary:
After Anton Kovalenko's answer and Peter Rincker's comment I ended up with these key maps, which either executes the current line, or the current selected lines if in visual mode:

To execute the current line as an ex command, you may also use:
yy:#"
This will yank the current line to the "-register and execute it. I don't think it is too much typing.
Executing the line under cursor as an Ex command:
:execute getline(".")
Convenient enough for 2 lines. (I'd figure out something for doing it with regions, but I'm not a vim user). And for currently selected region, the following seems to do the job:
:execute getreg("*")
As commented by Peter Rincker, this mapping can be used for executing the currently selected lines:

For that purpose, I have defined the following commands and mappings:

Just after posting this, I found a work-around. I can copy text into the clipboard using "*y, then put that text into the command buffer by using the middle mouse button. This works for me, but is hardly a convenient solution for people without clipboard support, mouse support or just an aversion to removing their hands from the Vim position.
The accepted answer doesn't handle continuation sections. Also, surprisingly, the bar isn't needed, newlines are fine. This will work, first yanking the text into register x:
vno <c-x> "xy:exe substitute(#x,"\n\\",'','g')<cr>
As someone has already mentioned, the only exception are commands that "eat up" newlines. Eg, executing the above mapping on:
:sign define piet text=>> texthl=Search
:exe ":sign place 2 line=23 name=piet file=" . expand("%:p")
will cause vim to to think that the user is trying to define textl as "Search\n:exe ":sign place... etc.
You could also try
:<C-R><C-L><CR>
Per the vim docs, the combination will plop the current line into the command line. From there, hitting enter should do the trick. I realize that this does not handle multiline cases, however it doesn't require a .vimrc and therefore works out of the box.
If you're doing a lot of experimenting (trying things out that you might want to add to your vimrc, I assume?) it might help to do so in a scratch file like experimental.vim so you aren't just relying on your history to know what you're trying out. Now that you have these great mappings, it will be easy to rerun things from experimental or vimrc without sourcing the whole file.
Also (sorry, I can't comment on answers yet, it seems), I tried this mapping of Peter's:

This works in most cases, but it fails specifically on function definitions.

This mapping joins the lines into a single string, separated by <BAR> and then execs them.
I'm not entirely sure why, but if I try to do that with a function definition in normal mode:
:exec 'function! TestMe()| echo "Yay!"|endfunction'
-> E488: Trailing characters
After some testing, I've found that it will work with newline separators instead:
:exec "function! TestMe()\n echo 'Yay!'\nendfunction"
:call TestMe()
-> Yay!
So, I've changed my mapping to this:
vnoremap <Leader>es :<c-u>exec join(getline("'<","'>"),"\n")<CR>
I suppose there is a vim or ex reason why the <BAR> method doesn't work on functions (maybe even some setting I have on?), and I'm curious to hear what it is if someone knows.

If you want to execute a command because you want to refine it before committing it to _.vimrc, then you should launch a Command Line Window for Ex-mode commands with q:.
At launch the Command Line Window is buffered with the contents of the command line history. It is a normal Vim window the contents of which can be edited as any text buffer with the exception of pressing on any line which executes the command on that line. It is very useful when you want to slightly change a long, complex command you wrote earlier and re-run it.
To launch a 'Command Line Window' for search strings press q/.
!! (shorthand for :.!) executes the current line as input to a command, per POSIX ex & vi. You may need to append sh if it is a system command.
Executing !! on a blank line (and omitting sh) is a shortcut for reading a shell command straight into the buffer. By it's nature :.! overwrites the current line while :.r! inserts on the line below.
ls -A | head -n +4
~
~
!sh
Results:
.sh_history
.sh_logout
.kshrc
corelist.txt
~
~
4 lines added; 1 line deleted`
This means there is no need to redirect pipelines to a file and then examine the data to see if the contents are valid. Just execute commands in vi directly and undo if you make a mistake.
Alternately, yanking a line as a named buffer allows you to execute it as an ex command, almost like a macro. You can still edit and undo the line to get it correct instead of trying to edit the : line in command mode.
The functions recommended here are all POSIX and have been supported for over 40 years, so no special vim or other enhanced features are required.
:%s/meep/pEEp/ | g/foo/ s//BAR

Yank the ex command (line 1, :%s...) into a named buffer / macro.
I just use the label m for "macro".

But remember that "multiple undo" is not POSIX. undo is only a toggle between undo and redo in a "historically accurate & compliant" ex / vi implementation.
The work-around is to save to a temporary (or valid) file name before executing a questionable edit:
:w $$.tmp
Then just :e! to "reset and reload" if needed.
You can also use :pre (preserve) to make a special temporary backup file prior to making multiple changes.
Then use :reco! % (recover this!) to restore back to that point.
Realize that :preserve creates a snapshot-like file which is deleted as soon as it is rolled back to. It does not matter if you save the edit(s) or not.
Therefore writing your own file (:w ...) and restoring with :e! may still have value because the system will not automatically delete it.
:pre is perfect when you should have ran sudo vi ... or otherwise do not have the necessary permissions - but you only realized the mistake after making several changes. i.e. vi /etc/sudoers instead of sudo vi /etc/sudoers.
^^ NEVER DO THIS! ONLY AN EXAMPLE! USE sudo visudo INSTEAD!
You can get a list of existing recovery files with vi -r and recover one directly with vi -r filename as needed, optionally with something like sudo vi -r filename.
The distinction here is that even though the ":preserved file" has it's own "special" name and path internally, it will :write to the original, intended location when ":recovered ==> /etc/sudoers
Just be sure to use :wq! and not something like ZZ when done with your "recovery" or you will still lose the edits which you tried to save.
By the way, ^R is expected to redraw or repaint the display per POSIX; it is not "undo" in any compliant vi implementation.

Vim and ctags: tag filenames

Is it possible to have ctags generate tags for filenames as well? I would like to be able to jump to a file given a filename. :find seems to be awfully slow compare to tags...
Try running ctags -R --extra=f .
The --extra=f option tells ctags to:
"Include an entry for the base file name of every source file (e.g. "example.c"), which addresses the first line of the file."
When you open vim, you can the use :tag <filename> to jump to the first line of the file.
You can open the filename under the cursor with gf

or, if you've setup cscope in vim as recommended in :help cscope, put the cursor on top of a filename, and press <C-_>f.

How to edit a file in Vim with all lines ending in ^M except the last line ending in ^M^J

I have a bunch of files that I need to look at. All lines in these files end in ^M (\x0D) except the very last line that ends in ^M^J (\x0D\x0A).
Obviously, Vim determines the filetype to be DOS with the effect that the file's entire content is
displayed on one single line like so:
some text foo^Mmore text and^Ma few control-m^Ms and more and more
Since I don't want to change the files' content: is there a setting in Vim that allows to look at these
files with the new lines as I'd expect them to be?
If you do not mind having a line at the bottom containing a single ^J character, you can set fileformats (note the s at the end) to mac and reload the buffer:
:set fileformats=mac
:edit
Or equivalently you could start the editor as follows:
vim -R "+set fileformats=mac" "+edit" <filename>
The -R (readonly) option is there because you stated you do not want to change the files.
I did not find a way that does not involve reloading the buffer.
Try this:
:set fileformat=unix
Can't really verify it though, since I don't have that kind of files handy.

How to highlight Bash scripts in Vim?

My Vim editor auto highlights PHP files (vim file.php), HTML files (vim file.html) and so on.
But when I type: vim file and inside it write a Bash script, it doesn't highlight it.
How can I tell Vim to highlight it as a Bash script?
I start typing #!/bin/bash at the top of the file, but it doesn't make it work.
Are you correctly giving the shell script a .sh extension? Vim's automatic syntax selection is almost completely based on file name (extension) detection. If a file doesn't have a syntax set (or is the wrong syntax), Vim won't automatically change to the correct syntax just because you started typing a script in a given language.
As a temporary workaround, the command :set syn=sh will turn on shell-script syntax highlighting.
The answers so far are correct that you can use the extension (like .sh) or a shebang line (like #!/bin/bash) to identify the file type. If you don't have one of those, you can still specify the file type manually by using a modeline comment at the top or bottom of your file.
For instance, if you want to identify a script without an extension as a shell script, you could add this comment to the top of your file:
# vim: set filetype=sh :
or
# vim: filetype=sh
That will tell vim to treat the file as a shell script. (You can set other things in the modeline, too. In vim type :help modeline for more info.)
Actually syntax highlighting is a feature of vim not vi.
Try using vim command and then do
:syntax on.
I came to this answer looking for specifically how to highlight bash syntax, not POSIX shell. Simply doing a set ft=sh (or equivalent) will result in the file being highlighted for POSIX shell, which leaves a lot of syntax that's valid in bash highlighted in red. To get bash highlighting:
" Set a variable on the buffer that tells the sh syntax highlighter
" that this is bash:
let b:is_bash = 1
" Set the filetype to sh
set ft=sh
Note that if your ft is already sh, you still need the set command; otherwise the let doesn't take effect immediately.
You can make this a global default by making the variable global, i.e., let g:is_bash = 1.
:help ft-sh-syntax is the manual page I had to find; it explains this, and how to trigger highlighting of other flavors of shell.
Vim can also detect file types by inspecting their contents (like for example if the first line contains a bash shebang), here is a quote from filetype.txt help file:
If your filetype can only be detected by inspecting the contents of the file
Create your user runtime directory. You would normally use the first item of the 'runtimepath' option. Example for Unix:

Write this file as "scripts.vim" in your user runtime directory. For
example, for Unix:
:w ~/.vim/scripts.vim
The detection will work right away, no need to restart Vim.
Your scripts.vim is loaded before the default checks for file types, which
means that your rules override the default rules in
$VIMRUNTIME/scripts.vim.
Vim can detect the file type reading the first line. Add the following line as first line.
#!/bin/sh
For those who have a variant of this question i.e. how to enable syntax highlighting on bash files without .sh extension automatically when opened...
Add filetype on in your .vimrc. This enables file type detection by also considering the file's contents. For example, bash scripts will be set to sh file-type. However, typing the #! won't trigger file type detection on a new file created with vim and you will need to use set ft=sh in that case. For more info, type :h filetype in vim.
As mentioned in the comments, you will need to use this in conjuction with syntax enable to turn on highlighting.
Or you could use :filetype detect.

Use this if you started with an empty file and typed text that makes
it possible to detect the file type. For example, when you entered
this in a shell script: "#!/bin/csh".
Once you add the shebang at the top of the file, save it and reload it (e.g. :w|e) and syntax coloring can kick in.

vim already recognizes many file types by default. Most of them work by file extensions, but in a case like this, vim will also analyze the content of the file to guess the correct type.
vim sets the filetype for specific file names like .bashrc, .tcshrc, etc. automatically. But a file with a .sh extension will be recognized as either csh, ksh or bash script. To determine what kind of script this is exactly, vim reads the first line of the file to look at the #! line.
If the first line contains the word bash, the file is identified as a bash script. Usually you see #!/bin/bash if the script is meant to be executed directly, but for a shell configuration file using a simple # bash would work as well.
If you want to look at the details, this is implemented in $VIMRUNTIME/filetype.vim.
Probably the easiest way to get syntax highlighting on a new file, is to just reload it after writing the shebang line. A simple :w :e will write out the file, reload it, and interprete the shebang line you have just written to provide you with the appropriate syntax highlighting.
If you already know the file-type before opening the script or if you're creating a new script without an extension which is common, you can pass it to vim on the command-line like so:
vim -c 'setfiletype sh' path/to/script
vim -c 'setfiletype python' path/to/script
To toggle syntax highlight on/off while you're inside the editor.
Turn on
:syntax on
Turn off
:syntax off
Run this to always have syntax highlighting on when opening vim.
echo ":syntax on" >> ~/.vimrc
When you create a new file, only the filename detection comes into play; content detection (#!/bin/bash) doesn't apply if you type it after creating a new buffer.
The sensible thing is to just do :set ft=bash the first time around, and the next time you edit it, the #!/bin/bash will set the right filetype automatically.
