htaccess url rewrite with search - .htaccess

i am trying to create an .htaccess file that will achieve the following
create a clean url like this www.mydomain.com/About-Us with page page.php?title=About Us
query a database with the parameters passed on the url like this www.mydomain.com/?search=abc and it pulls to page index.php?search=abc
this is my code so far
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^?search=([0-9]*)$ index.php?id=$1 ## e.g www.mydomain.com/?search=try
RewriteRule ^([A-Z]*)$ page.php?name=$1
## www.mydomain.com/About-Us
##ErrorDocument 404 PageNotavailabale
####Protect the system from machines with worms
RewriteRule (cmd|root)\.exe - [F,E=dontlog:1]
#### To hold and redirect css/images/js files
RewriteRule images/(.+)?$ images/$1 [NC,L]
RewriteRule css/(.+)?$ css/$1 [NC,L]
RewriteRule js/(.+)?$ js/$1 [NC,L]

Why not using this kind of url for your search engine : www.domain.com/search/abc ?
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^search/([a-zA-Z0-9]+)$ index.php?search=$1
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9]+)$ index.php?page=$1
Then, your access your pages with www.domain.com/<myPage>.
And your search engine with www.domain.com/search/<mySearch>
EDIT :
Please notice your rules doesn't allow a lot of params :
^?search=([0-9]*)$ allows only numbers (even an empty parameter)
^([A-Z]*)$ allows only uppercase letters (and also empty parameter)

htaccess rewrite key/value pair params in url

I know this is very common question but I can't seem find any solution regarding in my problem. The folder structure looks like this:
- rootProject
- subfolder
* .htaccess
* index.php
Normal url params: http://website.com/subfolder/?dynamicKey=dynamicValue.
But What I want to achieve is like this: http://website.com/subfolder/dynamicKey/dynamicValue
But I failed to do that, I can only retrieve the dynamicKey.
Here is my current htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/?$ index.php?$1 [NC,QSA,L]
Thanks to #Ar Rakin. Here is the solution.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/?$ index.php?$1 [NC,QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/([a-z]+)/?$ index.php?$1=$2 [NC,QSA,L]
With your shown samples and attempted code, please try following htaccess rules. We need to add conditional checks before rewrite rules else later it will affect your existing pages also.
Make sure to clear your browser cache before testing your URLs.
RewriteEngine On
##Added conditions if non-existing pages requested then only perform rewrite.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/?$ index.php?$1 [NC,QSA,L]
##Added conditions if non-existing pages requested then only perform rewrite.
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/([a-z]+)/?$ index.php?$1=$2 [NC,QSA,L]
NOTE: your used regex [a-z] will only match small letters in uri, in case it needed to check any alphabets(capital OR small) then change FROM [a-z] TO [a-zA-Z] in above rules also.

Optimize Long URLs with .htaccess

I have theses URLs
http://www.website.com/?goto=plaforms
http://www.website.com/?goto=offers&platform=dates
http://www.website.com/?goto=profile&member=1
http://www.website.com/?goto=product&offer=2
I want to change them using .htaccess to be like this:
http://www.website.com/plaforms
http://www.website.com/offers/dates
http://www.website.com/profile/1
http://www.website.com/product/2
I've tried this but not working
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/?$ index.php?goto=$1
Honestly I have no clue how to do it.
UPDATE:
I have an index.php in which I call all pages
index.php
$page = $_GET['goto'];
$url = $page.'.php';
if(file_exists($url)):
include($url);
else:
header('location:'?goto=home');
endif;
The 1st param ?goto= calls for pages and the second param call data from database
You could write rewrite rules like these:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
#The rules
RewriteRule ^([^\/]+)?$ /?goto=$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^offers\/dates$ /?goto=offers&platform=dates [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^profile\/(\d+)$ /?goto=profile&member=$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^product\/(\d+)$ /?goto=product&offer=$1 [R=301,L]
The problem is some of the parameter values can not be derived from your fancy URLs. Therefore, you have to spell them out fully (like /offers/dates) or partially like /profile/x and /product/x). The only really generic rule is the first one that rewrites anything /xxx to goto=xxx. So, depending on y our URL space you may have to write a lot of rules.

How to mod_write query param to path for arbitrarily long path?

I'm building a simple API with apache and I want to map /really/long/path/api/captions.php?caption_id=blah to /really/long/path/api/captions/blah. It's important to NOT have to specify a full path in the rewrite rule because I want this to work no matter where I deploy this code to. However, I can't find/figure out a working example of .htaccess rewrite rules that enable me to match based upon only the final part of the extension.
So, assuming that I have, say, captions.php in a dir called api, what .htaccess file do I need to include in api to accomplish this transform without having /really/long/path/ anywhere therein?
(I also want to be able to map /really/long/path/api/captions.php to /really/long/path/api/captions/ and /really/long/path/api/captions.)
I've tried all sorts of wildcard-like syntax; here's one of those non-working attempts:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*?)/?captions/(.*?)/?$ /captions.php?caption_id=$1 [L]
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /captions\.php\?caption_id=([^\&\ ]+)
RewriteRule ^(.*?)/?captions\.php$ /captions/%1? [L,R=301]
Thanks!
Got there in the end. This is all that was needed:
RewriteEngine On # Turn on the rewriting engine
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^captions/?$ captions.php [NC,L]
RewriteRule ^captions/(.*)/?$ captions.php?caption_id=$1 [NC,L]

Replace items with RewriteRule using .htaccess

I'm trying to use the Url rewrite using "RewriteRule".
I would use this link to show a new article in my blog:
https://www.example.com/article/how-to-visit-italy-in-winter
The original script (including vars) is
https://www.example.com/post.php?idpost=how-to-visit-italy-in-winter
This is my .htaccess
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^article/$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule .$ https://www.example.com/post.php?idpost=$1 [L]
but it doesn't work, the browser redirect to:
https://www.example.com/post.php?idpost=
I'm trying to resolve about 2 days witout success :(
Thank you.
You rule looks fine except for two things . Your $1 back reference is undefined and empty as you are not capturing any URI. To capture parts of the uri you need to use Regex capture-groups (.*) .
2) You need to use an absolute path instead of the full url as your RewriteRule`s destination if you want to silently redirect the url.
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^article/$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule article/(.+) /post.php?idpost=$1 [L]

Rewrite and redirect with php variables

I am simply trying to rewrite automatically this:
From: mysite.com/channel.php?id=BBC&name=British Broadcasting Company &date=today
To: mysite.com/channel-britishbroadcastingcompany-today.html
I've tried with:
RewriteRule ^channel-(.*)-(.*)\.html$ /channel.php?id=1&name=$2&date=$3 [R]
But nothing happens.
Hope this simplest one will help you out. This will redirect if
1. REQUEST_URI is /channel.php
2. QUERY_STRING matches this pattern id=something&name=something&date=something
Redirect this to /channel-%1-%2.html here
1. %1 will hold value of name parameter
2. %2 will hold value of date parameter
RewriteEngine on
Options -MultiViews
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/channel\.php$
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} id=.*?&name=(.*?)&date=(.*)
RewriteRule .* /channel-%1-%2.html? [R=301]
As per the requirement specified by OP to first redirect url on html page on the basis of some query parameters then rewriting the request on previous page. So the complete code of .htaccess will be like this.
RewriteEngine on
Options -MultiViews
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/channel\.php$
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} id=.*?&name=(.*?)&date=(.*)
RewriteRule .* /channel-%1-%2? [R=301]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/channel\-(.*?)\-(.*?)
RewriteRule .* /channel.php? [L]
Explanation of 2nd part which is added.
1. REQUEST_FILENAME if file does not exist as a file and directory.
2. REQUEST_URI If request_uri starts with such pattern channel-somewords-somewords
then rewrite request on /channel.php
If I understand the problem correctly, You currently have a file channel.php and what You want to achieve is get more "friendly" URLs for SEO and general aesthetics in the browser location bar but still have channel.php handle your requests.
If this is really the case then You need a two-way rewrite.
First, You need to take your original URL and redirect it to a new, pretty version.
Second, You need to rewrite this pretty URI internally and still feed it to channel.php behind the scenes.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# This part rewrites channel.php?name=X&date=Y into channel-X-Y.html
RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS} ^$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} =GET
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} (.*\&)?name=([^&]+)\&date=([^&]+)(?:\&(.*))?
RewriteRule ^channel.php$ channel-%2-%3.html?%1%4 [R,L,NE]
# This part rewrites it back into channel.php but keeps the "friendly" URL visible
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^channel-(.*)-(.*).html$ channel.php?name=$1&date=$2 [L,QSA]
Note that the first rule-set limits the rewrite to method GET - otherwise You will lose any submitted POST data.
It also allows for any other query-string parameters to surround name and date (the rest of query-string parameters will pass-through to .html URI and then will be picked back up by channel.php)
Also note the ENV:REDIRECT_STATUS rule - this is crucial, without that part You'll be stuck in redirect loop.
See
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-s
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9-_.]+)/?$ index.php?id=$1 [NC,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9-_.]+)/([a-z0-9]+)/?$ index.php?id=$1&goto=$2 [NC,L]
What it's going to do is check the index.php and replace to some like, site/dir/index.php to site/dir/namehere than in index.php you can use explode() to separate the values of current url ang get the variables
I am assuming you are asking for rewrite although you are using redirect flag in your current rules, and also assuming BBC to be static in id variable then try with below,
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^channel-([^/]+)-([^/]+).html$ channel.php?id=BBC&name=$1&date=$2 [L]
