I have a Linux EC2 instance. Apache in installed and up, so when I'm ssh'ed to my instance and do
curl localhost
I see a webpage served by my Apache. But when I try to access this page by URL (like http://ec2-xx-xx-xx-xx.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com) I get back only 503 error page on one Internet connection, 404 error page on other connection. access_log and error_log show no activity when I try to access the server by URL. I'm stuck. Please give me some tips how to solve this issue.
I guess missing logs on local hint us that http error messages returned by amazonaws.com itself not from your Apache server. Did you set the security for port TCP 80? ssh port is open as default but I am not sure for port 80
I fixed this by turning iptables off. So firewall was the problem. Thank you guys for help.

I'm working on a Linux VM on Azure which was set up by someone else (so I don't know all the details). I'm trying to connect it to a domain name.
The server has a "Hello World" program, so when I go to "example.com" I should be seeing "Hello World". Currently I'm just getting
Safari can't open the page "http://example.com" because Safari can't find the server "my domain.com"
I thought I'd start with making sure that the IP address connects to the server (which it did at one point. So I enter the IP address of the server (let's say it's "12.345.678.901") in the browser, and it can't connect... I get the error
Can't open the page "12.345.678.901" because the server where this page is located isn't responding
There's an Inbound port rule to allow connections for port 8080, so I tried "12.345.678.901:8080" but this time got
Can't open the page "12.345.678.901:8080" because Safari can't connect to the server
I don't know what to try next. Presumably something needs to be enabled on the server to allow the browser to connect?
The other inbound port rules are ssh on port 22 (TCP) and then what I assume are the standard Azure ones (I can't edit or delete them anyway).
To view your Linux VM inside the browser, you need to install a web server. Easiest to install and get working straight away is nginx.
First thing you need to do is SSH(port 22) into your VM using the username and IP address of the machine:
ssh username#ipaddress
Which will prompt you to enter a passphrase to gain access to the VM.
This also assumes your SSH public key exists inside ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the VM. If you don't have this setup then you need to get the owner of the VM to copy your public key into this file. Otherwise you won't be able to connect and get a Permission denied (publickey) error.
Assuming the above works, you can install the nginx webserver with the following two commands:
sudo apt-get -y update
sudo apt-get -y install nginx
Then once this web server is installed, add an HTTP inbound port 80 rule inside the network settings. For security reasons, having your web server listen on this port is probably unsecure long term. Its just easier to get working when you choose this port to begin with, because its the default.
You can see what the default listening port by viewing the server configuration host file with cat /etc/nginx/sites-available/default:

Which shows the default port of 80. You can change this default port to 8080, then run sudo service nginx restart to restart the server and apply the changes. Additionally, you can have a look at this How to make Nginx Server Listen on Multiple Ports tutorial, which goes into more depth on how to configure listening ports for nginx webservers.
You should then be able to view your VM from a browser window(blurred out my IP address for security reasons):

You should first check to see if you have an entry for http://example.com. The reason could be that you do not have a DNS Entry and when you are trying to connect to it via the browser. Since you tried connecting to it via IP and it still did not work, I would suggest you check your Webserver configurations to make sure it is correctly listening for port 8080. Also, ensure that your webserver is also turned on as well. You can tail the webserver log and try to hit it via the IP like you did earlier and see if you see any errors in the logs. It would at least tell you if your request you are making on your browser is actually getting to the webserver.
My server's hosted at DigitalOcean (it's a droplet) and basically, I cannot access my NodeJS app via Internet, only server-side. It's running on port 9000, I've allowed traffic to the port via ufw and iptables, no luck. When I run curl || wget while SSH-ed to the server, I get a normal response as if everything's in order. But when I try to access the server from an another machine, I just get timed out because the server returns nothing. I've heard DigitalOcean sometimes disable connections to all ports except ssh,www and ssl, but I think I've successfully 'opened' them. Any suggestions?

Turns out my dashboard was all messed up when it comes to ports, which I forgot to check, of course, so opening them directly on the server gave no results whatsoever.
Hi guys im newbie in vps... I've bought an ovh not managed vps . I like to face problems... But I don't find any documents to these one. Is simple like I said I want to run a nodejs app in centos vps environment but I have enabled plesk.. and I saw in console running the app with the trace but I try to open website with the port and doesn't find anything.

There is no error, in my console all is ok. Like I said i have an CentOS VPS. Steps that I did:
Connect with PUTTY
Go to folder where is the NodeJS project.
I set the port to 8080
Write node index.js
The app is running and writing the right trace.
I use chrome to check the ip, and show me the default plesk page.
I use wget to check it, and with only http://92.222.71.137/. I attach
an screenshot
I tried to use with the port 8080 with the chrome and wget in putty,
and the response was the same.
In the other hand if I use http://92.222.71.137:8080/login with putty
download the right login.html, and the nodejs app write a trace
indicate me that someone connect to that page. But if I access with
chrome is not working.
Now I would like no know how to make access frome Chrome.

You should give some other details on the configuration or eventual errors you get (both on the browser and the VPS) and how you run the node app (behind a web server, for example)
If you are not running you node app behind a web server, are the node app listening on the correct interface ? 127.0.0.1 and 92.222.71.137 (your site external address) are not the same.
On your VPS you can try to call the node app from the VPS itself using wget or cURL and looking for what happen in the app trace.
Finally it was easy... only i had to open a port to use with TCP, using

I am trying to setup a remote apache server on centos. I have installed httpd and it is listening to port 80 as it is supposed to. And I am able to connect to the remote system through ssh. but when I try to access the apache server on website using the ip address browser is giving 'Could not connect to error".

I have tried solutions from this question and none of them are working.
Could you have something using NAT in between ? If yes then you have to configure port forwarding.
If you disabled the SELinux using:
setenforce 0
then your server may be behind a firewall, or NAT, and port 80 need to be enabled there.
I have a VPS with node.js installed, I already uploaded a basic example to test it on the server, so I tried doing this:
I access by SSH, navigate to my project folder and run
node app.js
I get this message
Express server listening on port 8080
I thought i could see my app here
example.com:8080 or server.example:8080... but nothing. Then I tried with the info from os.networkInterfaces(); and os.host(); and still nothing happen
could you help me out? as you can see I am a total noob on node.js. What I'm doing wrong? or what should I do before running my app? Something related to DNS's? i have no idea
How do you ssh to your host? with ip or name? Is it something like:
ssh root#example.com
if so then at least you know your DNS is ok.
Once on the server do a
netstat -a
if you find *:8080 then your server is listening in the default ip. If you see something like 12.23.45.67:8080 then this number is the ip your server is listening.
ifconfig
will give you the servers ip. This should be the same as the ip of example.com. If not then maybe there is some router/firewall in front of your server and you have to configure that to allow port 8080 to reach your server.
