I have defined a variable inside one of the shell script to create the file name with date value in it.
I used "date +%Y%m%d" command to insert the current date which was defined in date_val variable.
And I have defined the filename variable to have "${path}/sample_${date_val}.txt
For few days it was creating the file name properly as /programfiles/sample_20180308.txt
But today the filename was created without date as /programfiles/sample_.txt
When I try to execute the command "date +%Y%m%d" in linux, it is returning the correct value - 20180309.
Any idea why the filename was created without the date value ??? . I did not modify anything in my script too. So wondering what might have gone wrong.

Although incredibly unlikely, it's certainly possible for date to fail, based on the source code. Under the covers, it calls either clock_gettime() or gettimeofday(), both of which can fail.
The date program will also refuse to output anything to standard output if the date from either of those two functions is out of range during the call to (which is possible if they fail).
It's also possible that the date program could "disappear" for various reasons, such as actually being hidden or permissions changed, or a shortage of resources like file handles when attempting to open the executable.
As mentioned, all these possibilities are a stretch, unlikely to happen in the real world.
If you want to handle the case where you get inadequate output from date, you can simply try until you get a valid one, something like (with the possibility of adding some limit to detect if it's never any good):
todaysDate="$(date +%Y%m%d)"
while [[ ! $x =~ ^[0-9]{8}$ ]] ; do
sleep 1
todaysDate="$(date +%Y%m%d)"
done
# todaysDate now guaranteed to be eight digits.
So This is related to my other two posts. Im dealing with extracting text from a text file and analyzing it and I've run into some problems. For A while I've been using a method that sets all the text between two other strings as a variable, but here is the situation I have. I need to extract the speed (numbers) from the below string: "etc...,query":{"ping":47855},"cmts":...etc. The problem is that the text cmts sometimes changes to something else so really I need to extract all the numbers from this:
,query":{"ping":47855},"
One more thing that makes this difficult is that the characters }," Are all over the file. Thank you for helping me! -Lucas EDG Programmer.

By the way, the reason things change is because it looks at info from different servers

I'm writing code in .csh, and I'm trying to change the bunit header for a FITS file from K (kelvin) to km/s. How can I do that?
I know in Python I would use new_fitsfile.header['BUNIT']='km/s', but that won't work in the current .csh code, and it's not an option to switch it to Python code.
If this is needed only once, call interactively fv or ds9, move to the header, edit the header card and save the result.
For generic batch jobs, one needs some online FITS editor like fmodhead fmodhead, fthedit, or my fedithead
sed "s:BUNIT = 'K ':BUNIT = 'km/s ':g" old.fits >new.fits
and be very careful to count the significant spaces.
here i am using set numCut [scan $inline1 "%d"] in tcl script for linux server, but after execting script it's showing below error

The ability to return the matched fields was added in Tcl 8.5. Prior to that, you had to supply a variable for each field that you had in the scan, and the result would be the number of fields matched (and it still is if you provide variable names).
Change:
set numCut [scan $inline1 "%d"]
to:
scan $inline1 "%d" numCut
Or switch to a more recent version of Tcl if you can, as 8.4 is almost out of its extended support period. (There will be a final patch release this summer to address some minor issues with build problems on recent systems, but that's it. We won't support it after that.)
I think that the Tcl error message is telling you that the number of specifiers in your format string %d is different to the number of variables in your Tcl command scan $inline1 "%d".
So, you have one format specifier, and no variables and that's what the Tcl interpreter is telling you.
Try changing your command to scan $inline1 "%d" numCut and see if that works any better.
