.htaccess rewriting url from subdirectory - .htaccess

I have entries in my .htaccess that goes like this:
RewriteRule ^$ dubai/ [R]
RewriteRule ^dubai/$ page/index.php [L]
RewriteRule ^$ pakistan/ [R]
RewriteRule ^pakistan/$ page/index.php [L]
basically I want to make a rule that can handle countries as part of the rewrite, the above code i have is redundant and can cause the file to grow unnecessarily.
Is there a way to automatically redirect the page to page/index.php if it serves for any countries? I tried putting this line to the last line above:
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z\/]*)/$ page/index.php
My problem is it no longer reads the succeeding rules for the other pages to serve. The below lines are samples of the rules just below the last one above:
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z\/]*)rent/$ page/index.php?methodcall=rent&for=Rent
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z\/]*)landlords/$ page/index.php?methodcall=landlords
What happens is the get vars are no longer read by index.php file, if i remove the last rewriterule the key vars are read properly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Try this:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)(\/?)$ page/index.php [NC,QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/rent(\/?)$ page/index.php?methodcall=rent&for=Rent [NC,QSA,L]
RewriteRule ^([a-z]+)/landlords(\/?)$ page/index.php?methodcall=landlords [NC,QSA,L]

Need Assistance for this Htaccess Rewrite Rule

I have a problem with my .htaccess, a short explanation I would like to set http://example.com/newest on my website. However, it always redirects to http://example.com/postname. Where I just need the exact "newest" page. Here is my code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^[^/]+$ %{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301]
RewriteRule ^/category/(.*)$ page.php?f=$1
RewriteRule ^/search/(.*)$ search.php?f=$1
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ post.php?f=$1 <- If this is removed, my post htaccess will not work
RewriteRule ^newest/$ index.php?f=newest <- I want to execute this code
I really don't know what this is called, I have been looking for the whole stackoverflow but I did not get any answer. Please remain me if this is a duplicate question.
As Mohammed implied in comments, your directives are in the wrong order. The line above your "newest" rewrite is a catch-all and rewrites all requests, so the last line will never match.
http://example.com/newest
Note that your rules imply that your URLs should end in a trailing slash. So, you should be linking to http://example.com/newest/ (with a trailing slash), not http://example.com/newest, otherwise your users will get a lot of unnecessary redirects.
However, you appear to be under the belief that the RewriteCond directive applies to all the directives that follow. This is not the case. It only applies to the first RewriteCond directive. You also need some L flags to prevent further processing.
You also have a slash prefix on the "category" and "search" rewrite patterns, so these would never match in a .htaccess context.
Try something like the following instead:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# Don't process the request further if it maps to an existing file
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule ^ - [L]
# Append trailing if omitted
# Although strictly speaking this only redirects if there are no slashes at all in the URL
RewriteRule ^[^/]+$ %{REQUEST_URI}/ [L,R=301]
RewriteRule ^category/(.*)$ page.php?f=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^search/(.*)$ search.php?f=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^newest/$ index.php?f=newest [L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ post.php?f=$1 [L]

301redirect to remove folder from URL

I have:
mydomain.com/folder-name/segment1/segment2
I want to change it to:
mydomain.com/segment1/segment2
using a 301 redirect.
I've tried:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/test/.*$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /test/$1 [L]
but its not working
here is my htacess file:
# #AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php .php5 .php4 .php3
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/b1/.*$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /b1/$1 [R=301,L]
The answer for the first part of the question should be like this:
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/? $2/$3 [R=301,L]
The second code that you've tried is the opposite of what you're asking for initially. This line matches anything not starting with /test/:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/test/.*$
This line says take everything and rewrite it to the /test/ directory:
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /test/$1 [L]
So together anything that's not in the test directory is being rewritten to the test directory.
If you're trying to specifically remove the word test then you would remove the ! symbol in your attempt to create a match. Since you already know it's called test there's no need to even make Apache perform this look for 'test' because Apache handles the RewriteCond statement after the RewriteRule (rather unintuitively).
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/?test
You can specialize the rewrite rule like this (I've added [QSA] to catch any query strings:
RewriteRule ^test/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/? $1/$2/ [R=301,L,QSA]
Simply change your code to:
RewriteRule ^test/(.*)$ /$1 [R=301,L,NC]

htaccess rewrite for subdomain only

I'm trying to rewrite some parameters to beautiful links, but for a subdomain / a folder only. Unfortunately I can't get it to work, maybe also because there are some other rewrites in line before...
Heres my code:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
# NON-WWW TO WWW
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example.com
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
# WORDPRESS-BLOG
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
# REDIRECT FOR SUBDOMAIN
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^subdomain.example.com
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)(?:/)?$ index.php?cshort=$1 [L]
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)/([^/.]+)(?:/)?$ /index.php?cshort=$1&cid=$2 [L]
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)/([^/.]+)/([^/.]+)(?:/.*)?$ /index.php?cshort=$1&cid=$2&step=$3 [L]
</IfModule>
Basically only the last part is the one I want to rewrite to change URLs from something like
http://subdomain.example.com/index.php?cshort=abc&cid=123&step=1 to http://subdomain.example.com/abc/123/1
The other rewriting rules for www.example.com shouldn't get affected. Unfortunately my current codes only does the first two rules for the blog and the www, but nothing happens on the subdomain. What's wrong in my code?
When you say that you want to rewrite from http://subdomain.example.com/index.php?cshort=abc&cid=123&step=1 to http://subdomain.example.com/abc/123/1 you mean that you want the user to enter the pretty URL and to have it serve the full URL in the background, not that you want to redirect from the ugly to the pretty URL, right?
In your RewriteRules, what are you trying to accomplish with "(?:/)?"? As written, that doesn't make any sense to me. If you're just trying to match whether or not the directory path ends with a slash, you can do that as follows:
RewriteRule ^([^/.]+)/?$ index.php?cshort=$1 [L]
EDIT: Additional suggestions:
Move the "Redirect for subdomain" section above the "Wordpress Blog" section. Since the Wordpress rule applies to "everything that's not a real file or directory, regardless of domain" that should go last.
RewriteConds only apply to a single RewriteRule that follows them. For each of the three rules you have listed under "Redirect for subdomain", after updating them per the above suggestion, you need to repeat the two RewriteCond lines in front of the RewriteRule.

.htaccess mod_rewrite won't skip RewriteRule with [S]

As an FYI, I am using the following .htaccess file in located at www.site.com/content/
When a user visits www.site.com/content/login I want it to display the content from www.site.com/content/userlogin.php (masked via rewrite, and not redirect) - which I have done SUCCESSFULLY like so:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /content/
RewriteRule ^login/?$ /content/userlogin.php [NC,L]
However, I would like to add the follwoing: If they try to access www.site.com/content/userlogin.php directly, I want them to get redirected to a 404 page at www.site.com/content/error/404.php
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /content/
RewriteRule ^login/?$ /content/userlogin.php [NC,S=1,L]
RewriteRule ^userlogin\.php$ /content/error/404.php [NC,L]
With that in the .htaccess file, both www.site.com/content/login and www.site.com/content/userlogin.php show www.site.com/content/error/404.php
First the S=1 will have no function as the L directive will make any further rewriting stop.
It seems like the first RewriteRule makes Apache go through the .htaccess rules one more time, so you need to know if the first rewrite has happend. You could do this by setting an environment variable like this:
RewriteRule ^login/?$ /content/userlogin.php [E=DONE:true,NC,L]
So when the next redirect occurs the Environment variable actually gets rewritten to REDIRECT_<variable> and you can do a RewriteCond on this one like this:
RewriteCond %{ENV:REDIRECT_DONE} !true
RewriteRule ^userlogin\.php$ /content/error/404.php [NC,L]
Hope this helps
Use %{THE_REQUEST} variable in your code instead:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /content/
RewriteRule ^login/?$ content/userlogin.php [NC,L]
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,}\s/+userlogin\.php[\s\?] [NC]
RewriteRule ^ content/error/404.php [L]

htaccess remove the duplicate names in the urls

I have this page and if you scroll to the middle of the page you will see many links that all have duplicate names like for example
http://healingstreamsusa.org/healing/healing/good-grief.html
http://healingstreamsusa.org/healing/healing/forgiveness-not-option.html
As you can see there are two healing/healing instead of the one healing/ so the urls are all breaking and there are many sitewide...The client made all the urls relative instead of absolute and now he needs an htaccess that will remove the duplicates in the middle....here is what i have and its doesnt do the redirect as i expected....am i missing something
RewriteCond %(REQUEST_URI) ^/healing/healing[/]?
RewriteRule (.*) http://healingstreamsusa.org/healing? [R=301,L]
Tried all these.....
RewriteRule /about/about/(.+)$ /about/$1 [R=301]
RewriteRule /about/images/(.+)$ /images/$1 [R=301]
RewriteRule /healing/images/stories/(.+)$ /images/stories/$1 [R=301]
RewriteRule /healing/healing/(.+)$ /healing/$1 [R=301]
RewriteRule ^healing/healing/([^/]*)$ /healing/$1
Any idea why this would not work....
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^healing/healing/([^/]*)$ healing/$1
RewriteRule ^about/about/([^/]*) about/$1
