JSF2 logs with tomcat - jsf

I'm having a project using JSF2 (2.1.2), Richfaces4 (4.0.0.Final) on tomcat6 (6.0.28). In order to manage portability between Tomcat and WebSphere7 for my EARs, I have the following jars inside my tomcat lib: el-api-2.2.jar, jsf-api-2.1.2.jar, jsf-impl-2.1.2.jar, validation-api-1.0.0.GA.jar.
My problem is that I never managed to change the log levels of JSF or Richfaces and except from the initialization ones, I don't see any inside my console. Even when I get exceptions in my server response !
I tried several ways:
1) Inside my applications, I'm using slf4j and log4j. So the natural way would be to use SLF4JBridgeHandler.install(). I made a small servlet to call this method during its init() method and added a 'load-on-startup' to be sure it's loaded before JSF Servlet (I'm not sure tomcat cares at all about this load-on-startup directive because I still get logs from JSF init before), e.g.:
INFO: JSF1027 : [null] Les objets ELResolvers de JSF n’ont pas été enregistrés avec le conteneur JSP.
09-09-2011 16:50:58:591 [Thread-2] 937 DEBUG com.jsf.test.SLF4JBridgeHandlerInstallerServlet - SLF4JBridgeHandler.install() OK!
I also added some configuration in my log4j.xml:
<logger name="javax.faces"><level value="debug"/></logger>
<logger name="com.sun.faces"><level value="debug"/></logger>
<logger name="javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf"><level value="debug"/></logger>
But I don't see any logs in my console when displaying a JSF page...
I also tried using a filter to call SLF4JBridgeHandler.install() before the execution of the JSF Servlet, but I only get a lot of OK logs from my filter...
2) I tried to follow the tutorial here exactly (it creates new files in tomcat log folder for each logger of JSF2). I tried by changing the logging.properties inside the conf folder of tomcat and by adding a new logging.properties inside my src/resources/ folder in my application. But no luck...
3) I tried to add the JSF loggers to the the logging.properties inside my tomcat by adding this:
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.managedbean.level=FINEST
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.managedbean.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.config.level=FINEST
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.config.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.facelets.level=FINEST
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.facelets.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.resource.level=FINEST
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.resource.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.lifecycle.level=FINEST
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.lifecycle.handlers = java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler
No luck yet...
4) I tried to use log4j inside tomcat instead of juli by following this documentation. It seems to work well, but changing the resulting log4j.properties to put the JSF loggers in DEBUG didn't work...
Any idea ?
Regards,
Florian

Two facts:
JSF uses java.util.logging API which is to be configured by a logging.properties file in the root of the runtime classpath.
The logging.properties file of the currently(!) running runtime environment (JRE) will be used.
If you're running Tomcat from inside an IDE like Eclipse, then Tomcat's own logging.properties won't be used. The one in JDK/JRE/lib will be used where "JDK" is the JDK install folder such as jdk1.6.0_23. If you'd like to explicitly specify the location of the logging.properties file, then you would need to set a VM argument:
-Djava.util.logging.config.file=/path/to/tomcat/logging.properties
Regardless of the logging file used, in order to enable Mojarra logging, you need to open the logging.properties template file in question, scroll to the bottom and edit the following line near the bottom
java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = INFO
into
java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler.level = ALL
so that the global console level is set to ALL instead of INFO. Otherwise lower levels than INFO just won't be logged at all.
Finally add the following two lines to the very bottom of the file
javax.faces.level = ALL
com.sun.faces.level = ALL
javax.enterprise.resource.webcontainer.jsf.level = ALL
The first turns on all JSF API logging, the second turns on all JSF impl (Mojarra) logging, and the third turns on all JSF Java EE logging.

PrimeFaces 6 FileUploadFilter configuration with Spring Boot embedded Jetty

org.primefaces.webapp.filter.FileUploadFilter does not registered to my application, unless I define FileUploadFilter explicitly in my spring configuration like;
#Bean
FileUploadFilter fileUploadFilter() {
return new FileUploadFilter();
}
Referring to this question;
If you're however not using JSF 2.2 yet and you can't upgrade it
(should be effortless when already on a Servlet 3.0 compatible
container), then you need to manually register the below PrimeFaces
file upload filter in web.xml (it will parse the multi part request
and fill the regular request parameter map so that FacesServlet can
continue working as usual)
Conversely I have javax.faces in my classpath: org.glassfish:javax.faces:jar:2.2.13:compile. (and mojarra impl)
Should we go manually with this? Or else It can not be detected and registered automatically, we have to register a manual configuration to joinfaces
UPDATE: Actually this is not directly relevant to registration of FileUploadFilter. Embedded jetty in spring-boot does not pick up annotated configurations example of which FacesServlet has a #MultipartConfig annotation. I have opened an issue to spring-boot for that:
https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/6681
https://github.com/spring-projects/spring-boot/issues/6680 will fix the issue. WebServletHandler will pick up #MultipartConfig annotated classes.

Liberty profile: birt and jsf integration

I'm building a web application running on Liberty profile 8.5, with JSF 2.0 feature enabled (jsf-2.0 in server.xml) and BIRT integration in the web app.
The web application includes all BIRT needed libs in WEB-INF/lib folder, but the only way to make it working (specially for chart report) is to set the classloader to 'parentlast' in the server.xml:
<webApplication contextRoot="MyApp" id="MyApp" location="MyApp.war" name="MyApp">
<classloader delegation="parentLast"/>
</webApplication>
In this way, I correctly see charts and reports.
But the 'parentlast' setting makes JSF not working, with this exception:
[ERROR ] SRVE0315E: An execption occurred:
com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.webapp.WebAppErrorReport:
javax.servlet.ServletException: SRVE0207E: Uncaught initialization
exception created by servlet at
com.ibm.ws.webcontainer.servlet.ServletWrapper.init(ServletWrapper.java:385)
at [internal classes] Caused by: javax.servlet.ServletException:
SRVE0207E: Uncaught initialization exception created by servlet ... 3
more
Caused by: java.lang.IllegalStateException: No Factories configured for this Application. This happens if the faces-initialization does not work at all - make sure that you properly include all configuration settings necessary for a basic faces application and that all the necessary libs are included. Also check the logging output of your web application and your container for any exceptions!
If you did that and find nothing, the mistake might be due to the fact that you use some special web-containers which do not support registering context-listeners via TLD files and a context listener is not setup in your web.xml.
A typical config looks like this;
<listener><listenerclass>org.apache.myfaces.webapp.StartupServletContextListener</listener-class>
</listener>
Without the parentlast setting, the JSF pages are correctly shown, but BIRT charts don't work.
I understand this behaviour, as the parentlast classloading makes the application seeing at first the application libs, where JSF is not included (it's loaded at server scope).
Any suggestion?
Thank you in advance!

JSF 1.2 application not getting deployed on websphere 8.5

I am trying to deploy JSF 1.2 application on WAS 8.5 server. But it is throwing below error on deployment.
Note: In the WAS admin, Under JSF implementation use console, I have selected the "Sun Reference Implementation 1.2 " option . But still problem persist.

You should restart the application server (not just the app). You should also make sure jsf-api.api and jsf-impl.jar are not in WEB-INF/lib of your app.

Implementing EL 2.2 on tomcat 6

I was trying to enable EL 2.2 on tomcat 6.0.41 on windows 7.
I read this: http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/HowToEnableEl22
and this: JSF - call method with parameter (tomcat6)
and this: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: The function test must be used with a prefix when a default namespace is not specified
and also this: Can EL 2.2 capable JSF web applications be deployed to shared Tomcat 6 hosting environment?
and tried to follow them all but with no luck, I still get the following error:
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: /DashBoard.jsp(234,7) The function
setSelectedExperiment must be used with a prefix when a default
namespace is not specified
on this line of code:
action="#{dashBoardController.setSelectedExperiment(experiment)}"
I did the following:
downloaded the el jars from here:
http://download.java.net/maven/2/javax/el/el-api/2.2/el-api-2.2.jar
http://download.java.net/maven/2/org/glassfish/web/el-impl/2.2/el-impl-2.2.jar
and put them under WEB-INF/lib
I removed el-api.jar from tomcat6/lib
i added this to web.xml:
<context-param>
<param-name>com.sun.faces.expressionFactory</param-name>
<param-value>com.sun.el.ExpressionFactoryImpl</param-value>
</context-param>
all according to the guidelines in apache wiki
Yet, as I said, I get the error above.

CometD demo on JBoss 6

I am planning to use Cometd library in my application that runs on JBoss AS 6. Therefore I downloaded cometd 2.4.0 and tried to deploy example war (from cometd-demo/target) to my AS. I was aware that this was not possible without modifications, so I did the changes in web.xml:
Changed to servlet 3.0 in web-app tag (it is originally 2.5). Used complete tag from CometD faq answer. Also uncommented continuation filter that was already in web.xml, based on this description
Based on faq answer, added async-supported tag. However, this causes problems: if I just uncomment it, web.xml can't be parsed. I found out that this is due to order of tags in XML, so moved async-supported tag down the order, just after load-on-startup tag. However, Jboss still throws exceptions:
ERROR
[org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[jboss.web].[localhost].[/cometd-demo-2.4.0].[cometd]]
Servlet.service() for servlet cometd threw exception:
java.lang.IllegalStateException: The servlet or filters that are being
used by this request do not support async operation
ERROR
[org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[jboss.web].[localhost].[/cometd-demo-2.4.0].[cometd]]
Servlet.service() for servlet cometd threw exception:
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
org.eclipse.jetty.server.AbstractHttpConnection from
BaseClassLoader#12a54b
Complete web.xml file that I use is here.
Example runs no my Jboss despite all errors reported, but by watching firebug, I can see that it does quick pooling instead of long pool. It seems that server thinks that browser has multiple connections open, which is not the case (see JSON below):
[{"id":"137","successful":true,"advice":{"interval":2000,"reconnect":"retry","multiple-clients":true,"timeout":20000},"channel":"/meta/connect"}]
Did anyone managed to make examples work with JBoss as6 and how? What I did wrong here?
remove:
<!-- Portability Filter, needed only to run on non Jetty or non Servlet-3.0 containers -->
<filter>
<filter-name>continuation</filter-name>
<filter-class>org.eclipse.jetty.continuation.ContinuationFilter</filter-class>
</filter>
<filter-mapping>
<filter-name>continuation</filter-name>
<url-pattern>/cometd/*</url-pattern>
</filter-mapping>
from web.xml
I have the same setup and the same problem even if I remove continuation filter from web.xml.
I've found a thread on cometd-users group complaining about multiple-client issue on Tomcat 7 and the cause seems to be a Tomcat bug around Content-Type that is not set to "application/json".
However I've inspected packets and on JBossAS6 the content-type is correctly set on server responses.
UPDATE
I've give a try using Jetty 7 and the problem disappeared. The "multiple-clients" issue affects Tomcat as well as JBoss6 AS
