How to implement online edit excel on Asp.net MVC - excel

I have an excel file in the web server. I want to open the file and make some change then save it back online. What is the quickest and dirty way to do that?
In addition to that ,how to lock the excel file and notiy other person who want to edit it ?

If I understand correctly, the quickest way in my opinion would be to download the file onto your hard drive. Make the changes. And then upload it online.
To lock the excel file you need to set a password. In excel 2003 click tools, then click options, then go to the security tab. Enter a password so that when someone tries to open it, they are prompted to enter a password. If they don't enter the correct one, they can't open the file.

Links to Excel files are opening differently for different users

I have a link to an Excel file that opens in Excel Online. When opening it, some users are getting prompted to open the file in Excel 2016 and some users are getting prompted to open with 'Url:Excel Protocol. Due to network restrictions, all users who are prompted to open with 'Url:Excel Protocol' are not able to open the document. I need everyone to be prompted to open in Excel 2016. Any way to make this consistent for all users? I appreciate any ideas! Thanks!
Here is how my link is formatted: /sites/TEAMSite/TEST%20Documents/TEST_742/FY18%20TEST%20Doc%20TEST%20Rev2.xlsm?Web=1

Uploaded excel workbook to SharePoint auto updates when changes made to the original

I have uploaded an excel workbook we constantly update to SharePoint for coworkers to view remotely as it has information they need. Would I have to delete and replace the workbook every time we make a change or is there a way that the workbook in SharePoint can automatically update with changes we make to the original which is on a Y drive? Thank you for any assistance.
When using SharePoint I find that there's an option to view the files in a document library using Windows Explorer. When you do that you can get the path out of the address bar and use that to update the file instead of the 'Y' drive. Benefit being you could also turn on version history in SharePoint then whenever anyone uploads a new version you can go to the past versions through SharePoint.
If your users don't all have access to SharePoint you could drag and drop from the Y drive to the address from the 'View in Windows Explorer' link or even automate it by writing a DOS batch job using the COPY command to copy the file over. Then you can use windows task scheduler to run the .BAT file however often you want.
Hope that helps!

Adding a mapping to Hosts file and cannot save

I am trying to add a mapping to the Hosts file for my SharePoint site. Every time I hit save, it opens the Save As... dialog box and then says I need to save in My Documents, as I do not have permission to alter the Hosts file in its original location. I tried this on two accounts with Admin rights and the results were the same. Where can I enable this right?
Note: If it helps, this is for a SharePoint 2010 project. I am remotely connected to a server via RDP.
If it's anything involving permissions, odds are you need to open programs as administrator. A wise rule to abide by.
For this you can just open your fresh notepad as administrator... and then from File menu select your host file location and open file. After that edit the host file and save..... It will save without asking anything... :)

Sharepoint 2007: Disabling Edit/Read Only mode?

If I open a doc in read only mode I'm able to press save and then it opens up a save as box and the default directory is the directory on the sharepoint server and if you press save you save it to the server.
This actually makes the whole process not really "read only" mode since I could actually update the document.
Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that if someone chooses read only there is no way possible to updload any changes back to the sharepoint site?
Also, it has been suggested as a solution to get rid of the edit/read only option so that people have to check out the document. Is there a way to remove the edit/read only option on documents?
Rather than relying on the client software to prevent saving, you need to modify the permissions on the server - give the user read only access to the document or even the whole list. That way they will get an access denied error if they try what you describe or uploading a different file with the same name.
The Read-only and Edit prompt are driven by SharePoint and a setting in the DOCICON.XML file. If you have added PDF as a Document extension inside the DOCICON.XML you will need to also add an additional attribute in the line and that is opencontrol=”” this seems to stop SharePoint from applying it's header to open the document.
<Mapping Key="pdf" Value="icpdf.gif" OpenControl=""/>

(Edit : Sorry I have not tested this on SharePoint 2007 only SharePoint 2010)

How do I put a File (Excel) online (Apache Server) with Password Protection but with the Option for Users to alter the File and save the changes?

I have to put an excel file online on a web server (Apache) with some basic password protection (basic http auth). User, however, should be able to open the file from within excel and save their changes back to the server.
Is there any simple and effective solution for it? I am not very experienced with webdav.
Maybe use Google Docs to share the document. That would be as turn-key as it gets. :)
Funny enough, if you just need "basic-level" security, you can set it up in the Excel sheet itself:Go to the Tools -> Protection menu and you can lock down the whole sheet, or just specific ranges.Note This is not "really good" security and will not stand up against an even moderately-skilled attack...but it will pass muster for the most basic uses.
Webdav can do this. Might be a hassle to set it up.
