Updating old Sharepoint site with Sharepoint 2010 - how to update old navigation - sharepoint

First off, I am not a programmer and so I am simply trying to update an old Sharepoint site using Sharepoint tools. The difficulty I have been having is that the site has a lot of archives and pages that I don't want to recreate if possible. Therefore, I have been renaming and adding pages to an old site (originally creating via an earlier version of Sharepoint) and as I create these new pages/site within the share they look and navigate very differently from the old. How can I either update the old navigation to the new or vise versa so that the site all looks and navigates the same?
Any tips on this would be greatly appreciated

Your old pages were probably edited using SharePoint Designer and that's why they do not get the new look&feel. You could reset this changes using Site Setting Reset to Site Definition option, but it could make changes to the site you don't want (it was probably edited for a reason). I would suggest making the change on a test copy and then you will see what is changed and how it can be fixed.

This solution will allow programmers and non-programmers to work on navigation. You will be able to update the navigation using the site settings>navigation and allow the programmers to customize the styling however they wish. You can also put as many levels of sub-entres as you want.

I want to implement SharePoint, but I want to design it my way

I am aware of a program called "SharePoint Designer 20xx), and I would like to know if any of you have modified the default master page to make it.. less confusing and more simplistic. Can this be however I want it or is there limitations?
I also found this:
http://www.expertsharepointconsulting.com/images/Blue%20Large.PNG
I would like to implement a design similar to this! If I were to download a "Free sharepoint master page", would this design only work for the main page of SharePoint? as in if I were to go from the newly added masterpage, to a page called "reports", would it be completely different? If so how can I get around this?
You can create customized masterpages whichever way you want. Usually you don't touch the default ones, specially because you can break some system pages with that. Just create new ones from them or from the minimum.master one.
As an example of a Sharepoint Website using a very customized master page I can point you to a publishing website project I was involved for a Portuguese company: http://www.ana.pt/en-US/Pages/Homepage.aspx
It's all Sharepoint 2010...and it is fully customized
You can of course use the same template for all pages, just have to set it on the root site and say that all sub sites inherit from it.
To achieve the level of design changes you see on that web site you have to build new master pages, page layouts, use JS, CSS and user controls (the website uses little to no web parts).
we don't use Sharepoint designer because that would mean the files becoming unghosted, which can be pain sometimes, and sharepoint designer is not a very good tool.
The way we do it is by implementing everything on visual studio and deploying it via WSP packages. This way everything stays ghosted on the file system. You can check an example here:

Deploying site pages in SharePoint

I have around 9 web parts and 3 pages to be deployed. Each page will be having 3 webparts.
From a deploymnet perspective, i think i have the following two options:
Deploy the pages using a feature. The pages will have webparts present.
Create a custom site definition with a document library and have the three pages as part of the document library.
Can you please let me know which one of the options is better or is there any better solution?.
Please note that the solution needs to work on WSS 3.0 as well.
I would code the whole thing as a feature. You can staple it to the site definition for the site type you want it activated on.
If ever you need to migrate to the next version of SharePoint or another server it is easier to not have any custom site definitions. Also, the features leaves the site in a normal out-of-the box state; if you ever remove the feature nothing breaks.
Also, unlike the site definition it will also allow you to run it on sites that where created in the past.
First you need to deploy the webparts using WSP. Once it populated in webpart gallery you can copy the pages from page library and can paste in production.

How do modify a form on a sharepoint site?

I have a task that I need to perform for a friend as a favor, to modify some forms on a MOSS/Sharepoint site to add some javascript to each form for some SEO tracking purposes.
I've had a little bit of exposure to Sharepoint, but it is mostly by using the Sharepoint Designer 2007 tool.
I am able to navigate to the site, and I can see the content in Sharepoint Designer. However, I am not able to see the forms, and I'm a bit stuck.
Here is an example of a form that I need to modify:
http://www.MY_SITE_GOES_HERE.com/forms/covg_order.aspx
I've read a little online, but I'm stuck. I don't know if these are infopath forms or what. I just need to modify the forms.
Is there a simple answer to this problem? Or a good resource to get up to speed quickly for this task?
I'm not a sharepoint expert, so thank you in advance for answering a simple question.
While hardly the simplest approach, but since this is a developer site, I would recommend creating a DelegateControl to add to your site. Using DelegateControls has several benefits, for example:
the ability to selectively activate and deactivate the controls through features
no need to modify any out-of-the-box files which would break supportability
ability to output different content on a page-by-page basis
You can opt to use one of the DelegateControls of the default master pages if you need to deploy to an existing site based on one of the default site definitions. The AdditionalPageHead is a favorite among developers, as it allows multiple overrides to be active at the same time.
If you want to create your own master pages you can add DelegateControls as you like.
If you want to learn more about DelegateControls you can check out the first issue of Understanding SharePoint Journal (Disclaimer: I wrote that issue). Also, check out the MSDN article on How to customize a Delegate Control.

you can also check PowerForms which is a silverlight webpart that fully customizes sharepoint forms. You can add business logic in forms using custom assemblies and a lot other advanced tasks. Give it a try, i think it will solve a lot of problems.

You have a couple of options here:
If you need to add a unique code, like Google analytics you should probably deploy your code to the master page.
In case you need to customize forms for lists you will have to do it with SharePoint designer. In that case you will find EditItem.aspx and NewItem.aspx with SharePoint Designer pages or any other custom page. Open SPD, locate your list, expand it, look for Forms subfolder and you will find all the forms there.
Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer is now free, as of 1-Apr-2009. It's a good tool, not only for modifying individual pages, but for entire sites.

Create SharePoint web page outside of document library

I'm reasonably new to SharePoint 2007 and trying to move from an ASP.NET to SharePoint way of thinking has been an interesting experience!
I would like to create a page at the same level as the default.aspx page in a subsite. The "SharePoint way" of doing things involves putting the page into a document library. I am reluctant to do this as the breadcrumb navigation of the page then includes the name of the libarary but I would like the library to be transparent to the user.
I can create a page in the right place in SharePoint designer but I can't find a way to use a SharePoint template. I have tried copying the default.aspx page, but the navigation linkes are not updated.
Am I missing something or can someone suggest a solution?
I see what you are saying. I would like to share my thoughts on how I will do it.
If the Breadcrumb is your only reason why you want to move to a different than lib, the I recommend you to override the ContentPlaceholder that has the BreadCrumb in your Page, so that BreadCrumb wont be there. But URL will be there for the User to Guess ./DocLib/default.aspx.
And if the reason to hide the document library is to make sure that you don't want to allow the user to get into the Lib and change something. I recommend you strip out the permission from the Document Lib and give all the user ReadOnly and add the user with more right who you thing will need to edit the pages.
And finally you wanted to it in a Place, you can try deploying them as a Feature that will provision the pages as Ghostable rather then GhostableInLibray.
While 1,3 cab be packaged in a WSP. 2 one needs bit of a Manual / custom Code if you are trying to automate the process.
Steps to create Ghostable pages you can refer to this
It doesn't seem to be possible. Subsites can be used to be categorise content by topic, but they can't be used very much.

Deploying Layouts in SharePoint

I am developing publishing site. I have some layouts that are pre-populated with web parts and have a problem when I need to make some change on the layout.
Deployment succeeds but I still see old version. If make I change in SP Designer it is reflected OK but not if the change is done by the feature that is being deployed.
It looks like after I deploy particular layout any site collection in that web application will have the first version.
I have tried deleting complete site, all the pages, layouts and nothing happens, after deployment I still see old layout.
Current solution for this problem was that I take new virtual image and start with clean machine.
Real problem is how to solve this on clients installation without reverting to clean machine. There will be some bug fixes and I will have to send new WSP file with some changes in layout.
Is there any way to force SharePoint to use newly deployed layout and not some old Unghosted version?
If the layouts are without web parts I don't have this problem.
Update
I am using default "Publishing Portal" and deploying layouts using features. For development I am using VSeWSS 1.3.
tried in SharePoint designer to detach page from layout and attach it again but still no results.
Since you are using VSeWSS, you can execute your own code upon feature activation. So try writing an SPFeatureReceiver that will call SPWeb.RevertAllDocumentContentStreams() to reghost directly after feature activation on the web(s) in question.
If this doesn't work, then the problem isn't about ghosting, maybe it's about Orphans then. But try this first.
If it's a feature that you are deploying you have do deactivate the feature and activate it after deployment again. And don't forget to do an IISRESET or an AppPool recycle.
If your new site collection has the first version of the layout make sure that it is really your new feature version that you are activating.
Try to reject your solution first and add the new one after that.
Are you using Site Definitons or Site Templates? If you are using either of these it may not update after initial provisioning.
Try completely retracting and deleting the solution from central admin, resetting AppPools and then redeploying the solution.
Make sure your element manifest for your feature specifies that existing files should be overwritten.
Looks like some folks have had problems with layouts too...
See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms459213.aspx
If you are developing new sitedefinition, you can attach your new layout in the onet.xml file by using the property, i hope it will help you
