Looking to put the following into my htaccess file:
User visits http://mysite.com/test/test/123
User is actually visiting http://mysite.com/test/index.php?q=123
I have seen it done before but I can't figure it out. The user is not supposed to see that they are visiting the second url. This is particularly useful for SEO. Can anyone help me on this one?

I have edited my /etc/hosts file to link domain.com to my localhost. Now when I visited domain.com I want it to get the site contents from domain.com/site/ but only using the URL domain.com thus removing site/ from the URL.
I have done this once before, so I know it's possible, but I lost the code. Can someone please assist me? .htaccess scripting is not my strong. Apologies if this is a duplicate of something else.

I want to redirect website user to www.mywebsite/users.php?user=xyz when the user types http://xyz.mywebsite.com into the address bar where http://xyz.mywebsite.com is virtual and doesnt exist.

If that does not work (I take that from your comment), you have to check where the actual problem is:
does rewriting work at all?
does this rule do anything atall? what?
is that rule ignored? why?
What absolutely makes most sense in such cases is to turn on rewrite logging to see and understand what is actually happening inside the rewrite engine. Please take a look at the two commands RewriteLog and RewriteLogLevel inside the manual mentioned. Enable a log level of maybe 7 and look what is logged when you make a single request. It should give you an idea of where to look for the cause of the problem.
I have a website. I created a mirror of it and uploaded it in a directory called 'mirror'. What I wanted to do is whenever a viewer access for example..

I want him to be redirected to..

(I am doing this because I want to want to edit my site's design but I don't want viewers to see the changes in progress until they are complete. Thus I want to redirect them to the mirrored snapshot, at least temporarily.)

I'm having some mod_rewrite problems with my .htaccess..

Above is what I'm currently using. However, I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest as I'm just cycling through the internet trying to figure this out.
Basically, for my website, if you type in
www.domain.com/folder/xxx/
I want it to basically be www.domain.com/folder/basic.php?url=xxx.
For some reason, all that does is cause a 404 error :/
So can someone please politely point me in the right direction?

Turn on the Rewrite Module to enable URL rewriting
RewriteBase /folder
Rewrite the Base Directory to directory name folder
RewriteRule ^folder/(.*)$ basic.php?url=$1 [L]
Remap every request make using the folder/***** to basic.php?url=********
Note: RewriteEngine On Should be the first statement on your case

As said in the Title,I want that http://www.example.com/contact should show http://www.example.com/contact.php. And important: without redirecting.

I do believe you have to put the / at the beginning of contact because it's part of the path.
Try this:

The only way to make the URL at the top show .php when going to the URL without PHP would be to redirect the browser to it. The easiest way to do that in most apache instances would be:
Redirect permanent /contact http://example.com/contact.php
