I have created an asp.net web application on my local machine and I am deploying it to sharepoint. For that I am refereing the following

Its works perfect on my local machine but when I was trying to deploy the same on clients machine it was giving me the "An unexpected error has occurred." Error.
The scenario is, There is not visual studio install on my clients machine so what I was doing is I simply copying my solution folder in 12'hives LAYOUT folder along with the bin folder. Then when I was try to access it by hitting the URL
http://[machineName]/_layouts/[MyCustomFolder]/default.aspx it was giving me the error mention above.
Can anyone help me to solve this issue..?

Unexpected error might be anything, You need to see what is the root cause of the Error,
Open the Web.Config file of the IIS SharePoint WebSite
Search for the CallStack and change it to CallStack="true"
Search for the CustomError and change it to CustomError="Off"
Browse the page you will get to know the actual issue that causes the error
You yourself can rectify it , it might be as simple as missing dll
Try to watch the logfiles, set logging level to maximum to be sure you see what sharepoint says about your page.
To do that, if you have access to the server:
open SharePoint Central Admin
go to Operations tab, select "Diagnostic logging"
select category 'All' and change the trace log level to 'Verbose', save changes
reset IIS server (for the purpose of a clean experiment)
open \\server\c$\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12
logs and order by modification date
try to load your webpage in /_layouts folder, see the error again
open the newest logfile you can see and search for [MyCustomFolder] name
Then post the error message here.
An unexpected error can have multiple reasons.
Go to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80
Open Web.Config
Change
<SafeMode MaxControls=”200″ CallStack=”false”
to
<SafeMode MaxControls=”200″ CallStack=”true”
Turn off custom errors
<customErrors mode=”Off”/>
I know that is an old question but for me the fix was to stop and start again the SharePoint Web Application from IIS.

I'm trying to build a Web Deploy package via msbuild on a new machine and it's not working. It builds fine on other machines, but here I get the following vague error:

I'm not sure what 'redirection.config' is, and the line reference to the .targets file doesn't help at all.
How can I fix this?
redirection.config is a file that lives in the IIS configuration directory, typically %SystemRoot%\System32\inetsrv\config. Here are two possibilities:
The account building your project doesn't have access to the IIS config dir. This might happen if you have an automated build identity with special permissions, or you if you need to start Visual Studio as an administrator.
You don't have IIS installed at all on the new machine. Check to be sure the IIS config directory, and redirection.config in particular, even exist. If not, you'll need to install IIS.
If you receive this error when deploying with Release Managment (via IISConfig.exe) be sure that the deployment agent service account is in the local Administrators group. You may need to restart the deployment agent service.

Insufficient Permissions Problems with MSDeploy and TFS Build 2010
For me, simply running visual studio as admin gave it the elevated permissions it needed to operate against this folder.
May work for others.
I got this error when I tried to use a relative path for the contentPath setting. I fixed it by settings the contentPath to the full path of the folder. Without the full path, the contentPath provider thinks it is a site path or application path and looks for it in in the IIS configuration.
This error just appeared to me when my C# project was referencing the Microsoft.Web.Administration, Version=7.9.0.0 assembly. It looks like this assembly only works with IIS Express. For IIS, we must use Microsoft.Web.Administration, Version=7.0.0.0.
After hours of testing and troubleshooting this problem turned out to be an issue with the users profile.
This was found by logging in as myself and I didn't receive the same issue.
To fix this issue:
Log into the machine as an administrator and delete the contents of the corrupt profile from C:\Users (or rename the folder to username.OLD)
Open up the registry and navigate here – HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ProfileList
Find the corrupt profile and rename this to .OLD or remove it.

As this is high in search engines when looking for this error, I'll post my solution.
I used Azure Pipelines to release the app to IIS and had this error. My issue was that I mistakenly used Build Agent job instead of Deployment Group job when configuring the release pipeline.
On server 2012 this error can be caused by UAC which needs to be disabled via the registry.

I have a deployed a web application in IIS. Which used to work without any issues. Recently i have shifted that web application to another machine, Here is the problem. Once i setup the Webapplication when i opened the default document in IIS im getting the File not found error as following

I have no clue why the IIS is not able to find the web.config. The file is present in the path C:\inetpub\wwwroot\application\web.config but the IIS is looking in the path \?\C:....
Please let me know how to resolve this??

Now from personal experience I encountered this error after setting up a new development machine. What I had forgotten to do was install the Url Rewrite 2.0 IIS module. Sadly the IIS error gives absolutely no idea that this is the actually issue.
Therefore to solve this issue investigate the system.webServer setting in our web.config and ensure that you have installed all the iis modules that you use. I did this by systematically removing elements from my web.config until I came across the cause.

I know it's old post but I resolved the same issue as follows:
If you are using TFS and you are getting this problem then Reason is ".vs" file is not excluded from commit.
Because of that ".vs\config\applicationhost.config" gets the local version of another user/Developer.
To Solve the error, First open that file Update Physical path inside "" xml tag.
Also ask user to exclude this folder from TFS to prevent future issues.

I try to add a new web application in sharepoint central administration and get the following error message:
Failed to apply web.config modifications to file 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\9675\web.config'.
Failed to apply a web.config modification to file 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\9675\web.config'. The specified node "configuration/system.webserver/modules" was not found in the web.config file
The same error appears when trying to run any Shell-Command that changes something in the web.config. I already tried to do a repair-installation of sharepoint with no afford.
Any idea what could cause this error?
If you want the quickest solution and the problem is happening on a testing web application just delete it and re-create it again. The new web application should have a clean web.config and you cana play again.
Otherwise you could be cleaning the web.config file manually and checking if your changes would help or not.
Also, make sure that you do not change web application root directory by editing settings in IIS. After doing thit SP runs fine but you'll get into trouble when maitaining features and solutions. SharePoint has this value in the database; you'd have to synchronize it with IIS using its object model.
I'm trying to deploy a winform application with IIS and ClickOnce. I can access the publish.htm page and the install even starts when I click on the provided link.
However I get this error during the installation process:
Downloading http://MyWebSiteUrl/.../Interop.SHDocVw.dll did not succceed.
The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.
Can anybody help me out on this ?

I found out that I needed to check "use .deploy file extension" (under properties>Publish>Options>Deployment
[Answering this old question because it comes up as the best match in my case and the accepted answer was of no use to me].
Background, in an IIS hosted ClickOnce scenario, the downloadable components are itemized in a manifest file at the root of the deployment (that's how you can specify a single download link and deploy all the supporting components).
I was converting a tested application from a WiX installation to a lightweight version with ClickOnce and received the HTTP 500 error without anything else in the logs. Naturally, I failed to think it through and instead found myself getting dragged down the rabbit hole on the internets, with instructions for detailed logging, magic spells, etc.
Upon more sober reflection, the problem was simple and I should have been able to tell immediately from the IIS log: a 500 followed by a 0 is shorthand for 'you're an idiot, the content isn't where you said it was' and it had almost nothing to do with ClickOnce.
I had copy/paste/edited an existing download link template in MVC that was in use for simple apps and it happened to cater to only two levels of subfolders in the manifest. When I ported a more complex project structure, I ended up leaving items in a Resources sub-sub-subfolder that looked fine in the manifest but the path was being truncated in MVC so that the related item could not be found.
Moral of the story - if you get a 500 error always check first to make sure your non-functioning appliance is plugged into a working outlet...
I remembered that there is a log file that you can check for Sharepoint Services 3.0. I don't remember where I can find this. The reason I ask this I have an error when implementing the new template and it works on one, but not on the other machine. The error on the page is very generic: "The template you have choosen is invalid or can not be found".

SharePoint log files are usually in the "Logs" folder in the '12 Hive' which by default is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\Logs.
It's easier to have the error displayed completely. You can enable this by modifying the web.config.
Find the SafeMode entry in your web.config and change CallStack="false" to CallStack="true". Then find the customErrors entry and set mode to mode="Off".
Now errors will be shown as a complete ASP.NET error screen
