sharepoint document visiblity based on user contribution to library - sharepoint

We have a doc library, Requirement is that only the user who has contributed to the document should be able to see the document and other user who has access to the library should not see that.
Can you please help me to achieve this.
Update: I talked to my TL he said, we need multiple Views on the Doc Library. Any one with new Ideas?

Add a custom view to the document library that only displays the items if the current user == creator of the document.
Set this view as the default view.
Prohibit users from changing the view.
If you are after a true permission based solution, you could develop a event handler for the adding item handler that sets the permission on the newly created item.
(By breaking parent inheritance also)
Set only permissions (owner) for the user that created the item.
EDIT: Just re-read your question. I didn't understand correctly. I missed the "contribution" part. Anyway, I will let my answer be here.

Adding a view is not really good practice. If one want's to gain access to the data he can do so by working with the lists web service. the solution is much simpler then it seems.
1. you need to install this: http://spdactivities.codeplex.com/.
This add-on will add you work flow activities to the SP Designer.
2. create a workflow doing what you described. It will take you no more then 10 minutes.

Xpages: Track changes when user updates document from Xpage

A business owner of my ticket tracking app in Xpages wants to track every change to the document. If a user opens the doc in edit mode but doesn't change anything, then no tracking. If, however, they open up a document and change one field, I have to capture that.
Here is my solution. When a user edits a doc, I create a "shadow document", which is a "before" vision. When the user saves I am comparing field for field for changes, and then acting appropriately.
Is there a better way to do this?
This is another good use case for Java beans. If you create a bean which sits between XPages-UI and Domino back-end document then you can easily track field changes.

... and you could use the OpenNTF Domino API that has functions for exactly this. As far as I remember there is an example of this in the demo database. Not sure if it is also in the new version of the demo database - but then you may just need to find an older version (e.g. for milestone 4.5 where I saw this).

Display document only to user who uploaded it in sharepoint

I have a specific requirement where-in I want only the uploader of the document and a specific team to be able to view it in list / library. 1) is it possible? 2) If yes, how...?
Ok. So I was able to resolve my issue with the steps mentioned below. Soon will be documenting it in form of a blog and share it:
Created the document library and modified the default view to only show documents that were created by/modified by [Me].
Added a new web page to the library and gave exclusive rights to access that to a certain set of users.
Restricted all users from creating a view with the help of creating special permission level where user only had access to upload or delete a document but not creating/updating/deleting lists/views. Also disabled private view creation.
Hope this may be helpful to others too who are looking for restricted views / disabling view creation.

#Ashish, in SharePoint 2007 GUI you cannot make a query that will show documents that belongs to a specific group, however CAML specification supports it (Membership tag), it wasn't documented until SP2010, but it works on SP2007 (i'm using it)
However this involves custom coding and this doesn't assign permissions automatically, it just enables you to filter documents by groups.
For a solution without custom coding you could consider making a seperate folder/list for every person/group and set permissions to folder/list accordingly. This will also help performance - it's better to have permissions set on high-level container than having fine grained permissions (i'm just assuming that, because i read everywhere that mass fine-grained permissions are bad for performance)
You may use current user filter web part to filter the document by whom logged in into the sharepoint site by passing the value Dispaly Name

Restricting Views of users on Sharepoint lists

I am developing a sharepoint 2010 project.
I want to restrict users view on lists based on their identity. (e.g. the branch of organization they work in, but in fact the ristrictions can be more complicated).
What solutions do you recommend?
With out of the box features this is not possible. You can go to great lengths to remove the list's view selectors and other navigational elements that let people cruise around a the schema and metadata for a list but it is not a security mechanism.
If a user has read permissions to an item, they'll have read access to all the fields of that item.
There is an outside chance that it you disabled all RPC mechanisms, SOAP, RESTful web services, Client Object Model and the office clients that you might be able to claim this as a security mechanism. If you don't there will always be a way around your "security" scheme.
This feature can't be implemented by SharePoint by now and I think neither for the next version
You can use a third part tool to achieve it, such as BoostSolutions' Column/View Permission or LightningTools' DeliverPoint

Not 100% sure on SharePoint 2010, but definitley for SharePoint 2007, there is not a way to do this, especially if the views are corresponding to security requirements on the columns users are able to see.
One way to work around this is have the list be not accessible by users, and then have code logic allow for access to the data creating the different "views" on the data in something like a Web Part. The downsides to this is search becomes an issue (since the data is hidden) and having multiple "views" of the data (if necessary) is also another item to work through.

I find it easier, if possible, to create the view and lock it with the filters on the list settings page.
For example, I have a list of employees that includes their employee IDs. I use that list on other pages to gather data in other webparts. So I filter the employee list to [ME]. So the data is available to the page needing it to filter others and they cannot see anything else.
Now, what about the person who needs to manage that page? I create a view, call it HR. That view can see everything. Then I export that webpart with that list view on it through the designer. I then delete the HR view from the employee list.
This leaves no way for anyone to switch views and see everything again. I create a webpart page for the person who manages it, and I upload that webpart and set the view of the webpart to HR. In the end, I have a page that I lock down instead of trying to lock down views or list permissions separately.
Would you be able to have two lists that are joined. One that all users have access to and another that only certain people have access to, and then join them? Then maybe the people that don't have access to the other table it doesn't pull the information? Not sure, but I'll try that out later today.

Disallow item addition in a List or Doc lib

How can I disallow adding item or document to a list or document library? Due to some other feature scenario I cannot break role inheritance and have custom permission set for the list. Today, we restrict the addition using event handler (Item adding) – but this leads to poor UX.
Is there a way to have Role inheritance for a list and still have a base permission mask? Something like, allow everything that parent web offers but not X,Y,Z. Breaking role inheritance in the traditional way introduces the problem of explicit User and role management. Having a SPGoup hold an another SPGoup could help here, but that too is not possible. Let me know your suggestions.
I think you are asking to allow a user to have add permissions to the list but not actually be allowed to add to the list. Event receiver is going to be the best way. The only other solution I can think of is to use a custom item form that will do the check.
You can solve your problem by creating a webpart with the below functionality.
Identify the logged user is in admin group. If he is not in that group ganarte a javascript alert that "you have no permission for add new item" and redirect to (location.href="") allitems.aspx page.
And place this webpart in Newform.aspx page.
(add &toolpaneview=2&sharedview=true in in Newform.aspx url for editing page)

Create an IHTTPModule and subclass the context AuthenticateRequest event.
In the AuthenticateRequest routine you can inspect what type of action is happening and then redirect the user to the SharePoint "Access Denied" page. This is exactly how SharePoint does this functionality so the UX experiance would be the same.
If you want my opinion I would go with the way SharePoint handles permissions out of the box and break role inheritiance. Sure it will add new complexities to your life. But, I think you can better manage these complexities with the SharePoint Admin Toolkit and some custom built utilities for managing permissions. I think that is a better solution than what you are trying to do.
Am I missing something here when I suggest: Just hide the toolbar (or specific button) in the view page? That's an painless CSS hook done in the view page or SharePoint Designer
If you are using a custom List Template, you could create a custom View Toolbar Template. However, you probably will not want to use this on an OOTB List Template and it doesn't look like this will work on an existing list.
Even if you implement this, I would still leave the Event Receiver in place in order to prevent URL spoofing.

Edit only owned list items in Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0

Is there a way to limit the "edit item" permission in WSS 3.0 to only allow a user to edit his own documents or list items? We need the ability for a user to edit only documents/list items he creates - NOT items that someone else created. So, essentially we need a sub-set of the EDIT permission as well as ADD.
Is this possible in Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0? Is there a way to create custom permissions in code or a feature?
WSS has a basic UI for setting item-level permission on list items, but they hide that from the UI for document libraries. If you go into Settings->List Settings->Avanced settings for a list, you'll see the options to do pretty much what you're asking for. However, on document libraries, that UI is not available. The settings it drives, though are avaiable via the object model.
You could set those same properties for a document library like this:
SPDocumentLibrary onlyOwnLib = theWeb.Lists["DocLibName"]
onlyOwnLib.WriteSecurity = 2;
onlyOwnLib.Update();
And that should about do it. However, apparently that doesn't really set permissions; it just controls what the user can do via the UI. If they had another interface to the library (like via WebDAV) or list (like via the web services), it wouldn't prevent them from editing items they didn't create. If you want true item-level permissions, I think you need to go the event handler route.
This post from Matt Morse explains it in more detail, and he even wrote a command line tool to set the property (plus the .ReadSecurity property) for lists and libraries.
If you added an event handler to the document list you should be able to limit edit rights on that item to the user that created the item.
I often have to copy documents from another system into a list in SharePoint, and in that case the edit rights will be assigned to the system user that transfered the document, unless you use the approach suggested by Kirk Liemohn here
Note that item level permissions on large numbers of documents increase the load on your SQL server quite a lot.

This is an old question, however the problem still exists.
A way that has worked well for me in the past is to use a workflow to configure the permissions when the library item is added.

I believe that permissions like that can be created through the user interface. It depends on the scale and number of list items you have, but you could do one of two things. First (without having to create scripts) you could give everyone a custom "Read" permission access which would not allow them to do everything you can in in the Read permission but allow them to Add Items. Then on an item-by-item basis, click the item -> manage permissions -> (Give the specific user Contribute permissions on their document).
If you're creating a SharePoint list that this will not be practical, you can create a script to traverse through all items, and will verify the user has contribute permissions (otherwise it will set the contribute permission to that user).
Additionally, you could just give each person their own folder.
Give everyone read permissions on the SharePoint list/document library, but give each person full control privileges over their own folder. This will allow everyone to read everything in a list, but create/edit their own documents.
If you want the 'Only their own' permission on a document library, it isn't there out of the box. But I've created a solution at CodePlex that adds this for Document Libraries - check it out at http://moresharepoint.codeplex.com.
