I am a .NET programmer who needs to port one good Desktop OTP system already at work to be used into cell phones. As far I know J2ME is the correct answer to do it. I'll appreciate any good advice about IDE, first steps, books or any other information.
Well, Eclipse IDE have good J2ME support, or so I've heard.

You'll have to figure out which device you want to target, and grab its emulator.
Then, proceed making a hello world app with the aid of tutorials.
I would give NetBeans a try as well. Eclipse and NetBeans are very similar, but the differences can be night and day depending on your personal preferences. NetBeans also has great J2ME project support, and it is plug and play for any emulator of a device you may need to target, though I recommend sticking to the default or SonyEricsson's. Motorola's was always buggy and never reflected the device at all, and Nokia's was always sloooow.
Also, there are a ton of devices out there. Before you jump head first into this you should define a scope of exactly which devices you will need to target. This will have a huge impact on scheduling as porting is no small task.
Finally, just get your hands on the actual devices you need to target. Emulator is a good way to start, but there are always so many nuances and problems that pop up once you throw the app on the device that it's best to have your target devices from day one.

So in linux there are all kinds of menus and application launchers, but no one of them suits my needs.
Please, let me explain you what I want to do.
I student in a school now so we have fancy dreams and all those never getting involved ideas, but luckily I try to realize some of them.
I want to build an open source gaming platform, a video game console with a linux distro that is based on debian stable liquorix kernel and all that kind of stuff, but it needs its custom DE and something different from the PC interface as it will be controlled by a gamepad and will be a video game console, people must think it is not like a PC, people must see the cool interface and kind of realize that it is different.
The problem is:
All applications menus from other Desktop environments are a bit too windows-like which does not provide a video game console experience.
What do I need for that? How can I read a source code from other applications menus? How can I make something rounded in xorg, as I want to make it a cs:go-like rounded menu (CS GO is just for a reference, I don't play that!)?
I acquired a batch of WT0490 wearable pdas with detachable scan head, so converted an application originally made for Windows Mobile (which has been running perfectly for several years) to run on the WT4090s. The devices use these versions:
Windows CE 5.0
EMDK 2.6
ASP.net CF 2.0
Since rollout I've seen some very frustrating behaviour, which seems to start happening after the devices have been operating a few days. Users are reporting the following error:
Unexpected error in application
SCAN_Enable
There doesnt seem to be any noticeable pattern, several devices will be working perfectly for a few days then suddenly this error will show. THen a few days and a few reboots later they work again.
All devices were taken right back to stock settings then our cabs deployed to them. All identical models. We've tried altering memory allocation, swapping scanner headers etc but there is no pattern.
The error seems to occur on load of the first form after login, the login screen displays a list of users in a dropdown with a password box so that part of the app works ok, it seems to be when the scanner is initialised that this failure happens.
I had 40 devices, now 30+ have gone down with this same issue so my gut is telling me its a software issue but as yet ive not been able to find out why.
We've tried warm boots, cold boots, complete reprovisionings as well. We have a couple of dev units that don't show the problem although they are not in regular use so maybe we just haven't seen the problem 'yet'.
I hope someone out there has had this issue and knows how to fix it.

WT4090 was built by Motorola Solution enterprise business, now part of Zebra Technologies. The WT4090 is currently in EOS (End Of Sales) but is still supported by Zebra if you've a maintenance contract.
You can check if you've the latest OS version and fixes installed on the device looking on Zebra Technologies support website.
For question on how to develop for Zebra Technologies devices you can take a look at Launchpad, Zebra's developer community website.
It's Worth noting that these devices have detachable barcode scanners - so if the scanner is not correctly attached, you get a SCAN_Enable error.
If you don't release the scanner, you can also see this error as a previous form could have the scanner blocked.
You may also find you have the ScanWedge app running - this will also block the scanner so you cannot get it enabled. The EMDK needs exclusive access to the scanner to enable it.
Is there a (open source or commercial) software solution available for the Linux platform to build a custom embedded navigation device? It should be able to display maps and do routing (just like a TomTom/Navigon/Garmin/... navi device).
Unfortunately all navigation solutions seem to target Windows CE only.
Something based on OpenStreeMap data is not an option, because the map data is IMHO not always good enough for serious routing / driving instructions.
Since I'm searching for a long time now without luck I'm not too restrictive on the implementation details, however it should be possible to extend the software with custom functions or ideally embed the navigation in my own software.
Android with Google Maps comes to my mind, but I'd like to avoid setting up Android for my device.
Alternatively, if there is no such solution, I might use a end-user navigation device if that allows me some kind of communication with my own device to control it.

I wanna to simulate touch event in Windows / Mac OS X or Linux (OS is not critical).
Under Windows Vista and Windows 7, the Multi-Touch Vista drivers let you use 2 mice to simulate multi-touch gestures. It should degrade nicely to the "normal" touch experience. In my experience, it can be fairly tricky, but it works.
It really kind of depends on what you're working on and what the goal is. If you can separate the response from the action in your application, that will make it a lot easier to test something like this without going through a lot of hassle.
If you wind up needing a touch device, Wikipedia has a nice list of multi-touch devices.
A lot of time passed since this question, however, maybe someone will google for similar question and find that there is another option:

I'm looking for options to replace and old application running in a Psion Workabout mx handheld, developed in OPL.
The handheld and the application (developed more than 10 years ago) are both working fine
by now, but the device is discontinued, and each time is harder to find replacement parts for it.
Then I started to look to the newer Psion handheld models, but they are expensive and
filled with features that I don't need at all (color screen, barcode reader, ...). Also,
they look a lot less rugged than the actual Workabout mx that I'm using. I had to replace
around 50 handhelds, and i'm looking for good options with this features:
Reasonable priced
Fast numeric data entry, optionally alphanumeric data (not usual)
Readable screen, with at least 7 lines of text visible. No color needed
Rugged
Replacement parts available
Reasonable development environment (handheld emulator, IDE, minimal GUI support, PC / handheld connectivity)
Maybe an old mobile phone with Java support can do the work?
Please indicate the suggested device model and the development options available for it.

Perhaps a compaq ipaqs may be suitable replacements, but I'm not sure they make those anymore.
I was also thinking an iPod iTouch (serious suggestion!) may be a good device to get (cheapest version £165) Its a good development environment (Objective-C, free compiler download, although you'll probably have to register with apple to get your apps. a certificate so it works on the device). This may be too expensive, and far above the requirements you're looking for.
If you're thinking about java enabled phones (I'm not sure what you're performance requirements are, but sounds quite minimal if its a port of a 10 year old app) you want to be careful, some mobile java implementations won't support floating point arithmetic directly, you may have to implement a fixed point math library. Somes phone Java VMs vary quite dramatically performance wise too, again this may not be your primary concern. The mobile phone development route may be a valid one, if you're assuming that your off-site engineers all have company phones anyway!
