I'm using homebrew to install a few REPLs. I already succeeded with Ruby/irb, but now, when I try to install the javascript REPL with brew install node I get an error message. Then when I try to run node in terminal, I get the -bash: node: command not found.
I've tried searching for the relevant versions of nodejs for High Sierra, hoping I'd find which version worked with that specific OS, but no luck. I did find that I can input brew search node to get a list of available node versions, but I still don't know which one, and I don't want to make a serious mistake and fudge my system. Does anyone have a solution/suggestion?

I am using npm after installing nodejs.
I have installed it once before and I just finished deleting all the components because it kept giving the error in the image below, but when I try to use npm, I keep getting errors saying.
The system cannot find the path specified.
Even though I reinstalled node, it still gives these weird errors where it says the error twice on powershell and once on cmd.
I'm so confused :(
In case you are using nvm to manage your node versions. You can just change your node version and it should work. This solution worked for me.
Check the current nvm version by using the command nvm current.
If that is not the version which you currently installed or updated, use the command nvm use <new_version>
for example: nvm use 16.17.0
I tried updating to v12.5. I was using node version 8 before this. When I installed node v12.5 npm stopped working.
Whenever i try installing any package with npm. It shows this error.
I tried deleting node through different sources. But, it did not work.
I also tried reading different articles like these
https://tecadmin.net/install-latest-nodejs-npm-on-ubuntu/
https://websiteforstudents.com/install-the-latest-node-js-and-nmp-packages-on-ubuntu-16-04-18-04-lts/
https://www.rosehosting.com/blog/how-to-install-node-js-on-ubuntu-16-04/
I almost tried all the sources available on web.
I tried
sudo apt purge node
sudo apt autoremove
and some similar commands. But, it did not work.
Whenever i type node -v. it still shows me 12.5
and when i type npm -v. it shows me 5.5.1.
How do i either remove node completely?
or
install specific version of node?
or upgrade npm to version 8.x
How do I solve the problem?
I cannot even install anything, it shows this error even after installing some other packages.
how do i solve it?
EDIT:
I found the solution...
its basically using nvm to install different versions of node in your machine.
and setting default version for your machine using nvm
Trying to install firebase on the command line, can't do it because I probably need to change npm permissions. Problem is, when I run "npm get prefix" it comes back with "command not found". I know I have node.js, npm, git and bower installed, but I am very new to the command line and can't find anything online that references this. Can anyone help? Using Mac OSX.
I should specify what was going on here: I tried re-installing node.js a few times and it didn't work. I was re-installing the most recent version and for some reason my terminal didn't see it. The problem was fixed when I installed the LTS (Long Term Support) version.
Using the newest node.js installer from https://nodejs.org, I run into the same error every time when it reaches the npm installation. npm 3.x was supposed to deal with this issue, but apparently it doesn't help the node.js installer. The node developers have essentially refused to do anything about it, as this problem has been around for about two years already. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a work around. How can I get this to install?
I also had this error, trying to install node-v8.10.0-x64.msi on Windows 10.
My solution (to getting it to install; no idea if it won't break further down the line) was changing the install directory from C:/Program Files/nodejs to C:/njs/ (2nd step of current setup process).
I'm surprised those characters made the difference, and that there even is a Windows node release if there's not a proper solution to this (can't believe that maximum path length on Windows isn't modifiable), but this has seemingly worked for me.
I don't think its an installer error, actually windows is restricting the path size to be 150 char.
try reducing the file path name by copying it into direct c or d drive.

I've used Choco
It works together with NVM 4 Win.
After once installing node with choco install nodejs
then I install other versions of node using NVM e.g. nvm install 6.9.0
following by choosing that version with nvm use 6.9.0
and then verify with nvm list
and node -v.
I also need to install the latest version installed by choco using nvm install 10.1.0
I'm having problem's when trying to run my gulp command in the terminal. I've been trying to track down the issue and from what I can tell the issue is that I'm running an outdated version of node.
node -v tells me that I am on v0.10.46, but the Node install downloaded from the website says it's currently on v4.4.7.
The first issue I had was with es6 promises, but I managed to install the es6-polyfill which solved the issue.
Now gulp is throwing an error related to /node_modules/gulp-imagemin/index.js. Specifically the use of const variables. (const path = require('path')).
Based on this thread: https://github.com/sindresorhus/gulp-imagemin/issues/181#issuecomment-219303510 - this issue seems to be an outdated version of node, but no matter what I do it won't upgrade!
I've explored all possible avenues for upgrading Node - using npm, nvm, n, brew and even a local re-install, but everytime it seems to be installing an outdated version.
I've explored the possibility that I'm installing a 32bit version on a 64bit system, but that doesn't seem to be the issue either.
I have absolutely no idea how to progress fixing this issue. I'm trying to build a wordpress website, and no matter what theme I use this error comes back to haunt me!
Help!
EDIT:
Just to add.. in this image (http://imgur.com/a/OzR5Y) you can see the output of me trying to upgrade using N, and then following the David Walsh upgrading method.
I had the same problem and I tried everything from uninstalling it by this instructions without any result. But maybe you have in your computer a management like nvm installed, just try this:
which node
And then if the respond of that is something like:
/Users/MYUSER/.nvm/v0.10.46/bin/node
That's the problem, so you can solve this by uninstalling nvm and then install Node.js normally or just keep using nvm
