pyspark tasks stuck on Airflow and Spark Standalone Cluster with Docker-compose - apache-spark

I setup Airflow and Spark standalone cluster on docker-compose.
Airflow run spark-submit tasks via spark client mode, which are submitted directly to spark master. However when I execute spark-submit task, the task got stuck.
Spark-submit Command:

All containers airflow-scheduler, airflow-webserver, spark-master, spark-worker-n connected to same external network.
spark-driver is installed under airflow containers (scheduler, webserver), because corresponding dags and tasks are executed by airflow-scheduler.
UPDATE
After replacing driver spark version to match the master's one 3.2.0, the issue get disappeared. So it means, that in my particular case the issue was not due to connectivity between different spark actors (driver, master, worker/executor), but due to version mismatch. For some reason spark workers does not log corresponding error, which is misleading.

Most of the threads was pointing to connectivity issues. However in my case issue was due to mismatch of spark's driver vs master/worker version.
After replacing driver spark version to match the master's one 3.2.0, as well as ensure the same python version both on driver and executor sides (3.9.10) the issue get disappeared. So it means, that in my particular case the issue was not due to connectivity between different spark actors (driver, master, worker/executor), but due to version mismatch. WARN - Running Spark Locally with Docker - Initial job has not accepted any resources

I launched Spark master and worker in my laptop using Docker bridge network spark
docker network create spark
I put the following command

Property spark.yarn.jars - how to deal with it?

My knowledge with Spark is limited and you would sense it after reading this question. I have just one node and spark, hadoop and yarn are installed on it.
I was able to code and run word-count problem in cluster mode by below command

It works just fine.
Now I understood that 'spark on yarn' requires spark jar files available on the cluster and if I don't do anything then every time I run my program it will copy hundreds of jar files from $SPARK_HOME to each node (in my case it's just one node). I see that code's execution pauses for some time before it finishes copying. See below -

Spark's documentation suggests to set spark.yarn.jars property to avoid this copying. So I set below below property in spark-defaults.conf file.

To make Spark runtime jars accessible from YARN side, you can specify spark.yarn.archive or spark.yarn.jars. For details please refer to Spark Properties. If neither spark.yarn.archive nor spark.yarn.jars is specified, Spark will create a zip file with all jars under $SPARK_HOME/jars and upload it to the distributed cache.
Btw, I have all the jar files from LOCAL /opt/spark/jars to HDFS /user/spark/share/lib. They are 206 in number.
This makes my jar failed. Below is the error -

I understand the error that ApplicationMaster class is not found but my question is why it is not found - where this class is supposed to be? I don't have assembly jar since I'm using spark 2.0.1 where there is no assembly comes bundled.
What this has to do with spark.yarn.jars property? This property is to help spark run on yarn, and that should be it. What additional I need to do when using spark.yarn.jars?

You could also use the spark.yarn.archive option and set that to the location of an archive (you create) containing all the JARs in the $SPARK_HOME/jars/ folder, at the root level of the archive. For example:
Create the archive: jar cv0f spark-libs.jar -C $SPARK_HOME/jars/ .
Upload to HDFS: hdfs dfs -put spark-libs.jar /some/path/.
2a. For a large cluster, increase the replication count of the Spark archive so that you reduce the amount of times a NodeManager will do a remote copy. hdfs dfs –setrep -w 10 hdfs:///some/path/spark-libs.jar (Change the amount of replicas proportional to the number of total NodeManagers)
Set spark.yarn.archive to hdfs:///some/path/spark-libs.jar
I was finally able to make sense of this property. I found by hit-n-trial that correct syntax of this property is
spark.yarn.jars=hdfs://xx:9000/user/spark/share/lib/*.jar
I didn't put *.jar in the end and my path was just ended with /lib. I tried putting actual assembly jar like this - spark.yarn.jars=hdfs://sanjeevd.brickred:9000/user/spark/share/lib/spark-yarn_2.11-2.0.1.jar but no luck. All it said that unable to load ApplicationMaster.

If you look at spark.yarn.jars documentation it says the following
List of libraries containing Spark code to distribute to YARN containers. By default, Spark on YARN will use Spark jars installed locally, but the Spark jars can also be in a world-readable location on HDFS. This allows YARN to cache it on nodes so that it doesn't need to be distributed each time an application runs. To point to jars on HDFS, for example, set this configuration to hdfs:///some/path. Globs are allowed.
This means that you are actually overriding the SPARK_HOME/jars and telling yarn to pick up all the jars required for the application run from your path,If you set spark.yarn.jars property, all the dependent jars for spark to run should be present in this path, If you go and look inside spark-assembly.jar present in SPARK_HOME/lib , org.apache.spark.deploy.yarn.ApplicationMaster class is present, so make sure that all the spark dependencies are present in the HDFS path that you specify as spark.yarn.jars.

Spark not doing any work on slave: Initial job has not accepted any resources

I am trying to do a very simple setup with Spark using SSH tunneling and I can't make it work.
I have master running on my PC, with this setup ./sbin/start-master.sh -h localhost -p 7077 (if not stated otherwise, everything else is default).
On my slave PC (IP is 192.168.0.222), which is in other domain and I don't have a root access to it, I made ssh -N -L localhost:7078:localhost:7077 myMasterPCSSHalias and run slave with ./sbin/start-slave.sh spark://localhost:7078. I can now see this slave on the dashboard at http://localhost:8080/ in my browser. I see that it has 14GB of free memory.
When I then try e.g. this example:
./bin/spark-submit --master spark://localhost:7077 examples/src/main/python/pi.py 10
it hangs on this message until I kill it (you can see the full log message below):

I am sure I am not using more resources than I have available, the problem still persists even though I use --executor-memory 512m and running executor is just signalling RUNNING state. The only thing in error log is this:

Since you checked that you have the resources, the next most likely problem is that the executor cannot connect back to the driver. When submitting a job, the driver starts a server that the executor will connect to in order to download the jar(s).
Yes, the error message (Initial job has not accepted any resources...) does not look related to network problem. This is a known issue discussed for example here:
https://github.com/databricks/spark-knowledgebase/issues/9
It's probably related to the network (security groups rules). It's a silly test, but I just made it work by opening master and workers to all TCP traffic (inbound/outbound).

Can't spark-submit to analytics node on DataStax Enterprise

I have a 6 node cluster, one of those is spark enabled.
I also have a spark job that I would like to submit to the cluster / that node, so I enter the following command
spark-submit --class VDQConsumer --master spark://node-public-ip:7077 target/scala-2.10/vdq-consumer-assembly-1.0.jar
it launches the spark ui on that node, but eventually gets here:

set the ip of the mesos master on a slave

I have three mesos slave nodes and one master on 10.14.56.157, 10.14.56.159 and 10.14.56.160 and 10.14.56.156 respectively. The names of the machines are worker1, worker2, worker3 and master.
I managed to set up the mesos cluster correctly (I believe). The web UI on 10.0.0.4:5050 shows all the three slaves. Then I'm running a spark shell on the cluster. Everything initially works fine: shell starts, UI shows a new framework started etc. Then I'm trying to run a simple test:
val numbers = sc.parallelize(1 to 1000000, 1000)
which works fine and then
numbers.count
Of course this is when spark actually does some work. So it starts the tasks, sends it to slaves (I can see it in the logs) but then none of the tasks completes (status: LOST). Spark retries the tasks up to 4 times and eventually gives up. I looked into the logs on the slave machines (the sandbox link in the UI) and I get the following output:

It seems to me that the slave cannot resolve the name master to the master's IP. Is that correct? If so how to change it to the actual IP. If not, how to fix it? Thanks!
What happens if you type ping master on one of the slave machines? If that fails, that's your problem, and you could fix it by adding a line to each slave's /etc/hosts file pointing master to the correct IP.
You could also try setting spark.driver.host to its IP when launching the spark driver, to change what "host" it advertises itself as.
