I'm attempting to categorize, tag, and database a collection of over six terabytes of video clips and game recordings from my extensive playtime in Battlefield 4, and in an attempt to make that as efficient as possible, I've inserted hyperlinks to the files on my hard drive into the spreadsheet, such that I can single click, and the video will begin playing in VLC.
However, as I've got over 10,000 files to tag and work through (I know, it's kind of absurd), I wanted to improve the process a bit by making the spreadsheet automatically "click" the hyperlink once I advanced to the next row.
I've got a number of columns for common categories that I'll probably use, and essentially I want to enter the series of tags for the given video file, hit enter, and the next video file in the list will begin playing in VLC, without me even switching windows, clicking, or anything.
I'm pretty new to Excel, but this project is essentially a way for me to learn and grow in my knowledge.
Bonus question: is there a better way for doing filter-as-you-type than the various tutorials such as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCahRfEGj1g?
This method is unfortunately not efficient for large lists, so I'm hoping there's a better way to do it. Thanks!

I will like to create a visual representation, like a bird view, of how we distribute our inventory in the dock. I have attach a photo to see what data I am working with and what I want to create, in a simplified way.
1st you scan the location of the buffer ("Mx1", "Mx2"..etc), then you scan all of the pallets in that location, up to 10, automatically gets the appointment tracker ("12345ABC", "12345XYZ"). Based on this tracker it will assign a colour code to each different one to be able to differentiate them visually.
Then it will transfer this information to the visual buffers. Not every buffer needs to be complete and different trackers can be in the same. See photo to comprehend better.
I think a macro is not necessary, but what formulas will you use in order to create this? Specially to move the data to the buffers.
Thanks a lot!
I have tried excel formulas, but I cannot move the information correctly to the buffers
I have 500 Excel documents. I want users to keep working as if that was excel (I'll provide app for that) yet cross-reference data in-between that documents. What database can feet such needs?
So, if i get it ok then you need to get data from ~500 excel files while people may access and change them in real time! I can think of 4 ways of approach:
live links of all files to 1 workbook... hurts me to even think the maintenance and setting ... but it will be "live".
powerQuery: group them all in one data table using PowerQueries or PowerBI or similar, then load them on workbook OR save as csv... 1 button refresh, relatively quick, no actual coding needed
use VBA: access all files (or changed ones...) and get what you want, when you want it. If implemented expertly will only take a few seconds for full scan in modern pc, yet needs someone good at coding VBA.
setup 1) using VBA instead of manually, then using VBA to check for errors etc. Result will be "live" but requires again serious VBA coding...
I believe that 2) is the easiest choice with good maintenance features, ease of setting and good speed... (start in excel ...Data / new Query/from File/from Folder ...)
I have recently observed an issue regarding my data in a column that I use to perform data validation on my spreadsheet.
So There is nothing wrong with the formula, neither is there anything from with the use of data validation.
It should be looking for duplicate entries, which works quite fine.
The issue is that it no longer recognizes input made from a smartphone using the excel app.
so what i did was to retype cell text field from my PC and it worked perfectly.
Is there a way that I can continue using this technique (Data validation) without having to re-enter data from a PC in order for it to process?
Certainly! Yes, that is possible.
But... with all the possibilities in today's world, is your current strategy the one that is the best for you?
That is something I cannot answer for you.
That is something I cannot enumerate for you.
But... There is something that I can introduce to you.
PowerQuery
PowerQuery was a free add-on for Excel 2010 and 2013 and it has been baked directly into Excel for more than half a decade. So, if you're using the mobile app then you probably have a modern version of Excel with PowerQuery right at your finger tips.
Your first step if to determine how you want to make your data available for Excel to get. Go to the Data Tab on the ribbon and review your options in the "Get Extetnal Data" group.
It doesn't matter if free data is your Creed and your most intimate moments are publicly available through your raw data feed. Or if paranoia is the reason why you constantly drive around the block scraping SSIDs before squirreling them away to SQL server for detailed analysis. Or if you're using a USB cable to transfer photos to your PC because your mom walked in on you without knocking and was so disgusted by what she saw on your desktop that you're banned from the family LAN... For life. None of that matters because Excel can connect to your data in so many ways that one of them will be perfect for you.
There is a sense of familiarity when Importing your data into PowerQuery. It's not unlike following those timeless MS Wizards; but nothing like the uncanny sensation of being dropped into the PowerQuery editor. It is simultaneously the same as Excel and different from Excel and it may be the closest you ever come to visiting a parallel universe. Many of the same tools are available but they behave just slightly differently. And in some cases, like the Text To Columns tool, it is light years ahead of Excel and you will find yourself cursing at MS for not using it as a replacement for the old tool.
When you're done transforming your data, you'll have a tight clean table. But the real prize, is that you have fully automated pipe from source to product .
I figured that the phone user included extra spaces when inputting the data.
So i Used the TRIM() function which takes care of the extra spaces between, before, or after each word, and that did the job.
Therefore the major error was that there were additional spaces that was not recognized in the tested data.
I'm doing research for a project that's about to start.
We will be supplied hundreds of 30 second video files that the end user can select (via various filters) we then want to play them as if it was one video.
It seems that Media Source Extensions with MPEG-DASH is the way to go.
I feel like it could possibly be solve in the following way, but I'd like to ask if this sounds right from anyone who has done similar things
My theory:
Create mpd's for each video (via mp4box or similar tool)
User make selections (each of which has a mpd)
Read each mpd and get their <period> elements (most likely only one in each)
Create a new mpd file and insert all the <period> elements into it in order.
Caveats
I imagine this may be problematic if the videos were all different sizes formats etc, but in this case we can assume consistency.
So my question is to anyone with mpeg-dash / mpd exterience, does this sound right? or is there a better way to acheive this?
Sounds right, multi period is the only feasible way in my opinion.
Ideally you would encode all the videos with the same settings to provide the end user a consistent experience. However, it shouldn't be a problem if quality or even aspect ratio etc change from one period to another from a technical point of view. You'll need a player which supports multi period, such as dash.js or Bitmovin.
I would like to implement a GUI handling a huge number of rows and I need to use GTK in Linux.
I started having a look at GTKTreeView with lists but I don't think that adding millions of lines directly to that widget will help in having a GUI that doesn't slow the application.
Do you know whether there is a GTK widget already in place for this problem or do I have to handle my self the window frame that that must display those lines? Eventually I would write the data directly using GtkDrawingArea (essentially writing a new widget).
Any suggestion about any GTK topic or project I can look as starting point for my research?
As suggested in the comments, you can use the Cell Data Func, and get the displayed data under contro. But I have another idea: Millions of lines are much much more than any amount of information a human user can see and understand. So maybe a better, more usable and user-friendly solution, is to diaplay the data in a way the users can more easily navigate in it.
Imagine opening a huge hierarchy, scrolling down, and forgetting what were the top-level items you opened.
Example for a possible solution: Have a combo box which allows to choose some filter or category, and this can reduce the amount of data to a reasonable amount the user can more easily navigate and make a mental model of it if necessary.
NOTE: As far as I know, GtkTreeView doesn't support sorting/filtering and drag-n-drop at the same time, so if you want to use both features, I suggest you use the existing drag-n-drop functionality (otherwise very complicated to implement by hand) and implement your own sorting/filtering.
