How to use Fill Handle to copy same value in the same steps of row in Excel - excel

confuse wiht the Title
Well sorry my English doesn't look good
but I'll try to describe what I mean
Suppose I have this kind of values
0 A B C D F G H I J
1 20 =B1
2 10 =B3
3 30 =B5
4 8 =B7
5 9 =B9
6 4 etc.
7 79
8 67
9 63
10 45
as you seen above
I want to copy every value in cell B in two step down to cell D with Fill Handle
How can I do it ?
Any Formula I can use regarding this ?
Thanks before

In Cell D2 you can use the below formula, then drag down:
=INDEX(B:B,(ROWS($B$1:B1)*2)-1,1)

Please try:
=OFFSET(B1,ROW()-1,)

Formula reference holds for n cells in a row, then switches to new reference

I wonder if there's a quick solution to the following:
My goal is to divide a cell value by three, using the same value for three cells in a row, then switch to the next value in the series for another three cells in a row, and so on.
So my starting data would look like:
A B C D E
1 9 12 6 21 27
2 30 9 3 0 3
3 ...
I want the new cells to look like:
AA AB AC AD AE ...
1 3 3 3 4 4
2 10 10 10 3 3
...
Where the cell AA1 = A1/3, AB1 = A1/3, AC1 = A1/3, but AD1 = B1/3 and so on.
I need to do this for many observations, preferably using an excel formula.
Does anyone have any ideas on quick solutions?
Really appreciate your help.
Best,
Henry
Use INDEX:
=INDEX(1:1,0,ROUNDUP(COLUMN(A1)/3,0))/3

array based on max and less than?

I'm not sure if I'm over complicating this...
basically I'd like to have a formula which is
if the c column is less than 6, then look up the max value in B but display the value of C
so far I have this but I'd like it to show 2, not 437
{=MAX(IF(C2:C12<6,B2:B12, 0))}
any advice is appreciated. i'm shy, be nice..thanks
A B C
cat 110 3
dog 148 4
rooster 36 7
duck 32 8
pig 437 2
horse 44 6
eagle 215 5
dolphin 21 1
panda 2 9
iguana 257 10
fish 199 11
edit:
maybe something like
{=INDEX(C2:C12,MATCH(MAX(IF(C2:C12<6,C2:C12)),C2:C12,0))}
but I don't see where to put b2:b12
You really need two conditions
1) Column B is equal to =MAX(IF(C2:C12<6,B2:B12))
2) Column C is <6
so you can INDEX column C when those two are met, i.e.
=INDEX(C2:C12,MATCH(1,(B2:B12=MAX(IF(C2:C12<6,B2:B12)))*(C2:C12<6),0))
confirmed with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
{=IF(C2<6,INDEX($C$2:$C$12,MATCH(MAX($B$2:$B$12),$B$2:$B$12,0)),0)}
You were almost there..
Basically if C<6 , find max of B , lookup it in B:C and display corresponding C
{=IFERROR(VLOOKUP(MAX(IF(C2:C12<6,B2:B12, 0)),B2:C12,2,FALSE),0)}
Since your question doesn't clarify what if c>=6 I assume you don't want value.
Can answer more precisely if you clarify.
Mark this as answer if that's correct.
Hope this helps!
As I could see you requested a single INDEX formula:
{=INDEX($C$2:$C$12,MATCH(MAX(IF($C$2:$C$12<6,$B$2:$B$12,0),0),IF($C$2:$C$12<6,$B$2:$B$12,0),0))}
This is an array formula, hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter while still in the formula bar.
Lets break this down.
=INDEX(C:C, - Index column C as these are the values you want returned
MATCH(IF(C:C<6,B:B,0), - Find the largest value from the following array in the array and return it's relative position for INDEX()
IF(C:C<6,B:B,0),0)) - If the value in column c is less than 6 then add the column B value to the array, otherwise add 0

Need excel formula to prescribe which 6 of 8 cells to use for average

How can I prescribe which 6 of 8 cells excel uses to make an average?
e.g.:
A1 Art 86
A2 English 88
A3 Law 89
A4 Chemistry 83
A5 Biology 81
A6 Math 1 87
A7 Math 2 67
A8 PhysEd 72
e.g. Average 1 is A1:A6 / 6
e.g. Average 2 is [top 6 highest] / 6
e.g. Average 3 is Chemistry, English and the next top 4 highest / 6
I want to define the list where Average 1 = A1:A6/6, Average 2 = ?, Average 3 = ?
I assume the course descriptions are in column A and the scores are in column B and not Column A
B1:B6 =AVERAGE(B1:B6)
Top 6 =AVERAGE(LARGE(B1:B8,{1,2,3,4,5,6}))
Chemistry + English + top 4
=(SUM(SUMIF(A1:A8,{"Chemistry","English"},B1:B8))+SUM(LARGE((A1:A8<>"Chemistry")*(A1:A8<>"English")*B1:B8,{1,2,3,4})))/6
This last is an array formula and must be entered by holding down Ctrl + Shift while holding down Enter
A longer formula with the same result, but which can be normally entered:
=(SUM(AGGREGATE(14,4,((A1:A8="Chemistry")+(A1:A8="English"))*B1:B8,{1,2}))+SUM(AGGREGATE(14,4,(A1:A8<>"Chemistry")*(A1:A8<>"English")*B1:B8,{1,2,3,4})))/6
For #2, You can use Rank() to identify the top 6, then AverageIf() to average those <=6.
For #3, give Chem & English a value of 1, then use Rank() on the remaining 6 items. Then AverageIf() <=4. This is where it helps to put Chem & English at the top of the list.
Here's an example file showing this:

Anyway, that's ONE way to solve it... hope it helps!

Analysing data using the column name

I have the following data.
Z Y Z Z
A1 A2 A3 A4 Total
1 2 5 10 16
2 3 5 11 18
3 4 6 12 21
4 4 7 12 23
I want to sum the rows using Just Zs ( the name of columns). I have a big data set, so I want to write a function to find out Zs in the whole sheet and the then sum them (Total).
Any Help would be appreciated
This can be done with SUMIF():
=SUMIF($1:$1,"Z",2:2)
NOTE
With the above formula it is using full row references so DO NOT put "Z" on top of the total column or it will throw circular errors.
If you want to have "Z" above it then you need to define the ranges:
=SUMIF(A$1:D$1,"Z",A2:D2)
How does this work:
=Sum(If(A$1:D$1="Z",$A$2:$D$100))
Assuming your headers are in row 1, columns A to D, and your data starts in row 2, and goes to row 100.

"The formula refers to a range" error in Excel

Am new to Excel, please help me with this:
A B
2 9 =IF(A2:A6>=7,"1","0")
3 4
4 7
5 4
6 5
For B2 the formula works perfectly fine but in B3 it selects from A3:A6.
I know the concept of Absolute referencing. But here in this example it should basically work without any errors, right?
A B c
2 9 1 =Sum(A2:B2)
3 4 2
4 7 33
5 4 3
6 5 22
The above example works fine. What is the difference between two?
If you want the A2:A6 range to float down as you copy the formula to other rows, use:
=IF(MAX(A2:A6)>=7, 1, 0)
However, if you want row 6 locked as the finite terminator of the range then lock it as absolute with a $ like this,
=IF(MAX(A2:A$6)>=7, 1, 0)
