Removing Logic out of the view in EJS - node.js

Whilst prototyping something I quickly used some logic in my view to get it working (I've always thought this was a bad idea and it should not be done?). When I previously worked on Rails projects we could make use of view helpers, but working on a NodeJS/Express app I am unsure how to approach this.
I have this in my view for example
<% if (fixture.team_name == "Team 1" && fixture.team_stadium == "Stadium 1") { %>
<span class="label label-success">Team 1</span>
<% } %>
There will be a time when I would want a case statement to decide on what html to deliver but I won't want to put that in the view of course, just call a helper function maybe.
How is this done with Node/Express?

Is it possible to create a modularized reusable component in Umbraco 9?

I'm looking to create a reusable, modularized component in Umbraco 9. I've never worked with any Umbraco before. The example I'll use is a text widget/component that has an image on the left and text on the right, with the ability to set whether you want to swap this to be image right, text left.
I come from the Sitecore world where creating a component like this would mean creating a definition with the fields in the back office, creating an MVC controller and an action, and pointing that back office definition at the controller/action combo. Then, anywhere I've deemed a component hot spot, I can click an "add component" and it'd display the available components I've created (Text + Image Block, in our example).
Our team has been researching how to do something like this in Umbraco. We've been using element types. I've got it working where I can create a list of element types, but we couldn't figure out how to add a controller/action/view to this process to really control what gets displayed.
We've looked into the Grid Type Editor. That requires some Angular work that wasn't exactly playing nice, for some reason it was seeing our image fields as null even though they had an image.
We also tried messing with the Block List editor, and are currently investigating macros.
We've been spinning our wheels and I'm hoping to get some assistance on how to do something like this in Umbraco. Perhaps I'm searching/using the wrong terminology?
Most of our components are super simple, and rather than create a reusable component, we can just use the grid editor. In our example above, we could create a 50/50 grid row and put an image in the left column and the text in the right. This would work, but we'd like to have a little more of a reusable package. Furthermore, a few of the components will require some controller functionality to be able to hit an API and massage some data before passing it to the presentation layer.
We will keep investigating, but ultimately I'm hoping someone can clear up if we're going down the wrong path, or just missing some crucial point here.
Sure! Two ways come to mind for me. One would be make a simple doctype like the screenshot below and let layout decide how to stack them
This sample uses bootstrap which of course you don't have to use, and in my case I have them in a nested content element so I basically just loop through them and alternate putting flex-row-reverse on the row.
#{
var i = 0
foreach(var contentBlock in Model.ContentBlocks)
{
<div class="d-flex flex-wrap align-items-center #(i %2 != 0 ? "flex-row-reverse" : null)">
<div class="block-left col-sm-7">
<h5>#contentBlock.SectionHeading</h5>
#Html.Raw(contentBlock.SectionDescription.ToString())
</div>
#if(contentBlock.HasValue("sectionImage") && contentBlock.SectionImage != null)
{
<div class="block1-right col-sm-5 ml-auto">
<figure class="hover">
<img id="#contentBlock.SectionImage.Name.Trim().Replace(" ", "-")" src="#contentBlock.SectionImage.Url">
</figure>
</div>
}
</div>
i++;
}
}
The other way (as you asked for) is to give the content editor the choice with a toggle, add a toggle to the doctype
and instead of this line
<div class="d-flex flex-wrap align-items-center #(i %2 != 0 ? "flex-row-reverse" : null)">
you could use this line
<div class="d-flex flex-wrap align-items-center #(contentBlock.SectionAlignment == true ? "flex-row-reverse":null)">
Or even something like this where you just assign your own class and write the CSS separately
<div class="d-flex flex-wrap align-items-center #(contentBlock.SectionAlignment == true ? "block-right":"block-left")">
Hope that helps get you going in the right direction. I'm sure you'll have to adapt this for your situation and this code is not tested.
Happy to help if you have any issues.

How to add autocomplete feature in node.js search bar?

I am using Node as the server side language and a mongodb database. I wanted to know how can you add the auto complete functionality in the search bar. For example, I have a property "materialCode" in my object and when I type in say "12" I want a drop down box showing all the materialCodes that start with 12 in that particular collection. Any help would be appreciated
Generally We will do that in front end. If you are using html5 then it can be easily done.(Assuming you are using any template engine or angular or react.) Get all the data from backend(node) using any service call (Say you stored data in allMaterialCode). Then loop through that allMaterialCode and send materialCode values to html5 dataList like below. (Bind materialCode by looping allMaterialsCode). (Assuming you are running node ejs server)
<input list="browsers">
<datalist id="browsers">
<%
var dataObj = ["12","1223","12456","12345","13322","9877"];
%>
<%
for ( let singleItem of dataObj ) {
%>
<option value='<%= singleItem %>'>
<%
}
%>
</datalist>

How to render express views dynamically

I'm new to express JS and try to build CMS like this:
Users have a page builder, where they can drag-and-drop different components on the page.
each component has its own data which also is defined by a user
Each component has its own view template
So, I have to check what components have to load, prepare data for each of them, send this data to an appropriate template, render one big HTML and send to the client.
I know, It's too complicated to explain how to build this, but any tutorials, examples, resources would be appreciated.
IIUC, you can accomplish this using the include function that most template languages have. For the example, I'll use ejs. Also, I'm assuming you know how to get the data for user selections to your server.
on your app.js:
app.get('/someRoute', function(req, res) {
var data = //get user data here
res.render('someTemplate', {data:data});
});
someTemplate.ejs:
<%- include('header') %> //you should do this on every page
<% if (data == 'foo') { %>
<%- include('foo', {data:data}) %> //note that you can pass data to templates like this
<% } %>
<% if (data == 'bar') %>
<%- include('bar') %>
<% } %>
<% include('footer') %>
foo.ejs:
//some component here
If you want to read more, check the docs.
Hope this helps!
You can use Template Engine for that purpose because it enables you to use static template files in your application. At run time, the template engine replaces variables in a template file with actual values, and transforms the template into an HTML file sent to the client. This approach makes it easier to design an HTML page.
Some popular template engines that work with Express are Pug, Mustache, and EJS. The Express application generator uses Jade as its default, but it also supports several others.

Create a new DOM element with EJS

I am rendering a view with the EJS template engine based on some dynamic variables. For example:
res.render("index", {
dynamicVariable: newEverytime
});
I am currently inserting it inside my HTML like so
<% if(someCondition){ %>
<div>
<%= dynamicVariable %>
</div>
<% } %>
I want EJS to create a new <a>tag every time as opposed to replacing my a tag each time. How can I achieve this?
EJS on the server side doesn't create any DOM nodes. It processes HTML source code as text. It just prints strings and it's the HTML parser on the client side that creates the DOM nodes from that.
I think you are asking about a strange solution to a problems that you say nothing about. It would b more useful to ask about the actual problems you're having, what have you tried so far and why it's not working.

Passing arguments from node.js to knockout.js through ejs

I have a node.js that consumes mongodb data and outputs lists using knockout.js
When i invoke the view i pass a json structure using
res.render('list', { items:json });
In the list.ejs template page i've defined a hidden element:
<input type="hidden" id="hidden" value="<%= items %>">
and in .js file i read its value:
var json=$("#hidden").val();
var tkts=jQuery.parseJSON(json);
var vm=new AppViewModel(tkts);
Well...it runs but i think (hope) there must be a better way do it ... is there a way to avoid a hidden html var, for example?
Currently I can think of three ways to do this.
1.) Assign the data to a variable in your JavaScript code:
<script type="text/javascript">solution1 = {"name": "solution1"}</script>
solution1
2.) Add a data-attribute to an element of your liking:
<div id="solution2" data-value='{"name": "solution2"}'></div>
JSON.parse(document.getElementById('solution2').dataset.value)
3.) Use the script tag and choose a different content type than text/javascript or application/javascript
<script id="solution3" type="script" type="text/json">{"name": "solution3"}</script>
JSON.parse(document.getElementById('solution3').innerHTML)

Personal note
It might sound boring, but the first option is probably the best choice. It is fast, requires as little code as possible and just works. I don't see a reason why you would want to have your data in a string first if you can have it as JavaScript data right away.
You could add an inline script if you are serving up a full page... Of course this would pollute the global namespace.
<script>
var tkts = <%= items %>;
</script>
If you are using AJAX to get this page... then break it into two AJAX requests... one of them gets the template, and the other one can get the list of items (as a JSON request). They could run in parallel so it might even be quicker.
