Morning all,
I want to add a hyperlink\navigation element from one site collection (site 1) to another site collection (site 2).
I only want the link viable on site 1 to people who are permissioned in site 2.
If you do not have permission to view site 2 then the link in site one should not be visible .
Help.
I think you could check the audience setting for navigation.
Official guideline below.

I have a SharePoint Site called ProxymGroup which has multiple affiliates and departments.
I created the webApplication and added 2 managed Paths of type WildCard called Affiliates and Departments.
Under affiliates i needed to create 3 site collections and under departments 2 other SiteCollections. So, here i have the links for the siteCollections:
http://MyHostName/affiliates/SiteCol1 ... and http://MyHostName/departments/SiteCol1 ... etc.
My goal is to display all that hierarchy in theTopNavigationBar menu of the siteCollection because when i activated SharePoint server publishing feature and checked Show SubSites in navigation tab under site sittings it only showed me the subsites, not the siteCollections created under this site.
How can i do please to get that hierachy shown in my TopNavigationBar menu???
Thanks in advance
as far as I know there is no ootb way to show information in the navigation shared among site collections. each site has its own master page and can only display subsites, not other site collections.
alternatively, you can create a powershell script that sets the same navigational items for all the existing site collections, adding links for all the existing sites in all menus of all sites
...or just create subsites
Go to Site settings -> Look and Feel -> Navigation and you can add links manually and change the hierarchy as you want , Please check below image for same.
I have two features that add CustomAction to the SiteSettings page. One feature is at the Site level and the other is at Web level.
The CustomAction that is being added at the Site level is a link to the custom configuration page that manipulates Site level settings for my application. Therefore, I don't want the link displayed for the SiteSettings page of a subsite. I know there is a setting (RequireSiteAdministrator) that hides the page according to access level, but I would still like to have this page show up for Site owners at the top/root level site settings page and not in the sub site level setting page.
There is a RootWebOnly attribute for the CustomAction xml node which would solve my problem. The problem with this attribute is that it only available for SandBoxed solutions.
I know that this is possible, since I see the behavior for the Site collection administrators link in the Users and Permissions section of the Site Settings page. Please notice that if you go to the top/root level settings page, you will see this link. On the other hand, if you navigate to the Site Settings page of a subsite, the link is no longer there.
I have tried using HideCustomAction, but this hides the link on both pages.
After battling with this for two day, I had an ah moment that I thought I would share. This will allow you to place a custom action that will show only at the root web level.
Create 2 features. One at the site level (siteFeature) and one at the web level (webFeature).
Make the web feature hidden so that it can't be accessed (activate/deactivate) though manage features page.
Put the custom actions element xml in the web feature.
In the activation event receiver of the site feature, activate the web feature.
UnfortunlyUnfortunately this is not possible with custom actions and custom group.
All you can do is just to set up permissions on the link that will be shown only to SiteCollection Administrator
Example how it will be is "Site Collection Administation" group where links are hidden when you are not on the top site level and shown when you are.
Hope it helps,
Andrew
I'm working on remolding my companies current exsisting Sharepoint site. I installed the SP ZAP Slideshow webpart and went to the sharepoint site to insert it, and absolutely no webparts were listed. I went into the provided Sharepoint 2010 central administration and realized that everything seems to be listed as
//usmvwc0wtf1srv.ww005.work.net/sitepages/
When the website were hosting, and it should be listing is
//usmvwc0wtf1srv.ww005.work.net/sites/
I went to the /sitepages website and all the webparts exsisted and worked, however i need to get them working on the /sites page. Is there some way to switch it so it will not default all the webparts and content i'm uploading to the wrong page? I feel as though the wrong default page is listed? sorry new to all this!
Web Parts, which you see listed and are able to insert on a page when you edit it, come from the Web Part Gallery in the site collection. They are usually installed to the gallery when you activate their site collection-scope feature. Check what features you didn't activate in the new site collection - I suspect that one of them is responsible for the installation of Web Parts you are looking for. (The scope of the feature can be site collection or site - check both.)
How would you go about having WSS search index content that's inside a webpart/pulled from an external source and presented in a SPGridView?
You probably already know this, but if you go to Site Settings -> Search Visibility you will see a section stating:
This site contains fine-grained permissions. Specify the sites ASPX page indexing behavior: ...
If you choose "Always index all ASPX pages on this site" it should index the content in your web part, but only as the crawler sees it, so security trimming would not apply. It is basically a web crawl and not a SharePoint content crawl.
I know you said WSS, but in MOSS you might be able to take this one step further if the above did not work out and use a web site search on your SharePoint site. I have done plenty of web site searches (it does not work perfectly), but have not tried to explicitly do a web site search on a SharePoint site so I'm not certain this will work.
Lars (who co-wrote "Inside the Index and Search Engines: MOSS 2007") is pretty active on StackOverflow so maybe he'll chime in.
Also in MOSS: Have the data you are displaying available as for instance a web service / page in a different site also. In Moss you can add Federated Search locations to be included in the Search results.
Which web part and how to configure it to view a list from a different site collection?
Please note that I do not want to view a page but a list. For example view Announcements from a different team site under a seperate site collection.
Thank you in advance for your help.
The Data Form web part available through SharePoint designer can do this.
The Content Query Web Part (CQWP) which is part of the publishing infrastructure (requires MOSS) does not go across site collections.
Re http://www.spelements.com/spanylistview/
The problem with this one is you have to be able to INSTALL it on the server.
If you do not have those permissions, it cannot be used.
Don't bother asking if they can be obtained. They can't.
