I'm trying to open a project from TFS 2018 (on-premises installation but I guess that would happen with any version or VSTS as well) dashboard but I can't.
I click on url Open in Visual Studio:

I have installed both VS2012 and 2017.
I tried also this workaround, but with no success:
Launch Developer Command Prompt for VS 2017 as Administrator
Go to VS 2017 installation folder, for example: pushd C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Enterprise
Launch command: gacutil -if Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies\Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.8.0.dll
In the Windows Default Apps panel open the protocol handlers and scroll down to the vsweb: and the vstfs: protocol handlers. It could have multiple instances of the handler, one of which has to have the 2017 icon. Mine is showing 2 2017 icons because I have the 2017 preview installed side by side.
Change the default, restart the browser and try again.
In addition to jessehouwing answer, that works for Windows Metro UI systems (8 and superiors), this is what you need for Windows 7.
Go to Control Panel, select Default Programs and click the second option:
Then it opens the window where you have to change the association between Visual Studio Web Handler Selector and TFS Procotol Handler (vstfs:):
From the icon, as suggested, you can see that's Visual Studio 2012 symbol.
Now we change it:

I have an ASP .NET web site project that was developed in Visual Studio 2012. We just migrated the project to Visual Studio 2015.
I've googled around and I keep reading about a "Create Virtual Directory" button and a "Use Local IIS" option but neither are present. In the project properties page all I see are the options "Use default Web server" and "Use custom server" along with a "Base URL" text field.
I'm running Visual Studio 2015 on Windows 10 Pro.
What am I missing?
Have you enabled IIS in Windows Features?
Press the Windows Key and type Windows Features.
Select the first entry Turn Windows Features On or Off.
Make sure the box next to IIS is checked. If it is not checked, check it and it will install everything you need. Be patient as this could take a few minutes.
IIS should now be accessible from Control Panel > Administrative Tools
You should now be able to go to the properties page of you application and change your website setting from IIS Express to Local IIS
I'm trying to get a decent development experience with Visual Studio 2015 Preview.
To do that I'd love to have my IIS Express running all the time instead of requiring me to start debugging.
Anyway to do that? Tried command line:
IISExpress.exe /path:pathmyproject/wwwroot
IISExpress.exe /site:SiteName
and
IISExpress.exe /path:pathtomyproject
First two give me:
Unable to locate project.json
Third one
HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden
Not exactly an answer, but if you can view in browser instead of Debug.
The command for view in browser is: CTRL+ SHIFT + W (or right click on project and select View -> View in broswer.)
IIS Express will start but will not close when you exit your browser.
Hope this helps, this is what I do (specially now that build/compile is no required with roslyn).
Similar to VS 2013, if you disable Edit and Continue IIS Express will continue to run when you stop your debug sessions.
Open the menu item Tools/Options, look for the Debugging/General option. Scroll down and uncheck "Enable Edit and Continue"
in the Debug menu > Start without debugging (Ctr + F5)
Visual Studio 2015 Update 3 adds the support to keep IIS Express Running
For ASP.NET Web Application projects, when "Enable Edit and Continue" checkbox is unchecked, the IIS Express process will no longer stop working every time you stop debugging.

I just unchecked Edit & Continue option under project properties -> Web -> Debugger.
I'm using VS2015. It is working for me.
This problem occurred to me when trying to run a cloned project. The solution that worked to me was installing Microsoft.NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2.
Go to Tools --> Extensions and Updates --> click Updates
Look for Microsoft.NET Core 1.0.1 VS 2015 Tooling Preview 2 and install the update if it is available.
My need
Currently I have to open Visual Studio to make a get latest or a commit pending changes.
I want to do that the same way with TortoiseSVN right in Windows Explorer.
What I have tried
I made google research and comes down to using the tool called TFS 2012 Power Tools
Someone also mentioned about this issue here

Assuming that when you installed the power tools you enabled shell integration and then logged out/back in to active them, then you need to do a few things:
Do an initial 'get' from TFS using Visual Studio Team Explorer and make a note of your workspace folder.
In Windows Explorer, right click that workspace folder. You should see the context menu items appear.
Most people having trouble with the context menu appearing have forgotten that to log out and log back in, as Windows Explorer needs to be restarted to pick up the new shell extension.
When I try to view a .sql file from Source Control Explorer in Visual Studio 2012 (TFS 2012) I get the following error message:
TF10187: Could not open document
FilePath\FileName
User canceled out of save dialog
It's only happening for SQL files. The file does exist in the TFSTemp folder and I can double click and open it from there. What do I need to change to fix this error message?

For us, this seems to be linked to a .NET Framework 4.6 upgrade and is not limited to SQL files. Users have issues opening files from Source Control Explorer and Solution Explorer.
Delete the contents from the following folders:
C:\Users\<>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Team Foundation
C:\Users\<>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio
C:\Users\<>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VSCommon
The first step fixed it in my case, but you can try this if it doesn't: Navigate to the Visual Studio IDE folder in command prompt or windows explorer and Run the following command "devenv /resetuserdata". Ie: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE. To minimize the potential loss of the user’s personal environment, you should consider creating a backup using the Export Settings wizard, and the Import Settings wizard to restore the settings if and when needed.
Note: The side effects of running the /resetuserdata option is that any customizations will have to be reconfigured (ie: TFS server and proxy settings) as well as many, if not all, Visual Studio extensions have to be re-installed.

Looks like you need to uninstall Redgate and then re-install the data tools. This is probably because an add-in was trying to grab the .SQL files and do something with them that VS wasn't expecting.
I just installed Windows 8 and Visual Studio 2012. Now I want to create a Windows store app.
But every time I try to get the developer license everything freezes...
Example PowerShell:
Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration
Dialog "Accept"
Login
Dialog "getting license" (I use the german version, so the message could be different)
The dialog closes, the PowerShell Console is still frozen
The same thing happens in Visual Studio (background process not responding). Any idea?
I searched a few hours but the only solution I found was to remove Visual Studio and reinstall it completely...
