await inside async controller function [duplicate] - node.js

I am working on a simple TCP client for a server and am using the latest node 7.6 because of the async/await functions. I'm new to node and asynchronous coding, so I apologize if this is stupidly easy.
I want to run a function that calls the callServer() function with specific parameters, wait until it finishes getting the data, and return the data as a variable.
Here is my code:

So I didn't declare objectRequest() as async because it's not waiting on the server, but I think callServer() should be async, right? I know this can be done with promises, but I wanted to use async/await and this seems to be right.
Now, I want to return the data that comes from inside callServer() and client.on('data', (data) but I can't seem to figure out how to do it asynchronously. I would think there'd be a way to make an async function and call it with await like I tried (await return data) but it never works right.
I'm sorry if this is terribly convoluted, but I've been poring over async node tutorials for the past week and am still stuck.

Async/Await relies on code that uses promises for async operations. So you need to return a promise from any async operation in order to use it with async/await.
So, callServer() needs to return a promise that is resolved when the async operation inside it is done. In fact, you can only await an async operation in a function if that function returns a promise. await saves you from having to write .then() handlers on promises, but async/await does not magically know when async operations are done. You still have to wrap them in promises.
Here's an example of how you could make callServer() return a promise:

Just to show you what await is doing, in ES5 (without async/await), the sample usage would be this:

So, await is just letting you avoid writing the .then() handler. Internally in the execution of the code, there's just a promise that the interpreter sets up a .then() handler for so it will know when that promise is resolved. This is syntactical sugar, not really any magic with async operations. You still have to use promises for all your async operations. You can use await instead of .then() and your code will appear more sequential even though it's really the same under the covers.
People think that await allows one to write asynchronous code as if it was synchronous, but that isn't really the case, especially if you handle errors and understand concurrency issues. It will look more synchronous, but isn't actually any more synchronous than it was with .then() in ES5.
And, watch out for error handling. In people's quest to write synchronous looking code, people seem to completely forget to handle rejected promises in their async operations (which are handled with try/catch when using await). I'm personally not yet convinced that ES6 is a step forward when it comes to error handling as the early indications are that ES6 seems to encourage people to just forget about error handling or get lazy and not do it, whereas it's easier when using .then() to just know that there should be a .catch() somewhere for it to be solid code. Maybe that's just a learning process, but it seems to be an early issue when people use await.

await consumes promise/future / task-returning methods/functions and async marks a method/function as capable of using await.
Also if you are familiar with promises, await is actually doing the same process of promise/resolve. Creating a chain of promise and executes your next task in resolve callback.

When I got this error, it turned out I had a call to the map function inside my "async" function, so this error message was actually referring to the map function not being marked as "async". I got around this issue by taking the "await" call out of the map function and coming up with some other way of getting the expected behavior.

Express items tend to look like this:

For whatever reason, the await keyword has been implemented such that it can only be used within an async method. This is in fact a bug, though you will not see it referred to as such anywhere but right here. The fix for this bug would be to implement the await keyword such that it can only be used TO CALL an async function, regardless of whether the calling function is itself synchronous or asynchronous.
Due to this bug, if you use await to call a real asynchronous function somewhere in your code, then ALL of your functions must be marked as async and ALL of your function calls must use await.
This essentially means that you must add the overhead of promises to all of the functions in your entire application, most of which are not and never will be asynchronous.
If you actually think about it, using await in a function should require the function containing the await keyword TO NOT BE ASYNC - this is because the await keyword is going to pause processing in the function where the await keyword is found. If processing in that function is paused, then it is definitely NOT asynchronous.
So, to the developers of javascript and ECMAScript - please fix the await/async implementation as follows...
await can only be used to CALL async functions.
await can appear in any kind of function, synchronous or asynchronous.

Using async/await with util.promisify(fs.readFile)?

I'm trying to learn async/await and your feedback would help a lot.
I'm simply using fs.readFile() as a specific example of functions that has not been modernized with Promises and async/await.
(I'm aware of fs.readFileSync() but I want to learn the concepts.)

Is it OK to pass an async function to setImmediate in order to call an arbitrary function asynchronously?

I want to call a given function asynchronously. The wrapper function tryCallAsync is one way of doing this. This approach works. However, it requires that the callback for setImmediate to be an async function. This seems wrong, as the callback is returning a Promise that is not used. Is it wrong to pass an async function to setImmediate for this purpose?

Yes, it's wrong, for multiple reasons:
setImmediate doesn't handle the returned promise, especially it doesn't deal with errors1
Don't put business logic in asynchronous (non-promise) callbacks when using promises. Settle a promise from there, nothing else.
1: And even while your particular callback never rejects the returned promise due to the try/catch, it still feels wrong
Your function should be written as

How to export async function from a node module

I'm trying to write a node module, to handle my various db calls.
I want to use async/await where ever I can, but I'm having some issues with it.
I've been using promises a bit, and export those functions fine.

But, how should I do this, with an async function, to use the async/await that is available in node7?
Do I still just return a promise? I tried doing that, but when I then call it in my code, it doesn't work.

var result = await db.GetUsernames();
It gives me:
SyntaxError: Unexpected identifier
on the db name (works fine if I just use the promise functions, with then().)
Maybe my google skills are terrible, but I haven't managed to google anything I could use, on this issue.
How on earth do I make an async function, in my module, that I can await elsewhere?
To turn on the await keyword, you need to have it inside an async function.

let result = getUserNames();
async function getUserNames() {
return await db.GetUsernames();

Also, just as an FYI, it a code convention to start function with lowercase, unless you are returning a class from it.
async - await pattern really makes your code easier to read. But node do not allow for global awaits. You can only await an asynchronous flow. What you trying to do is to await outside async flow. This is not permitted. This is kind of anti-pattern for node application. When dealing with promises, what we actually do is generate an asynchronous flow in our program. Our program continue without waiting for promise. So you can export your functions as async but cannot await for them outside async flow. for example.
const db = require('dataprovider');
...
let result = (async () => await db.GetUserNames())();
console.log(result); // outputs: Promise { <pending> }
Thus, async-await pattern works for async flow. Thus use them inside async functions, so that node can execute them asynchronously. Also, you can await for Promises as well. for example.
let fn = async () => await new Promise( (resolve, reject)=>{...} );
fn().then(...);
Here you have created async function 'fn'. This function is thenable. also you can await for 'fn' inside another async function.
let anotherFn = async () => await fn();
anotherFn().then(...);
Here we are waiting for async function inside a async function. Async-Await pattern makes your code readable and concise. This is reflected in large projects.
lets say that you have below function in baseoperation.ts
async function GetAllwithFilter(keyword?: any){
//... async job here
}
then simply you can add below code on the end of baseoperation.ta
module.exports = { GetAllOrAnyName: GetAllwithFilter}
and in the required class you can call it using
const objname = require('./baseoperation');
and to call it in the api using express and router you can use route function with get because it's accept promise call direct
router.route('/').get((req,res) => { objname.GetUsernames().then(then(result => {
res.json(result[0]);
});
