I am trying to change my url through .htaccess in the following way
Original URL: http://www.example.com/latest-news.php?id=2/topic=testing
Rewritten URL:http://www.example.com/2/testing
Rule for .htaccess
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/([^/]*)$ /latest-news.php?id=$1&topic=$2 [L]
This is working fine but the other files which are existing in a folder are not opening. The url is opening as www.example.com/testing/foo.php but content of the page is of http://www.example.com/2/testing
Can you try with a similar rule like the one bellow?
RewriteRule ^([0-9]+)/([a-zA-Z])$ /latest-news.php?id=$1&topic=$2 [L]
Can't really test it on my server but you can adapt it to suit your needs

I have a website where i have pages like:
domain.com/?p=settings
domain.com/?p=daily
And i am looking for rewrite that ?p= part, so it would be like
domain.com/settings
So far i have tried to add this to htaccess files:
RewriteRule ^([^\.]+)$ $1?p= [NC,L]
but it did not worked.
Also I have tried look from Google but could not find any.
I have tried other RewriteRule's but they did not work either.
RewriteRule does not include query string. It is available as a separate variable enter link description here
The Pattern will initially be matched against the part of the URL after the hostname and port, and before the query string (e.g. "/app1/index.html"). This is the (%-decoded) URL-path.
So the following won't work.
RewriteRule ^([^.]+)$ $1?p= [NC,L]
You need something like
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(\w+)=(\w+)$
RewriteRule ^/ %2?

You were close with your attempt, you need to use this in your .htaccess:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)$ /?p=$1 [L]
Make sure to clear your cache before testing this.
I want this: RewriteRule ^paper$ /express/index.php?c=p [L] but it does not work. Instead, it's trying to send me to /index.php?c=p, ignoring the subdirectory express altogether. However, RewriteRule ^express/paper$ /express/index.php?c=p [L] works. This is my .htaccess code:

RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^paper$ /express/index.php?c=p [L]
RewriteRule ^express/paper$ /express/index.php?c=p [L]
The url I WANT is just http://site.com/paper but I have to do http://site.com/express/paper to get the rewrite rule to work.
And yes, I only use one of those rewrite rules at a time.

My blog's .htaccess is setup in such a way that one page is accessed through multiple URLs, and displays different content depending on which URL is visited.

all are actually using http://kn3rdmeister.com/blog.php.
The .htaccess file is very handy in the sense that I only need to redirect to one page (pretty much ever) just with different query strings. After a lot messing around with 'em, all of my rules finally work, and I'm dang glad that they do. Well, almost all of them work. The last one does not.
the .htaccess:

The last rule is supposed to redirect to the "permanent link" page for each blog post. Being that each URL is unique, I'm using the post URLs as the unique identifier. Essentially, it is supposed to pass the "url" query string through "blog.php". The PHP script takes over, sees that the "url" query string is set, and then loads the only post with that exact URL in it's row.
The script works, but the redirect doesn't. Going directly to
http://kn3rdmeister.com/blog.php?url=http://kn3rdmeister.com/2012/07/04/amsterdam-ave/
will load the right content. However, going to
http://kn3rdmeister.com/2012/07/04/amsterdam-ave/
doesn't.
Try adding QSA (Query String Append). Also, invert rules so that "deeper" links go on top.

But, you can't use rewritten links in other rules. So wherever you have category/blog/ replace it with blog.php.
Whilst webarto comments are good advice, your problem is a missing [:

I am using .htaccess file to redirect my archived old aspx urls to my new php site. Now the requirement is as follows:
example.com/showad.aspx?adid=1234 should be example.com/ad/getad/1234
I googled the matter and got the following htaccess rule:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^adid=(\d+)$
RewriteRule ^showad\.aspx$ /ad/getad/%1
The rule works except that the resulting url is example.com/ad/getad/1234?adid=1234
I searched again and learned that to remove the (adid=1234) at the end of the output url you should place a question mark ? at the end of the substitution parameter, so that the rule should be:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^adid=(\d+)$
RewriteRule ^showad\.aspx$ /ad/getad/%1?
But it doesn't work!
The resulting url is STILL having the original query string appended to it. I am using this site to test my htaccess rules: htaccess.madewithlove.be
Any clues why is this happening?
Try changing your rule to
RewriteRule ^showad\.aspx$ /ad/getad/%1? [R=302,L]
Your rule is fine - I just tested it in my own .htaccess. It's the htaccess tester website that's wrong :)
I need to change the structure of the displayed client-side URL. I'm not too skilled using regex and coding for the .htaccess file. Basically, I have a structure that looks something like:
http://www.example.com/catalog/index.php?cat=lt&sec=lt1-1&id=nmlt10.
I would like this to be displayed in the address bar as:
http://www.example.com/catalog/lt/lt1-1/nmlt10.
This is what I came up with, but it has had no effect:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/([^/]*)/([^/]*)\$ /catalog/index.php?cat=$1&sec=$2&id=$3 [L]
I tested and removed any other rules in the .htaccess file to ensure nothing was being overwritten. I'm on a shared hosting apache server, and know that mod_rewrite is enabled, because I use it to rewrite non-www to www urls. I don't receive and 500 error messages, I just do not notice any change at all. I'm not sure where I'm going wrong here, so hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
Finally found a solution that worked:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/?$ index.php?cat=$1&sec=$2&id=$3 [QSA,L]

I wasn't able to following links that were already placed on the site, it treated different directories as the variables, for example, when browsing to an image or file, say:
folder/folder/image.png
It would grab "folder" - "folder" - and "image" as the variables. I can see why that was happening, if anyone has a different solution or an explanation, please let me know, I'm always willing to learn.
Since your .htaccess is in website root folder, then you should use thus rule:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^catalog/([^/]+)/([^/]+)/([^/]+)$ /catalog/index.php?cat=$1&sec=$2&id=$3 [QSA,L]
If you place it in .htaccess in /catalog/ folder, then you can remove catalog from it:
