on my mutualized server (hosted by OVH), I have the following directories :
/cgi-bin (for my perl scripts)
/www (website html files)
for one specific URL (http://www.example.com/try), I call a CGI perl script to create the HTML page dynamically. For this purpose I created a .htaccess file under /www with the following:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule try /cgi-bin/try.pl
Everything works fine !
I recently tried to migrate my site to a sub domain : swift.example.com by creating /swift directory and copying/pasting everything from /www.
Of course I made all the DNS stuff under my site manager to have swift.mysite.com pointing to /swift.
All the static HTML navigation works fine but URL http://swift.example.com/try returns an Internal Server Error.
www being a sub domain such as as swift, why would it crash when both sub domains are identical ?
Thanks for your help.
Fred
You need to exclude the destination path you are rewriting to,Try :
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/cgi-bin
RewriteRule try /cgi-bin/try.pl [L]

I've tried to add the item below in .htaccess(wamp64\bin\apache\apache2.4.37\conf) and enabled Use URL Rewriting in Joomla however when I try to type abc.com in search engine address bar it will still redirect me to search page instead of redirecting me to the website. I've also performed checking and confirmed that .htaccess file is readable, the webpage is work when go to https://www.abc.co m however redirection still not work. I just need the page to redirect from http://abc.co m to https://www.abc.co m Is there any other way to do it? Or I'm doing it wrongly?? Please help.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^abc.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://www.abc.co m/$1 [L,R=301]
The redirect itself works great. The issue is where you've put the file.
.htaccess files are meant to be in the root folder and sub-directories of your website, not in the config files for Apache. Think of them as configuration files the server will find on-the-fly as it serves up documents, not static configurations loaded when the server starts (which are found in the "conf" folder you referred to). (See https://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/howto/htaccess.html)
For WAMP, the root folder is typically a folder called "www" and is normally located at c:/wamp/www. See Where is the web server root directory in WAMP? More commonly, though, this folder is called "public_html" (such as with LAMP, XAMP, MAMP, or default Apache installs).
I have this project called 'site01'.
It is published as: 'www.example.com/site01'. The pages are like this 'www.example.com/site01/page/1'.
I'm able to route the url to 'www.example.com/site01/1', but can I change the url to 'www.example.com/s/1' through the routes configuration?
Initially I think that you have to use .htaccess way, because the issue is related to the outside of the CakePHP folder.
You can create a new file named .htaccess in the upper folder and write the instruction witch redirect /site01/ to /s/.
sample code for rewrite url:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^site01.*$ /s/ [R=301,L]
I have setup two domains to point to the same hosting server. For eg: the domains be :
example1.com
example2.com
I have created a directory called 'home' in my root, and whenever the 2nd domain is accessed, it should get redirected to the home directory.
For eg: example2.com/post.php should get redirected to example2.com/home/post.php
I have done this by creating an htaccess file in my root directory with the following contents:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} example2.com$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !home
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ ./home/$1
This is working perfectly. Now, i have a second requirement where i need to redirect users to a php file (post.php) inside home directory whenever the user accesses the url example2.com/gallery/somestring.
So, i created a second htaccess file in my home directory and entered the following code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^gallery/([^/]+)$ post.php?post=$1
But, whenever i try to access the url example2.com/gallery/somestring, it shows a strange 404 Not Found error :
The requested URL /home/redirect:/home/gallery.html/somestring/somestring was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Here. "redirect:" string is getting concatenated to the redirected URL somehow.
Can any one please give me some idea as to why its happening ??
I solved this problem. I am sharing this if any one gets into this same problem and finds this post. The problem was that there was a file gallery.html in my root folder. This was causing this error. Just delete this file or rename the file to some thing else. Thats it :)
Just building a site using php. I would like to know how to create pages without having to make ".php" links for every page. For example I want to build the site to be as follows: www.mysite.com/products instead of www.mysite.com/products.php. (Further example www.mysite.com/products/headphones )
An example of what I am looking for is as follows: http://www.starbucks.ca/store-locator
Any idea how starbucks is doing this? It isn't making a separate folder and index for every page is it?
Thanks in advance!
Jason
You can use URL rewriting to do this. You can create a .htaccess file, place it in the root directory of your website with the following content (as an example):
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^tutorial/([0-9]+)/$ index.php?tutorial=$1
RewriteRule ^page/store-locator/$ index.php?page=store-locator
RewriteRule ^$ index.php
These are some basic rules that tell the web server to rewrite a URL without .php to a URL that does have .php.
In the above example, when you are visiting example.com/tutorial/3/, it will actually visit example.com/index.php?tutorial=3 and then your index.php will display the contents. It's similar for the store-locator page.
I am currently setting up a website from a client on his hosting account. The website address and for some reason doesn't default to .php files (that is: index.php). If I put index.php and there is no index.html file I receive the following error:
If you feel you have reached this page in error, please contact the
web site owner: someemail#example.com If you are the web site owner,
it is possible you have reached this page because: The IP address has
changed. There has been a server misconfiguration. The site may have
been moved to a different server. If you are the owner of this website
and were not expecting to see this page, please contact your hosting
provider.
His hosting is a shared hosting on cpanel.
Use the DirectoryIndex directive in your .htaccess file
DirectoryIndex index.php
The problem was caused by my web-browser cache, as soon as I have cleared my cache it worked!
Try
DirectoryIndex index.php
if that doesn't work you might have to work around it by providing index.html like
<html><frameset rows="*"><frame src="index.php"></frameset></html>
(ofcourse more elaborate)
You can set your default page as the directory index using .htaccess file in 2 ways.
First method
DirectoryIndex yourfile.php
Above code will set 'yourfile.php' as the directory index. But this will applies to all sub folders as well and may occur '404' error for some related urls.
Second method
Use this code to set your handler file for the root directory
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^$ /yourfile.php [L]
If you want to set a handler file for the sub folder, use this one
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^subfolder/$ /yourfile.php [L]
