I am using Ubuntu in Virtualbox (both installed on Windows OS). I downloaded Hadoop to Windows (Downloads folder) in order to install it on Ubuntu. But I am unable to complete this task. I follow Hadoop installation steps from here.
I tried 2 options below and I received the following errors:
hduser#ubuntu14:/usr/local$ sudo cp ~/Downloads/hadoop2.7.1.tar.gz .
cp: cannot stat ‘/home/hduser/Downloads/hadoop2.7.1.tar.gz’: No such file or directory
and:
hduser#ubuntu14:/usr/local$ wget http://mirrors.sonic.net/apache/hadoop/common/hadoop-2.7.1/hadoop-2.7.1.tar.gz

hadoop-2.7.1.tar.gz: Permission denied
Cannot write to ‘hadoop-2.7.1.tar.gz’ (Permission denied).
Your errors are pretty intuitive here.
Option 1 you tried:
You cannot copy from the machine hosting the VM to the VM unless you have defined a shared folder, hence the /home/hduser/Downloads/hadoop2.7.1.tar.gz not found error.
Option 2 you tried:
Cannot write to hadoop-2.7.1.tar.gz (Permission denied). means you do not have the appropriate permissions in order to download this file.
You can try the same command in option 2 with sudo in order to fix this or download the hadoop tar file from within your VM and extract it for your first option.
Add sudoat the beginning of the command to solve the Permission problem. It allows a permitted user to execute a command as the superuser or another user.

I'm trying to setup a code-server (vscode in browser) instance and read/write from a mounted samba share. Unfortunately when I try to add a file it gives me an error that I do not have permissions to read/write to that folder. When I try to add files with the same credentials on Windows it does work though. This is the error that VSCode gives me:
Unable to write file
'vscode-remote://localhost:8080/home/user/repository/test'
(NoPermissions (FileSystemError): Error: EACCES: permission denied,
open '/home/gmetitieri/user/test')
If I sudo touch file.txt then the file will be created and added. I already used chmod and added full access to the folder but it still won't work. Is this a credentials thing or am I missing something?
I already tried this answer but it still doesn't let me write as non-root
Edit: This is the command I used to mount the drive (just with different folder names and IP address):
sudo mount -t cifs -o rw,vers=3.0,credentials=/root/.examplecredentials //192.168.18.112/sharedDir /media/share
Considering "non-root through Samba", especially in new releases of OpenSuse (...15.3 -- 15.4), I do few movements into normal configuration panels (no sudo commands or anything technical).
Using Yast Firewall section -- For now (immediate solution):
I turn off the firewall, then see what you can turn on (after this) to keep the samba working with Microsoft Windows.
More details on how to do this with images on my website.
This happens when the directory on the Samba share does not have permission for non-root users.
In your smb4.conf file:
[test]
comment = Test share
path = /path/to/directory
force user = unixuser
valid users = sambauser
In this example, unixuser should be the owner of the files in /path/to/directory. The user logged into Samba in this example is a user called sambauser.
I have set up an Ubuntu server on Digital Ocean. Following are the config details:
Ubuntu version : Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Apache version : Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu)
I am trying to run a php script through browser which will need to create a file in the directory . I keep getting the following permission denied message in the /var/log/apache2/error.log file fopen(<folder_to_write>): failed to open stream: Permission denied in test_write.php
I discovered that the user www-data (apache2 user) is having a permission issue. I changed the owner of the folder as follows :
chown -R www-data:www-data folder_to_write
and then
chmod 2775 folder_to_write
This did not work.
Finally, I tried the last option. I changed the directory permission to sudo chmod -R 777 folder_to_write hoping to get some lead. However, despite giving this full access permission, I got the permission denied message.
Has anyone experienced any such issue earlier? Not sure what I am doing wrong. I tried the same steps with another user and that seems to be working fine.
I appreciate your help. Thank you so much.
fopen(): failed to open stream:
It seems not able to find directory folder_to_write , Please check your absolute directory path if that's configured right for writing to a file.
Having just updated to the newest Windows 10 release (build 14316), I immediately started playing with WSL, the Windows Subsystem for Linux, which is supposed to run an Ubuntu installation on Windows.
Maybe I'm trying the impossible by trying to install Apache on it, but then someone please explain me why this won't be possible.
At any rate, during installation (sudo apt-get install apache2), I received the following error messages after the dependencies were downloaded and installed correctly:
initctl: Unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: No such file or directory
runlevel:/var/run/utmp: No such file or directory
* Starting web server apache2 *
* The apache2 configtest failed.
Output of config test was:
mktemp: failed to create directory via template '/var/lock/apache2.XXXXXXXXXX': No such file or directory
chmod: missing operand after '755'
Try 'chmod --help' for more information.
invoke-rc.d: initscript apache2, action "start" failed.

WARN: / is group writable!
Now, I understand that there seem to be some folders and files missing for Apache2 to work. Before I start changing anything that will mess with my Windows installation, I want to ask whether there's a different way? Also, should I worry about / being group writable or is this just standard Windows behaviour?
In order to eliminate this warning
Invalid argument: AH00076: Failed to enable APR_TCP_DEFER_ACCEP
Add this to the end of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
AcceptFilter http none
Note the following in your output
failed to create directory via template '/var/lock/apache2.XXXXXXXXXX': No such file
I tried listing /var/lock. It points to /run/lock, which doesn't exist.
Create the directory with
mkdir -p /run/lock
The install should now work (you may need to clean the installation first)
You have to start bash.exe in administrator mode to avoid a lot of problems related to network.
i installed Lamp (Apache/MySQL/Php) without any problem :
Start bash.exe in administrator mode
type : sudo apt-get install lamp-server^
add these 2 lines in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf :
Servername localhost
AcceptFilter http none
then you can start apache :
/etc/init.d/apache2 start
Following the great advice here I edited apache2.conf and inserted the following to end of file after receiving all the various errors above and apache2 then worked great on the debian wsl package:
Servername localhost
AcceptFilter http none
AcceptFilter https none
I'm trying to upgrade postgresql database from 9.1 to 9.4. I ran the 9.4 version of pg_upgrade as follows:
sudo -u postgres pg_upgrade -b <path>/postgres/9.1/bin -B <path>/postgres/9.4/bin -d <path>/9.1DBs/ -D <path>/<empty folder>
I get:
check failed for: <path>/postgres/9.1/bin Permission denied
The folder exists, I set the permissions to 777, even gave the postgres user ownership of the directory structure, but I'm still getting the same error.
Running in verbose mode does not provide any extra info.
The partition with that contains the old binaries is mounted under /media/ and I have read/write access.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
This error
check failed for: /postgres/9.1/bin Permission denied
happens because access permission on directories (x bit) need to be set in every directory in the hierarchy, from the root to the directory containing these executables files.
This is detailed at Unix.SE in:
Do the parent directory's permissions matter when accessing a subdirectory?
I am trying to pull a file from another computer into R environment in RStudio on Centos 6
I've tried it in plain R first and when I issue
readLines(pipe( 'ssh root#X.X.X.X "cat /path/somefile.sh"' ))
it correctly asks me for the password of my ssh key and reads the contents.
However if the same command is executed from RStudio all I get is:
ssh_askpass: exec(rpostback-askpass): No such file or directory
Permission denied, please try again.
ssh_askpass: exec(rpostback-askpass): No such file or directory
Permission denied, please try again.
ssh_askpass: exec(rpostback-askpass): No such file or dire
Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password).
I suspect that the reason is because rstudio on centos actually uses rstudio-server user (and gui is provided in a browser). Does anyone know how to properly access ssh'd resources from it ?
UPD: after executing
Sys.setenv(PATH = paste0(Sys.getenv('PATH'), ':/usr/lib/rstudio-server/bin/postback'))
as suggested below it won't output askpass errors, but it still does not work. Now it seems that the console is waiting for the command to execute indefinitely
rpostback-askpass is part of RStudio. It may help to add its location (/usr/lib/rstudio-server/bin/postback on my system) to PATH so that ssh can find it:
Sys.setenv(PATH = paste0(Sys.getenv('PATH'), ':/usr/lib/rstudio-server/bin/postback'))
UPDATE RCurl has scp function for copying files over ssh connection. See this answer for details. If you are running your scripts with RStudio, you can use its API to enter the ssh password interactively with hidden input:
pass <- .rs.askForPassword("password?")
and rstudioapi can help to determine whether the script is launched by RStudio or not.
