notify-send not working (in script) executed from udev - linux

I want a notification in desktop that a particular USB device is inserted.Hence the following is the udev rule.
KERNEL=="sd*",SUBSYSTEMS=="usb",ACTION=="add",RUN+="/home/username/Desktop/notify_script"
notify_script is as follows

su username -c 'notify-send "USB Inserted"'
echo USB_inserted >> /home/username/Desktop/test_file
Problem :
The above script works perfectly if it is executed as root from command line but, notify-send in script is not working if executed from udev.
Question:
How to make notify-send work from udev? or
Is there any other way by which I can achieve notification ?
Is it possible to invoke any GUI from udev?

The main problem is, that the udev-rule will not run in any xorg-related environment per default, thus not knowing which DISPLAY to use. Therefore it will always fail, if You want to echo something into a terminal like a gnome-terminal for example. The script, which shall be executed on the udev-rule-match, must prior to any ui-related execution first export the DISPLAY.
This is done via
export DISPLAY=:0
I assume, that this also will be the problem, and notify-send will just run against the wall.

Autostart GUI application with LXDE session

There's quite a bit of information out there on this topic, but for some reason I just can't get it to work. This is on a raspberry pi running the 'DietPi' flavor over the raspian distro, and is perhaps what separates my question from the others.
So I have a GUI application that I wish to launch at boot, after the LXDE session has begun. So I have utilized the following file here:
/etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart
and added the line:
#/myapplication
This works, however, it launches multiple instances of this program, and the first one always crashes. This creates problems because there's some competition for resources (IO, files, etc). So what I did was create script file, /myapplication-autostart.sh instead like so:

echo "my application is already running"
else
/myapplication
fi
and then changed /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart to #/myapplication-autostart.sh. Now what I find is the program launches once, but the instance crashes. It crashes when it attempts to create a window (opencv imshow). This is strange because the program will also run headless if an X-session is not available, but for some reason it crashes and I do not know where to check why.
Also, to test it wasn't an issue with the script file, I commented everything out except the /myapplication and I have found the script file runs in a continuous loop and every time I close the application it opens back up. I'm not sure why this is either.
I've tried adding a sleep delay in the script and it does not help. For whatever reason, it seems the LXDE autostart script is ran at least 3 times when booting the pi and the circumstances around the first cause the program to crash. Does anybody understand this sequence and behavior of calling this autostart script?
It is also possible to use the XDG standard Autostart - which is independent of the used desktop environment - by placing desktop files at
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/autostart (by default ~/.config/autostart)
or for system-wide autostarts at $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/autostart (by default /etc/xdg/autostart).
Such a .desktop-file could look like:

Here was the final solution...
/etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart added the line:
/myapplication-autostart.sh
and /myapplication-autostart.sh was changed to:

if [[ "$DISPLAY" = ":0" ]]

/myapplication
fi

I had to write the display variable to file in combination with the errors to file to discover the issue. At login 2 X sessions were created, display ":1" and display ":0", in that sequence. Display ":1" crashed because, although not headless, it was not initialized to a particular resolution and there was some resizing code in my program. Display ":0" was the actual display on the HDMI out and the one I wanted. Really, the conditional check to see if the application isn't necessary but I left it in there to be safe. I could have also left the # on the LXDE autostart file but it got annoying in the cases I wanted to close the application because it'd keep re-opening. Possibly I'll put it back later.

First, some comments about opening several instances of the program: when you use "#" at the beginning of the line on the startup file (ex.: #/myapplication), this requests your system to try to launch the program, but if the program fails to open correctly, then the system will try to open it multiple times until it opens correctly -- if you remove "#" from the line beginning, then the system will only try to open the program once.
Now, to find out why the program is failing, I advise you to add
2> /file/log
to the end of every command on your script. Doing so would append any error message to a log (/file/log), and analyzing those error messages would be key to find out why the program is misbehaving.
One important note: if your program needs root privileges to run, then it will fail when called via /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart, as this method calls programs without elevated permissions.
This is an old thread but I was having problems getting autostart to start all the tasks listed. After many days I concluded there were one or more "invisible" characters that autostart didn't like. So I deleted the lines for the tasks that didn't start and retyped them. That solved the problem!
I think I corrupted the lines because I was editing some of the lines on my Windows computer. It was likely inserting CR with LF or some other stuff. I WILL NEVER EDIT TEXT FOR LINUX USING WINDOWS!
Maybe someone else will hit this problem and this may help them. I don't know where else to put this information.

get userinput from bash script (executed by cron or udev)

When I run a bash script from udev or cron, it usually runs quietly somewhere in the background. Example could be plugging in an external harddrive runs rsync for data backup. So not every time I plug in the harddrive do I want to launch this action.
What is the most minimal way to fire up some user input dialog and ask yes or no? I could write some interface with PyQt but I want as little dependencies as possible, ideally cross window manager and maybe even without window manager.

I'm currently leaning towards zenity, only trouble is it pulls in a whole array of gtk dependencies on kde, but is cross platform and works on windows. In essence, this is exaclty what I was looking for:

But was hoping it would be a lot lighter on the resources / dependencies. Any alternative suggestions?
A simple approach would be for the automated script to simply email you, or perhaps alert with wall with instructions (containing the location of the real script).
Another approach would be for the automated script to touch a file in /var/lib and proceed if the file is still present after 5 minutes. This gives the user the option to stop the process (by removing the file), but maintains some automation.
This is not something you should have cron or udev handling in the first place. Write a userland daemon that listens for the appropriate D-Bus messages and performs the appropriate actions.
This should be post in linux or superuser or serverfault.

How to track file creation and modification

We have put together a perl script that essentially looks at the argument that is being passed to it checks if is creating or modifying a file then it saves that in a mysql database so that it is easily accessible later. Here is the interesting part, how do I make this perl script run before all of the commands typed in the terminal. I need to make this dummy proof so people don't forget to run it.
Sorry I didn't formulate this question properly. What I want to do is prepend to each command such that each command will run like so "./run.pl ls" for example. That way I can track file changes if the command is mv or it creates an out file for example. The script pretty much takes care of that but I just don't know how to run it seamlessly to the user.
I am running ubuntu server with the bash terminal.

If I understood correctly you need to execute a function before running every command, something similar to preexec and precmd in zsh.
Unfortunately bash doesn't have a native support for this but you can do it using DEBUG trap.
Here is a sample code applying this method.

You can modify the ~/.bashrc file and launch your script there. Do note that each user would (and should) still have the privelege to modify this file, potentially removing the script invocation.
The /etc/bash.bashrc file is system-wide and only changeable by root.
These .bashrcs are executed when a new instance of bash is created (e.g. new terminal).
It is not the same as sh, the system shell, that is dash on Ubuntu systems.

Check from within bash script that autocompletion is initialized

I'm looking for a method to check from within my shell script that script specific completion have been initialized by user using complete -F ...
I want this check to print out an advice on how to initialize the completion like:
Warning: Auto completion is not initialized. Please run : source ....; complete -F ...
The problem is that the script,being run in a sub-shell has no information about "complete" environment of the parent shell where user is working.
So complete -p| grep my-script-name never return any result.
User is expected to run "source" and "complete" commands or add them into his .bashrc manually, because we're working on a server where we have no access to the bash completion system directory.
Alternatively if you know a method of initializing(and not only checking) the auto-complete from within the script, I would happily accept it.
The only way your script can have access to such information for the parent shell is if it is included instead of executed as a sub-shell. Rather than instructing your users they can include some configuration, you can design your script so it works whether it is run or included.
Then you can simply inform your users that if they want completion enabled they need to include your script rather than run it as an executable script (with instuctions to use source or . as you wish).
However, in this case, I would be inclined to either add this information in documentation or add it into a banner which is always displayed (but can be disabled with an option switch like -q), rather than support two modes of running the script (since the gain is so small).
Either you want every user to use bash completion (which I don't think is good, for example I prefer to have it turned off), or let users decide themselves, but having them this message printed out on each TABTAB is a threat, don't you think?
I'd put into /etc/bash.bashrc what you think every user should run.

Launch multiple scripted screen sessions from another script

I've written a script (that doesn't work) that looks something like this:

screen -dmS "somename" $HOME/somescript.sh
j=13
for i in {0..5}; do
screen -dmS "name$i" $HOME/anotherscript.sh $i $j
j=10
done
If I copy and paste this into a terminal, it creates 7 detached screen sessions, as I expect. If I run it from within a script, however, I get only the first session, "somename," when I run screen -ls.
I realize screen can be used to create multiple windows within one session. It doesn't really matter to me how these scripts get run. I just want to get to the bottom of why this doesn't work as a script.
Note: I've asked this question on SuperUser without any suitable responses. I figured maybe that's the wrong place to ask what could be considered a programming question.
One thing you might be getting bitten on is which specific version of which specific shell you're running. /bin/sh could actually be bash, or it could be bourne, and that can make a difference on how your loop syntax is interpreted. The {0..5} construct isn't understood in older versions of bash (v2.x), for instance, nor in bourne (at least it wasn't when I finally managed to track down a /bin/sh that was a real, live bourne shell :-).
My suggestion is to change your shebang line to /bin/bash if you need its syntax, and check that your bash is version 3.x or later. Since you say it works from the commandline, my bet is on the shebang line, though.
