I am trying to install python2.7 over given python2.6 on a web server. I am stuck at the last step trying to link new python install over the old one.
The steps I have done:
Downloaded and extracted Python 2.7
configured with --prefix=$HOME/.local
make install
What I don't get is how to link by making changes in .bashrc (and what changes to make). I looked over all the places but most the answers are not generic.
Also, I have to install couple of other lovely python stuff, like pip virtualenv, django, nltk over this. A little help on that would be too great.
Ok, without root privileges you will have to have all the python stuff and your code in your home folder. And also you won't be able to configure your nginx/apache/whatever http server you use. Does not seem like a good idea for production, but for development - sure, why not.
This means you will need to install python in your home folder. You can download and compile, but probably the simplest way to do so is pyenv - https://github.com/yyuu/pyenv. Some reading is required to understand its concepts, but it is much simpler than fiddling with manual compiling if you are not sure what you're doing.
Also it kinda replaces virtualenv, but you can still have it if you want. And of course, it all works with your non-root user. There is an installer that doesn't require root either.

Today I turned on my Ubuntu virtual machine and tried to do a project in Python 3.9.4,
but this one used rarfile module. Which is throwing errors.
I know rarfile uses unrar, and I installed both rarfile and unrar.
Tried to type unrar seperately and it works.
I almost spent whole day trying to figure this out.
My question is why does importing rarfile module not work, and how can I fix it.
I also read online it could have something to do with PATH, but I am pretty new to linux and don't know terminology of it and therefore don't know how to try to fix it.
Some information regarding that would probably help if not now, for the future problems regardless if it is connected to this problem or not.
Sorry if I formatted this post poorly, it's my 2nd post on here.
I would do pip install rarfile to make sure it is install
also you may want to do a pip list to make sure its intalled.
Also if python 2 is install then most likly you need to do pip3 install rarfile.
I need libv8-3.14 to run some R packages on linux, but I don't have root access/sudo access on the linux computer I'm using so I'd like to install an external folder instance of libv8-3.14. I've seen R packages reference this as external as CDFLAG="folder/v8-3.14" so I know it is possible.
I'm new(ish) to linux but I've installed external libraries before with tar.gz files which then have a configure file in them, which I set the external folder with ./configure --prefix==/folder/loc, but the only downloads I can find of libv8 are .git (which I can't get to work either).
How can I install an libv8-3.14 to a folder and install so I can set:
export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/install/
and
export `LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/path/to/install/`
I had the exact same problem. In case somebody in the future comes across this post, I will leave my suggestions and how it worked out in the end. Also, all credits go to an experienced colleague of mine.
The most sure thing to do is to consult IT, or someone who has already had the same problem, there is usually a workaround these issues.
A way you can do it yourself:
Create an anaconda environment, you can name it 'V8' or something (make sure the environment is based on the latest python version, or recent enough for r-v8).
activate it
install the conda version of the V8 R interface with conda install -c conda-forge r-v8
That's it. Whenever you need V8, fire up your environment beforehand, and it should be A-OK.
Further advice: If you run into errors when installing r-v8, it may be a good idea to update your conda and all the packages. However, depending on your conda version conda update conda and conda upgrade --all MAY BREAK your conda installation, so be careful. (For further information on this problem, see the endless complaints of people in this issue: https://github.com/conda/conda/issues/8920).
V8 doesn't use autotools, so it has no ./configure. In fact, it provides no installation facilities at all, because it is meant for embedding, not installing.
What I would try is to download the Ubuntu package (guessing from your other question, you are on Ubuntu, right?) for the right architecture from https://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/libv8-3.14.5, and extracting it manually. .deb files are just ZIP archives.
As a side note, there's no point in setting PATH, because libv8, being a library, provides no executables. LD_LIBRARY_PATH is all you need.
From the research I did for the topic, I saw some recommendations to install tty.js with npm, but it wouldn't install as well - some sort of python exe missing from the system error.
I am able to run the program from Git CMD but it is all confusing for me because I am familiar with unix based consoles :(
The way I installed node.js and npm : All was doen with the installer provided by node.js.
Any insights? Thank you in advance!
I have installed tty.js in a linux enviroment and it works great, you should some building essentials installed, such as:
gcc
g++
make
As well as Python 2.7. When installing using npm, it will look for all the dependencies and as I understand it will compile some C code that does the magic behind the scenes. I haven't tried it on Windows, but what I have seen there is the C code designed for windows, so it probably will run.
Maybe I will be of more help if you copy what you get on the npm installation.
have you tried using Git Bash? That is what I used for the most part as well and acts more unix like. If you're on a PC, an alternative is using ConEMU as they give you a shell that is unix like. Just wanted to give you some options if you're still running into trouble, I know this is super late :)
ok, so I have researched the other topics on this, but I still can't get this thing to work, and I'm sure its something small I'm overlooking.
I have my python script running on my local host as a web service.
I have my postgresql instance running on my local host with a specific port, and a database created with a table that has data.
All I want to do is utilize psycopg2 to connect to my database from the python script. Should be pretty simple.
Now, as I understand it, I should be able to just download the psycopg2 file, run the setup, and move on from there.
Could someone PLEASE point me in the direction of how to do this? The python setup.py build and/or install command results in permission denied, which is just odd. I ran it with sudo, and again, same thing.
This is the last piece I need to get in place before I can continue working on the application that I was working on.
Have you tried using pip?
pip search psycopg2
if not installed
pip install psycopg2
I am relatively new to the Linux world so forgive this question if it is simple. I have cloned the lessc repo from this url: https://github.com/cloudhead/less.js
However I cannot find a way of installing it. Am I missing something or is there a manual way to install things setup like this. I have encountered this problem several times and would appreciate any input you could offer. Thanks!
You don't have to install lessc with make install.
It is not a binary program, it's a javascript, so you jut have to copy in the correct position of your website.
Unlike programs, which have a specified position where they have to be installed, files that have to be served by webserver do not have an install script, because there's not fixed position in the filesystem where a website is stored.
