This is not quite a programming question, but SAS programmers might still know an answer: It is possible to make SAS save the settings after shutdown, so the window arrangement will be the same after a restart. We have SAS running on a Server but this feature still works.
SAS 9.3 TS Level 1M2 ("Base SAS")
X64_S08R2Windows NT Server-Version
Windows-Version 6.1.7601
After starting SAS there appears an "editor" window at the position where it was before the last SAS-shutdown.
Now the problem is that when opening a second empty editor window (or when I open another SAS program via the SAS menu) this new editor window does NOT appear at the position where I want it to appear -- i.e. at the same place where the first editor window has been aligned to.
Any ideas much appreciated!
I'm not sure if more recent versions of SAS improved on this regard, but in any case, here are a few workarounds:
Use the tilev (SHIFT-F4) and tileh (SHIFT-F3) commands when appropriate. You can minimize unwanted windows and repeat to have only, say, your editor and your log tiled.
Assign wdef commands to keys (F9) for predefined window positions/sizes. For example, I use these (which are ok on a wide screen with docked explorer on -- tweak the values to your needs):
F4: wdef 1 1 100 113
F5: wdef 1 114 100 120
When I open an existing program (or create a new one), I just press F4 so that the wpgm (editor window) uses roughly 2 thirds of the avaiable space. Then if needed, I activate the log and press F5. The editor and the log are now side-by-side as I want them.

When creating an Excel file in Office365 including macros that increase and decrease value in a cell depending if you click up or down arrow causes issues when the sheet isn't perfectly aligned with the rows. This has been verified by Microsoft in case 34137940 as a bug - who suggested to ask the question here and reach out to a developer support team member. The problem is that no matter if I click up or down when a row is "visually splitted" the amount increases in the cell.
So what can I do to make this work as intended? I don't want to wait until Microsoft pushes an update. There has to be a solution for me to be able to disable smooth-scrolling somehow?
There is a temporary solution here to solve this by running the below commands to revert to earlier update - but that is not an option in this case since newer features is used as well.
cd %programfiles%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ClickToRun\
OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.14701.20262
I also tried disabling smooth scrolling in Windows 10 (Link), following the below steps - with no success.
Navigate to System Properties by right clicking **Properties **from my computer.
Click on Advanced and click on Performance settings.
In Visual Effects tab of Performance Options window, click Custom. Then deselect the following items to Disable some unnecessary eye candy:
Uncheck Smooth-scroll list boxes.
If I split the IDE into 2 sides, the tab list is duplicated. Is there any way to hide the one in the middle of the screen, to save space and make it easier to compare the 2 files?
Sure. I can see a few possible options actually.
1. Use more appropriate Compare Files functionality: look for Compare with... action in the context menu.
For example:
Locate and select 2 files in the Project View, use context menu and choose Compare Files action.
... or select one file and use Compare with... -- now point to the 2nd file via file chooser dialog.
... or copy contents of one of the files into the Clipboard and then use Compare with Clipboard... in your Editor context menu (currently opened file).
NOTE: You can edit/merge files in Differences Viewer screen; when you exit it the changes will remain until auto-save or manual Save is called.
2. Do not display list of the opened tabs on the right side: put it at the top/bottom or temporarily hide it completely (until you are done with your comparing task).
You can change the tabs position quickly at any time via Help | Find Action... (or Search Everywhere via Shift + Shift) and search for tab placement -- it can then be changed right from there without the need to go into the Settings/Preferences screen (use the appropriate ON/OFF toggle).
I have a cell in my spreadsheet that has a hyperlink to a script file (AutoHotKey) and I'd like to be able to launch said script by clicking on the cell in Excel. It works but I'm always presented with a warning:
Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. Would you like to open this file?"
I've done everything I can think of in the Trust Center to get it to allow me to open this file without having to confirm it.
Is there something in the Trust Center, or a bit of VBA, that I could use to allow access to this file (and others like it) without having to confirm my selection every time?
This solution should also work for newer Excel versions (e.g. 365)
Download Procmon:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/processmonitor.aspx
Run Procmon.exe
Toggle Capture Events to off (File > Capture Events)
Clear the current events (Edit > Clear Display)
Toggle Capture Events on.
Click the desired hyperlink in Excel.
Turn Capture Events off.
Filter by Process=EXCEL.EXE (Filter > Filter ..) and click add
Filter also by Operation=RegQueryValue and Result=NAME NOT FOUND
Find the first entry with EditFlags in the path (use the search icon to search the filtered list)
Right click on that entry and select > Jump to (opens registry)
9 Add a new DWORD type named EditFlags with the hexadecimal value 10000.
In my case it was the key htmlfile_FullWindowEmbed

Is there a way to change the color of a tab (in the tab bar) according to the path of the file?
I tried with the PythonScript plugin, but couldn't find a method to change the color of a tab.
I need this because I edit scripts from two environments at the same time, from a LIVE environment, and from a development environment, and I need to be extra careful when editing a LIVE file.
I was looking for a programmatic way to change the color of the tabs, and reviewed the online documentation of Notepad++ but did not find anything about it. So, instead, I propose the following method for your case, it could be helpful to always know which of your files are from the development environment and which from the live environment:
Open a blank instance of Notepad++:
Now start a macro recording: Press Start Recording button on Notepad++ toolbar:
Open a new document
Now you'll have two open blank tabs.
Right click newly open tab and click in option Move to other view from contextual menu
You'll have a window splitted vertically and your two tabs will be displayed next to each other. You'll use these two tabs as separated "containers" for your files
Press Stop Recording button:
Save your just recorded macro:
assign a keyboard shortcut:
Now you can run that recorded macro (from Macro menu, or invoking keyboard shortcut you assigned), every time you want to work on your two environments.
(Optional) Right click vertical separator between "containers" and click Rotate to right
Now your "containers" will be split horizontally and will be displayed one above the other. Personally, I'd recommend you this layout.
Click on the tab at first "container" and from there, open all your "dev" environment files; and analogously open all your "live" environment files from second "container". Note that currently selected container has a more intensely coloured active tab.
If you notice that your working space is small, drag the separator to increase your current "container" size, but I recommend you not to take it completely towards the end, because it will make difficult to differentiate which of the two "containers" you are working on.
Note: If you, mistakenly opened a file of an environment from the wrong "container" you'll always be able to fix that by dragging the tab and dropping it to the other "container":
So you'll always keep control of what files must be on each container.
That's it. I hope this info will be helpful for you.
About changing the color of the tab (not folder specific).
Notepad++ has a file called stylers.xml, located in the roaming folder or in the program folder. It also depends in the installation & windows version. If it does not exists then it is self generated.
At the very end of the file, it says
<WidgetStyle name="Inactive tabs" styleID="0" fgColor="xxxxx" bgColor="xxxxxx" />
And here it is possible to change the color of the inactive tab.
However, it does not work, it is a bug that has been "fixed" countless of times in the past. To the date, the current version 6.2.3 UNICODE, changing the values does nothing.
So far, editing the stylers.xml:
6.2.3 = does nothing
design guideline, gray + gray = not good.
6.2.0 = does nothing
6.1.8 = works.
Nice contrast
6.1 = works.
5.9.8 = works.
5.7 = edit works.
ps: sadly,it is not possible to change the fonts of the tabs.
Wanted to add this as a comment, the button's not there.
You can solve your actual problem by using multiple instances of notepad++, refer this. You can save different sessions and optionally use the "Open File In Solution (OFIS)" plug-in.
I've if you've picked a different Style like 'Black Board', then you will have to change these setting in it's .XML in '/themes', and these setting are found at the bottom of the file.
I have an application that sends the focus to other windows but those windows then don't automatically display themselves in the foreground, i.e. on top of all the other windows. Where can I configure the preferences of my window manager so that this is the default behaviour?
In particular I'm using the Ctrl-0 and Ctrl-Shft-0 shortcuts in the MATLAB IDE to move between the command window and the editor window and although the focus seems to be transferred the new window doesn't automatically redraw itself in the foreground.
Not sure of a key binding off hand that does it, but if you alt-click on a window (which allows you to drag a window) it should come to the front.
As codeDr suggests, MATLAB is also kind of bad about repainting its windows. If you draw to a figure while code is executing, the figure does not update unless you execute drawnow or have some similar pause in the execution to allow the GUI to repaint. Since we're talking about MATLAB, the figure command will also cause the indicated figure to come to the front (in fact, it's harder to get it to not come to the front). So you could do figure(gcf) to bring the current figure to the front, or save the figure number with h = figure; and then later do figure(h). Incidentally, if you want to switch current figures without switching focus, set(0, 'CurrentFigure', h) should set h to the current figure.
Your window manager (probably Metacity?) implements focus-stealing prevention so that rogue apps don't pop up windows that would disturb your typing. Matlab needs to raise its window, and give it the input focus with the correct timestamp. If this is being done from a KeyPress event handler, the timestamp for setting the input focus would be the timestamp from the KeyPress event (i.e. the timestamp of the user-generated event that caused a window to be raised/focused).
To politely give the input focus to a window, google for _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW.
Usually when the window doesn't repaint, it means that the application's main application loop isn't running to refresh the window. Could it be that Matlab is doing some computation or disk activity when you are switching between windows?
