Rewriting url's with .htaccess - .htaccess

I am trying to rewrite page URL's with .htaccess.
I would like to transform links like this (mysite.com/page.php -> mysite.com/page)
This is the code which I've used in previous sites with the same requirements
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond /%{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
RewriteRule ^([a-zA-Z0-9_-\s]+)/$ /$1.php
But when I try to access mysite.com/page it leeds to a 404 page where as mysite.com/page.php will show the page.
Can anyone explain if I have missed a setting somewhere? I have placed the .htaccess file in the site root dir and the permissions are set as 644.

Instead of using %{REQUEST_FILENAME} which by the way you have an unneeded / there, I suggest you to use %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/$1\.php, here is an example:
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
## To internally redirect /anything to /anything.php
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/$1\.php -f
RewriteRule ^([^/]+)$ $1.php [L]
Additionally on your rule you have /$ which would again cause you trouble as you want to catch /page.
You could have made it /? to make the / optional.
Your .htaccess fixed should look like this:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^([a-z0-9_-\s]+)/?$ /$1.php [NC,L]

Understanding my .htaccess file in order to rewrite X to X.php

I have a website of PHP files that I'm hosting on SiteGround.com and want the links to look like "example.com/about" instead of "example.com/about.php". I also want my index.php to be loaded when I visit "example.com" instead of "example.com/index"
So I did some searching and this is what I want:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php
But the webserver already has a default .htaccess file which has this:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
Okay...so I tried to piece together what it is doing. Based on my understanding, it enables the RewriteEngine, then sets RewriteBase to be /. It then sets a rule looking for index.php and if it finds it, it doesn't check any other rule.
Otherwise, it falls through and checks if a string is not a file and not a directory and contains a .php extension, it redirects the root to index.php and stops.
So, I tried adding my three lines to the end of block right before the closing </IfModule> tag and it didn't quite work. Can anyone help me out?
EDIT
I modified my .htaccess file:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php
</IfModule>
In my HTML, I have:
<a href="about" .... ></a> <!-- link to about.php -->
<a href="/" ....></a> <!-- link to index.php -->
Is that right? It doesn't seem to work for me.
First of all, the line:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
Is not part of the original .htaccess file. It can't be, it makes no sense where it is, perhaps you added it yourself while experimenting.
The .htaccess file you have there, other than that line, is a standard method of putting everything through index.php. Probably for WordPress. So you need to decide what you want to do. Do you want to put everything through index.php, or do you want to use separate .php files with the extension added on the server side? Or do you want to do both? (in which case a combined approach needs writing) Are you still using WordPress? Perhaps you can just remove those rules.
Let me know and I can update the answer if you need more info.
Update
Your rules can be modified to:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !\.php$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php [L,NE]
That should fix it, I think the \. on the REQUEST_FILENAME line was breaking it, the rest are improvements.
If that's not working then perhaps mod_rewrite isn't enabled, or .htaccess files are not enabled. You can test it by putting some garbage on a line and see if you get a 500 error.
If the root doesn't serve index.php then you just need to add a DirectoryIndex.

Rewrite rule not working as expected?

I have a URL with a parameter which I wish to make into sef URL:
want:
http://map.tautktiv.com/street.php?address=abc
to become:
http://map.tautktiv.com/street/address/abc
or
http://map.tautktiv.com/address/abc
have tried several online tools to generate a .htaccess rule, but none of them have any effect on the URL, .htaccess file is active (tried to put some gibberish in it and got error 500)
these are the rules I tried:
1.
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^address-([^-]*)$ /street.php?address=$1 [L]
RewriteRule street/address/(.*) street.php?address=$1
2.
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule /address/(.*)\.php street.php?address=$1
3.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# add whatever other special conditions you need here
RewriteRule ^/([0-9]+)-(.*)$ /street.php?address=$1 [L]
RewriteRule /(.*)/(.*)/$ street.php?address=$1
the site is a sub-domain which files reside in a sub directory in a shared hosting GoDaddy server, have also tried to apply these rules to the .htaccess in the directory above it, same result.
tried also this per below suggestions
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^street/address/(.*)$ street.php?address=$1 [r=301,L]
RewriteRule ^address/(.*)$ street.php?address=$1 [r=301,L]
RewriteRule ^street/address/(.*)$ street.php?address=$1 [r=301,L]
same result, nothing happens.
tried to go directly to page from main domain but same result:
http://tautktiv.com/map/streets/street.php?address=abc
First rule will redirect your ugly URL to the pretty URL.
Second rule will internally redirect it back so the user will not see the ugly URL.
Options +FollowSymLinks -MultiViews
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
# Internally forward /street/address/abc to /street.php?address=abc
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^street/address/(.*)/?$ /street.php?address=$1 [NC,L]
# Internally forward /address/abc to /street.php?address=abc
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^address/(.*)/?$ /street.php?address=$1 [NC,L]
If you confirm the rule to be working as expected then you can change it from 302 to 301 as you do not want to use 301 until you know the rule is working as expected.
The .htaccess should go inside the folder where street.php is located.
HTTP is US ASCII so your language would fail, it will redirect it to something like this:
/street/address/%25D7%2590%2520%25D7%2598%25D7%2591%25D7%25A8%25D7%2599%2520%25D7%2599%25D7%25A8%25D7%2595%25D7%25A9%25D7%259C%25D7%2599%25D7%259D%2520%25D7%2599%25D7%25A9%25D7%25A8%25D7%2590%25D7%259C
Your best bet here would be to change the links to use /street/address/word instead of the php file directly.
This way you would not need the first rule and you can use only the internal redirect which would work just fine with this update.
Try this one:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^street/address/(.*)$ street.php?address=$1 [r=301,L]
RewriteRule ^address/(.*)$ street.php?address=$1 [r=301,L]
In your examples you'd missed ^ and $ in the second row of RewriteRule.
And use [r=301,L] instead of [L] to tell the browser, that thzis is premanent redirecting.

.htaccess redirection if file exist

I have a directory structure like this
/ub/
/ub/img/
/ub/inc/
Basically I want to change my img URL to it's parent directory (ub),
When i access http://localhost/ub/mypic.jpg
First, it has to check /ub/img/mypic.jpg, if exist then get that file and pass to the browser, if not then just pass it to http://localhost/ub/index.php?img=mypic.jpg with INTERNAL REDIRECTION.
Second, index.php will create mypic.jpg and store it to /ub/img/, then pass mypic.jpg to the browser.
So, whether the file is exist or not, the browser will only have http://localhost/ub/mypic.jpg as the URL
So far, i have this on my .htaccess file
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/ub/img/$1 -f
RewriteRule .+ /ub/img/$1 [L]
I have 2 days to find out the solution, but, it doesn't seem to work,
Thanks,
EDIT :
Hey, I've got this, The request to http://localhost/ub/app/file.php is already passed to index.php?uri=app/file.php as i expected,
but the request to http://localhost/ub/img/mypic.jpg is not passed to index.php?uri=img/mypic.jpg. Is there any solution?
Options -MultiViews +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /ub/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ([^/]+)$
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}ub/img/%1 -f
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ img/%1 [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ([^/]+)$
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}ub/inc/%1 -f
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ inc/%1 [L]
RewriteRule ^(.+)$ index.php?uri=$1 [QSA,L]
Try something like this (place it in .htaccess in the /ub folder):
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /ub/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ([^/]+\.jpg)$
RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/ub/img/%1 -f
RewriteRule .+ - [L]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?img=$1

php .htaccess rewrite with new cpanel account

I have the following in my .htaccess file, which I do often for cleaner URL's. There are pro's and cons to this I know and I think I've found a con.
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php
Options All -Indexes
I've up a new cPanel account for this website so the URL looks like this:
http://www.example.com/~newuser/
...where example.com is my reseller account and newuser is my client.
The site loads fine but when I click a link http://www.example.com/~newuser/about I get the following error:
The requested URL
/home/newuser/public_html/about.php
was not found on this server.
The problem is, that's exactly the file I want it to display and that is the document root. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Before your RewriteCond lines, add a RewriteBase line like so:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /~newuser/
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php
Options All -Indexes

.htaccess rewrite with REST style URL 500 error

I'm trying to implement a REST-style URL with a mod-rewrite turned on in .htaccess. There's a bit of a kicker which is that I'm developing in a test environment (new cpanel account). Here's the .htaccess:
RewriteEngine on
#REMOVE THIS LINE ON SITE LAUNCH!
RewriteBase /~myNewAccount/
#Hide .php extensions for cleaner URLS
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.php -f
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.php
Options All -Indexes
The URL I CAN use looks like this:
www.example.com/~myNewAccount/index.php/id/50
I can access the PATH_INFO here, but when I try to do this:
www.example.com/~myNewAccount/index/id/50
...I get a 500 internal server error. I've tried implementing the solution found here by Gumbo but that mucks things up.
Ideas on what might be causing this?
Try this rule:
RewriteRule ^index(/.*)?$ index.php$1 [L]
Or if you don’t want index to be in the URL path at all:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule .* index.php/$0 [L]
