Ubuntu Trusty Tahr 14.04
I would like to replicate a feature from a program i used to use in windows. stardock fences allowed me to hide all of the icons (i wanted to) on my desktop by double clicking, and then reveal them by double clicking again.
I believe something along these lines:
gconftool-2 /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop --type bool --set false
from this page (ubuntu forums)
, is what I am looking to do. my question then becomes:
How do I invoke a shell script by double clicking on the EMPTY desktop?
Yes, I know I can use an icon instead. I want the desktop. I don't even have any icons I have to have on the desktop... Oh well. I would think it's possible and I would like to learn how. The feature itself is not the most important, but when I came to the question of HOW and had no answer - that's a problem ;)

I have registered some linux machines intro AD with sssd and it works great, but I have an issue with the bash prompt. Some AD usernames start with $ and the prompt refuses to display it, so now I'm left with the string similar to #servername:~$
If I do an export PS1="\$USER#\H" it gets displayed correctly.
Any ideas on how to make bash prompt either escape the special character, or make sssd edit the bashrc with the "correct" format?
This is more of a Linux configuration question and would work better in unix.stackexchange.com or askubuntu, but generally to change default user configuration you'd want to edit the files in /etc/skel.

Ok so I know it's a weird case but hang in here with me.
So the thing is I've got an very old laptop running ubuntu 14.04 server without any desktop aka shell only. BUT the laptop also has a touch screen so we want to be able to use the "mouse"/touchscreen/touchpad to select text inside the terminal and/or click/copy/paste/cut/etc. It's part of art project with some students and also one of the tasks is to run as less as possible. So running a desktop in the background is not really an option. My question is:
Is there a way to start the Ubuntu terminal as UI application in fullscreen without the actual desktop in the background but giving the functionality of an mouse cursor.
(If someone knows a even better solution for adding a mouse without starting the desktop its appreciated)
Try this: create a ~/.xinitrc with content : exec gnome-terminal, then run startx
Or another solution is to stay in tty and install gpm for mouse control

How to place picture on desktop, on top of wallpaper?
This is for Fedora 26, Gnome 3.24.2
I'm not sure about pictures but maybe you can use conky
Conky can be used to do this. See here: how to install.
Although this software has a lot more options to add additions to your desktop, it will do the trick for images too.
Windows equivalent is Rainmeter.
1 minute too short to answering. See above.

I installed Ubuntu 16.04 yesterday and since then I have a problem with the mouse cursor.
It starts randomly disappearing and flickering a lot mostly when you try to close the window.
I have searched for a solution on Google and here but didn't find anything.
I had the same problem some time back when using ubuntu 14 version. You can fix it manually by going to Open System Settings > Displays. In the Displays window, you will see an Unknown monitor. Click it and disable it.
If you have 2 built in display in red and green color.. Disabling the green built in display will solve the issue.

I am using ThunderBird 11.0.1 on Linux. How do I remove tooltip messages? I do not want tooltip hints at all. I looked at preferences and see nothing there.
Go to Options → Advanced → Config Editor. Then set browser.chrome.toolbar_tips to false.
You could get the source, remove the tooltips, compile your own version. Ok, my answer is a bit flip. But at least it's possible.
Did you try this link? Thunderbird Settings
Might be worth trying the setting from FireFox in the prefs.js...long shot but...if you want it worth a try.
The config editor is easy! Under MacOS it is Preferences -> Config Editor...
