How to submit Apache Spark job to Hadoop YARN on Azure HDInsight - azure

I am very excited that HDInsight switched to Hadoop version 2, which supports Apache Spark through YARN. Apache Spark is a much better fitting parallel programming paradigm than MapReduce for the task that I want to perform.
I was unable to find any documentation however on how to do remote job submission of a Apache Spark job to my HDInsight cluster. For remote job submission of standard MapReduce jobs I know that there are several REST endpoints like Templeton and Oozie. But as for as I was able to find, running Spark jobs is not possible through Templeton. I did find it to be possible to incorporate Spark jobs into Oozie, but I've read that this is a very tedious thing to do and also I've read some reports of job failure detection not working in this case.
Probably there must be a more appropriate way to submit Spark jobs. Does anyone know how to do remote job submissions of Apache Spark jobs to HDInsight?

You can install spark on a hdinsight cluster. You have to do it at by creating a custom cluster and adding an action script that will install Spark on the cluster at the time it creates the VMs for the Cluster.
To install with an action script on cluster install is pretty easy, you can do it in C# or powershell by adding a few lines of code to a standard custom create cluster script/program.

you can then RDP into the headnode and run use the spark-shell or use spark-submit to run jobs. I am not sure how would run spark job and not rdp into the the headnode but that is an other question.

I also asked the same question with Azure guys. Following is the solution from them:

Currently, this functionality is not supported. One workaround is to build job submission web service yourself:
Create Scala web service that will use Spark APIs to start jobs on the cluster.
Host this web service in the VM inside the same VNet as the cluster.
Expose web service end-point externally through some authentication scheme. You can also employ intermediate map reduce job, it would take longer though.

You might consider using Brisk (https://brisk.elastatools.com) which offers Spark on Azure as a provisioned service (with support available). There's a free tier and it lets you access blob storage with a wasb://path/to/files just like HDInsight.
It doesn't sit on YARN; instead it is a lightweight and Azure oriented distribution of Spark.

Spark job as a web service?

A peer of mine has created code that opens a restful api web service within an interactive spark job. The intent of our company is to use his code as a means of extracting data from various datasources. He can get it to work on his machine with a local instance of spark. He insists that this is a good idea and it is my job as DevOps to implement it with Azure Databricks.
As I understand it interactive jobs are for one-time analytics inquiries and for the development of non-interactive jobs to be run solely as ETL/ELT work between data sources. There is of course the added problem of determining the endpoint for the service binding within the spark cluster.
But I'm new to spark and I have scarcely delved into the mountain of documentation that exists for all the implementations of spark. Is what he's trying to do a good idea? Is it even possible?
The web-service would need to act as a Spark Driver. Just like you'd run spark-shell, run some commands , and then use collect() methods to bring all data to be shown in the local environment, that all runs in a singular JVM environment. It would submit executors to a remote Spark cluster, then bring the data back over the network. Apache Livy is one existing implementation for a REST Spark submission server.
It can be done, but depending on the process, it would be very asynchronous, and it is not suggested for large datasets, which Spark is meant for. Depending on the data that you need (e.g. highly using SparkSQL), it'd be better to query a database directly.

Run parallel jobs on-prem dynamic spark clusters

I am new to spark, And we have a requirement to set up a dynamic spark cluster to run multiple jobs. by referring to some articles, we can achieve this by using EMR (Amazon) service.
Is there any way to the same setup that can be done locally?
Once Spark clusters are available with services running on different ports on different servers, how to point mist to new spark cluster for each job.

Yes, you can use a Standalone cluster that Spark provides where you can set up Spark Cluster (master nodes and slave nodes). There are also docker containers that can be used to achieve that. Take a look here.
Other options it will be to take and deploy locally Hadoop ecosystems, like MapR, Hortonworks, Cloudera.

How to run a Spark Standalone master on Kubernetes that will use the Kubernetes Cluser Manager to start workers

I have an application that currently uses Standalone Mode locally to use spark functionality via the SparkContext. We are not using spark-submit to upload our jobs, we are running our application in a container on kubernetes so we would like to take advantage of the dynamic scheduling that kubernetes provides to run the jobs.
We started out looking for a helm chart to create stand alone cluster running on kubernetes similar to how you would have run a standalone cluster on machines ( vms or actual machines ) a few years ago and came across the following

very old instances of spark
not using the containers provided by spark
this setup wastes a bunch of resources if you need to have large worker nodes reserved and running all the time regardless of your need

Doesn't support the way we interact with spark, takes the approach that all the apps are standalone apps that are pushed to the cluster to run

Along this journey we discovered that spark now supports a kubernetes cluster manager ( similar to the way it does with yarn, mesos ) so we are looking that this might be the best approach, but this still does not provide a standalone master that would allow for the in memory caching. I have looked to see if there was a way that I could get the org.apache.spark.deploy.master.Master to start and use the
org.apache.spark.scheduler.cluster.k8s.KubernetesClusterManager
So I guess what I'm trying to ask is does anyone have any experience in trying to run a Standalone Master, that would use the kubernetes backend such as "KubernetesClusterManager" in order to have the worker nodes dynamically created as pods and running executors while having a permanent Standalone Master that would allow a SparkContext to connect to it remotely in client mode.

How to deploy spark job to EMR yarn cluster from Jenkins?

I have several spark jobs on a EMR cluster using yarn that must run on a regular basis and are submitted from Jenkins. Currently the Jenkins machine will ssh into the master node on EMR where a copy of the code is ready in a folder to be executed. I would like to be able to clone my repo into the jenkins workspace and submit the code from Jenkins to be executed on the cluster. Is there a simple way to do this? What is the best way to deploy spark from Jenkins?
You can use this rest api to call http requests from Jenkins to Start/Stop the jobs
If you have Python in Jenkins, implement script using Boto3 is a good, easy, flexible and powerful option.
You can manage EMR (So Spark) creating the full cluster or adding jobs to an existing one.
Also, using the same library, you can manage all AWS services.

How do you install custom software on worker nodes in Azure HDInsight?

I have created an Azure HDInsight cluster using PowerShell. Now I need to install some custom software on the worker nodes that is required for the mappers I will be running using Hadoop streaming. I haven't found any PowerShell command that could help me with this task. I can prepare a custom job that will setup all the workers, but I'm not convinced that this is the best solution. Are there better options?

With AWS Elastic MapReduce there is an option to install additional software in a bootstrap action that is defined when you create a cluster. I was looking for something similar.
You can use a bootstrap action to install additional software and to change the configuration of applications on the cluster. Bootstrap actions are scripts that are run on the cluster nodes when Amazon EMR launches the cluster. They run before Hadoop starts and before the node begins processing data.

The short answer is that you don't. It's not ideal from a caching perspective, but you ought to be able to bundle all your job dependencies into the map reduce jar which is distributed across the cluster for you by YARN (part of Hadoop). This is broadly speaking transparent to the end user, as it's all handled through the job submission process.
If you need something large which is a shared dependency across many jobs, and you don't want it copied out every time, you can keep it on wasb:// storage, and reference that in a class path, but that might cause you complexity if you are for instance using the .NET Streaming API.
I've just heard from a collage that I need to update my Azure PS because recently a new Cmdlet Add-AzureHDInsightScriptAction was added and it does just that.
