I have been trying to create a device simulator for SyncML. Input would be DevInf information, using which some test cases have to be run.
Been searching on the net for quite some time now, even tried funambol and syncevo, but could not acheive this. Funambol has no support, so dropped it. Code does not compile. Inactive.
Syncevo is quite good, command line based. But is very tightly coupled with the base and hacking the devinf is not a simple task.
Can you suggest a way of implementing this, i am out of ideas now.

In the chatbase UI, when I try to filter by a specific platform, there are a large number of platforms that don't mean anything to me. There is no way I can find to remove/clean up these platforms.
Tried reaching out to chatbase support, but they are unresponsive.

I'm looking for a way to output traces to a log file in my code, which runs on linux.
I don't want to include the printing information in the binary, in every place I deploy it.
It windows, I simply used WPP to trace without putting the actual traces strings in my binary.
How can this by achieved in Linux?
I'm not very familiar with Linux tools in this area, so maybe there is a better system. However, since nobody else has made any good suggestions, I'll make a suggestion. (Probably not a very good suggestion, but the best I can think of right now.)
In theory, you could continue to use wpp. Wpp is simply a template system. It scans the configuration and input files to create data structures. Then it runs a template, fills in the data values it got from the scan, producing the tmh files. You could create a new set of templates that would use Linux apis instead of Windows apis, and would record the message strings in a way that works with some other log decoder system.
I noticed this question only now and would like to add my two cents to the story just for a case. Personally, I truly appreciate Windows WPP Tracing and consider it probably the best engineering solution for practical development troubleshooting among similar tools.
It happened I extended WPP use to Unix-like platforms twice. We wanted to use strong sides of WPP concept in general and yet use it in a multi-platform pieces of code. This was not a porting but rather a wrapper to specific WPP use we configured on Windows. One time we had a web service to perform actual WPP pre-processing on Windows; it may sound a bit insane but it worked fine and effective within the local network. A wrapper script that was executed before each compilation sent a web request, got a processed file and post-processed the generated include file to make it suitable for Unix-like platforms. The second time we implemented a simplified WPP pre-processor of our own (we found yet additional use for it - we could generate the tracing statements differently for production and unit testing, for example). This was a harsh solution: you anyway need to use some physical tracing framework behind the wrapper on non-Windows platform (well, the first time we apparently implemented our own lower level).
I do not think the Linux world has a framework comparable to WPP. Once I even thought it could be a great idea to make an open source porting project for WPP. I am not sure it would be much requested though. I said it is a great engineering solution. But who wants to do dirty engineering work? Open source community prefer abstract object-oriented and generic solutions, streaming and less necessity in corresponding tools (WPP requires special management tools and OS support).Ease of code writing is the today's choice.
There could be Microsoft fault (or unwillingness) in the lack of WPP popularity too. They kept it as an internal framework that came out just by a case with Windows DDK because they have to offer some logging/tracing solution for driver developers. Nobody even noticed much that WPP is well suitable for the user-space code too. And WPP pre-processor for C#, for example, has never been exposed to public at all.
Nevertheless, I still think that WPP porting to Unix/Linux work can be a challenging, interesting and maybe even useful attempt. If someone decides to lead it. :)
I wanted to know if anyone has been using AirBnB Rendr and is it stable and ok to use in commercial projects or is it still changing a lot?
I'm developing a website which can run both client and server based, this mean I need to be able to render pages and widgets server and client based.
The server is running Node.js, dust.js and has custom server based code to render the pages and widgets on the server side. I need to pick how to handle it on the client side.
Naturally I want to try and not repeat code, but obviously the client is different I can:
Keep my current page based server rendering and develop custom
client side code.
Use backbone.js on client side and keep my server based code the
same.
Use AirBnB rendr that is based on Node.js and backbone to use the
same code on client and o server. AirBnB Rendr Library
I like the 3rd idea very much, but I'm looking for some input from you guys.
Has anyone used it? any experience with it in terms of stability and/or how often their api changes etc?
I've just started playing around with Rendr. If I ignore the learning curve and oboarding friction, I like it a lot and I plan to write my next large production app using Rendr.
Unfortunately, as bababa listed above, the documentation needs a lot of work. There is an explanation of how Rendr works in its README and the example app's README but beyond that you'll need to source dive in order to figure out how the gears are turning. Currently, there is no forum for questions (other than stack overflow :D) and I've had a hard time figuring out its idioms on my own.
Despite all the struggles, I finally see the light and I'm starting to understand why Rendr is so powerful.
tl;dr - If you're willing to source dive and figure out your own workflow, I would suggest using Rendr. Otherwise, I would recommend going old school by writing a traditional client app with a more mature library. (is it too early to say that? =X)
Well given AirBnb is a successful commercial enterprise, there's some validation that the library works well enough for them. This question is probably best answered by watching their github commit log for breaking changes. Given backbone is 1.0 and essentially stable at this point, rendr will probably quickly stabilize, but honestly your fear of instability is probably unjustified. I think rendr looks compelling and although my current project is using a very similar home-grown solution, I would consider using rendr in a future project or even porting our code to rendr. "Stability" per say is much less important to the web development community compared to other situations like packaged or embedded software.
I used (tried to use) and Rendr on a project and gave up. There are just to many limitations (currently) and the lack of documentation doesn't help. I ended up need to rewrite the source code to accomplish some things I would consider trivial with other frameworks, such as passing multiple collections to a view. It just wasn't possible (at the time I used it) and that was a deal breaker. Not being able to pass a collection of categories and results to a page was to much of a limitation.
I have no doubt it will eventually be ready for production use, but right now I would say unless you are an engineer at AirBnb and know how to hack the source then no, it's not ready.
If you really want to know if it will work for your needs, take a look at the issue list on github. That will give you a good idea where the projects at.
I've been using the MonoTorrent library for a couple of weeks now and am looking for any kind of feedback or recommended alternatives.
The only issue I have with the library so far is that it is MUCH slower than uTorrent, I am not sure if this is a configuration issue or whether it doesnt support a required feature etc, but I require higher speeds for my needs and I found that for the exact same file I can get a major difference (times 100) in terms of the numbers of seeders and speeds.
I wanted to give libtorrent a try as well but have not been able to even compile the windows dll, let alone write the required code to use it :-)
I probably don't know much about the history of the torrent protocol but found it strange to find so little support in the C#/.Net world.
Was even considering wrapping the uTorrent client somehow, but it might be 'frowned upon' lol
Ended up using the libtorrent C++ library (running on a seperate process with added REST api to communicate with the main program) it works well and the torrent performance is excellent.

A very simple question I would really appreciate input from others (I think we all could) who are either wondering the same or have decided to go with it (if so, any user experiences shared would be great).
I have 2 main issues which seem common on stackoverflow and on various blogs, so I know I'm not the only person experiencing them.
Occasionally my sync gets corrupted for one reason or another and the sync either fails on certain data or fails to sync altogether.
Pre populating data is essential for my app, there's no reliable way of doing this (without asking the user - which isn't reliable)
I've seen many good work arounds to both these issues but I can't help feeling that my users will encounter problems still.
I'd be really interested to learn of any experiences particularly from those that have decided to publish using iCloud and Core-Data.
iCloud has been around a while now but even on iOS 5.1.1 it doesn't seem stable enough, surely a more reliable version can't be too far away.
It is hard to answer this one without "Making statements based on opinion", but it's one worth giving partially backed up opinions on to hopefully save others some time and frustration.
My opinion is that it's just not ready. I unfortunately have an app in the wild at the moment based around CoreData + iCloud and even though we danced around a number of iCloud bugs to finally get it stable enough to pass reasonably thorough testing some users are still running into the corrupted sync states. I've spent a healthy portion of my recent life trying to make it work and am currently reluctantly reimplementing the app without Core Data. I really hope that it stabilizes soon as I genuinely like most of it.
