I'm trying to install GCC in my Debian but when I execute ./contrib/download_prerequisites command, I receive a "Forbidden" error, indicating that I'm not allowed to retrieve one or more packages from its resources due to proxy restrictions.
I'm not able to bypass proxy neither contact administrator in order to get permission. So, I'd like to download a complete set of GCC packages, if available. Unfortunately my Linux is quite spartan and apt-get and aptitude very often don't work due to dependencies issues. So, a tar-gz/bz approach would be fine.
Thanks for helping.
I've managed to setup aptitude to install all the required dependencies. Fortunatelly, these resources weren't blocked by proxy's firewall, and all them could be downloaded. Thanks to aptitude.

This has nothing to do with Azure. It just happens the distro you're on does not have GCC installed. Install with
sudo apt-get install build-essential
or whatever the yum equivalent is for RedHats.
EvilSnobu is right, according to the error message, you should install gcc first.
If you sure you have gcc, and the still can't use command make, you should check your /etc/environment, here are similar case, please refer to the link.
I am running a centOS 7 virtual machine and trying to install an RPM package for Security Center 4.7.1. The yum installer fails to find the install packages for the dependencies libexpat and libreadline, however I do have expat and readline installed. I don't understand this because it seems that the Security Center RPM is looking for packages of the wrong names. This link is a screen shot showing the yum install abort, the lack of installed packages required and the packages I do have installed relevant to the problem...
centOS VM screenshot
Any suggestions on how to remedy this without forcing the install and risking non functionality of Security Center?
The package you are trying to install needs
libexpat.so.0
libreadline.so.5
but your installation has probably (from what I can see)
libexpat.so.2
libreadline.so.6
It will be difficult to install this package; I would recommend you to search for a newer SecurityCenter package.
for experts:
there is probably a way to work around this; if you can manage to install an older libreadline and libexpat rpm side by side with the new ones; but that might be risky because there are probably some conflicts and updates might not run too well...
I need to install Java, Solr, and update Git on this dedicated server.
I have ssh root access and was going to use the apt-get method to install what I need. But says this command is not found. Is this not a core Linux thing? I am guess I need to now look into installing this before doing anything else?
I don't have CPanel access.
This is solved. I did not know there was a different package manager with CentOS and Ubuntu. I used yum and it worked. I will mark this answered once I am able.
I'm using CentOS 4.8 , i386.
I would appreciate if any one can help me to install Gnome (or any other GUI) while there is no yum available.
I tried to install yum but since It's a company's server with many things installed on it,
I faced with many problems.
However I decided to find a way to install Gnome without using yum
And please take note:
I'm a neophyte!
Did you try getting the source-code and building it manually?
You can get the code from
http://www.gnome.org/getting-gnome/
GNOME also provides a build tool to make the installation easier.
But, as it has already been pointed out - Servers are best managed over command line. It will give you more power and control over what you are doing.
ok so I got a dedicated linux server and I'm trying to install node.js
i ran
wget http://nodejs.org/dist/node-v0.4.11.tar.gz
tar zxf node-v0.4.11.tar.gz
cd node-v0.4.11
all is well
then i ran
./configure
and i got
Checking for program g++ or c++ : not found
Checking for program icpc : not found
Checking for program c++ : not found
wscript:232: error: could not configure a cxx compiler!
so i google that error if found a page that says run this
sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev curl git-core
but then i get
-bash: sudo: command not found
please help me I don't know what to do now
If you are running some debian based distro, that code should work. Since you are running CentOS, you can follow this link. Different linux distros use different package managers. It looks like that debian is the most popular (ubuntu, mint, debian...) so many online tutorials you find use apt to get everything installed. Your choice is different and you should use rpm/yum. Since you are missing gcc compiler, you should try executing this command (you should probably add some more packages, not sure):
yum install sudo gcc-c++
EDIT: Updated link to serverfault.com
Actually the error output tells you exactly what's missing: sudo. Quick Googl'ing should reveal what this tools meaning is: It lets you execute commands with root privileges, provided you have access to a user account that's privileged enough to use this functionality.
So you need root privileges to install packages. This is not surprising. If sudo is not installed, you most probably either
are logged in as root, in which you can use apt-get without the sudo in front
are not logged in as root and thus don't have the necessary permissions to install packages. In that case, you are unlucky and you need to talk to the administrator.
UPDATE: From your comment to the other answer I take it that you are running with user privileges and do not have su in your PATH. Do you know the root password? If yes, you can try if /bin/su works. If no, you don't have enough privileges.
