ok so I got a dedicated linux server and I'm trying to install node.js
i ran
wget http://nodejs.org/dist/node-v0.4.11.tar.gz
tar zxf node-v0.4.11.tar.gz
cd node-v0.4.11
all is well
then i ran
./configure
and i got
Checking for program g++ or c++ : not found
Checking for program icpc : not found
Checking for program c++ : not found
wscript:232: error: could not configure a cxx compiler!
so i google that error if found a page that says run this
sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev curl git-core
but then i get
-bash: sudo: command not found
please help me I don't know what to do now
If you are running some debian based distro, that code should work. Since you are running CentOS, you can follow this link. Different linux distros use different package managers. It looks like that debian is the most popular (ubuntu, mint, debian...) so many online tutorials you find use apt to get everything installed. Your choice is different and you should use rpm/yum. Since you are missing gcc compiler, you should try executing this command (you should probably add some more packages, not sure):
yum install sudo gcc-c++

Actually the error output tells you exactly what's missing: sudo. Quick Googl'ing should reveal what this tools meaning is: It lets you execute commands with root privileges, provided you have access to a user account that's privileged enough to use this functionality.
So you need root privileges to install packages. This is not surprising. If sudo is not installed, you most probably either
are logged in as root, in which you can use apt-get without the sudo in front
are not logged in as root and thus don't have the necessary permissions to install packages. In that case, you are unlucky and you need to talk to the administrator.
UPDATE: From your comment to the other answer I take it that you are running with user privileges and do not have su in your PATH. Do you know the root password? If yes, you can try if /bin/su works. If no, you don't have enough privileges.

I have a linux server (completely new, web hosting, nothing is installed into it), and want to use a "wget" command. Currently, it is not found. Kernel version 2.6.32-896.16.1.lve1.4.54.el6.x86_64
I am completely new to linux, tried to solve this issue by myself, but couldn't do it. I log in into this linux server via PuTTY via my Windows OS laptop.

To get "wget" to work, I will need to install it. I guess I will need to install first "sudo" and/or "apt" and/or "apt-get". But couldn't do it. Please give me a short list of steps in which order to install them.
Given your kernel version, it looks like your Linux distribution is CentOS 6 or RHEL 6. Try installing wget with this command:
yum install wget
You must be root when you run this command.
Incase you using Debian version of Linux, use the following:
sudo apt-get install wget
From kernel version, it looks like you are using RHEL/Centos 6.
Please check -

If the mentioned dependencies exist in your system, you can directly fire the rpm command

I am new to Linux (new as in installed it yesterday), I need it for my programming course in the university and I've been told to install specific versions of specific programs, but though I've used apt-get install to install them (having previously done apt-get update) they aren't in the correct version.
The programs that I need are make 4.0 and valgrind 3.10.1.
apt-get installs make 3.81 and valgrind 3.10.0.SVN.
I have tried typing "apt-get install make4.0" and "apt-get install valgrind10.3.1" to no avail. I have downloaded them from the internet and followed what instructions I could understand to install the newer versions but it keeps saying that I have the older ones. (I'm not sure if I can post direct links here, if I can let me know and I'll post where I got them from).
What have I been doing wrong? How can I fix this?
I am currently running Linux Mint.

Due to a long-standing unresolved Debian bug report, GNU Make remained the age-old 3.81 in Debian for a very long time, and as a consequence, in Debian-based distributions such as Ubuntu and Mint.
The latest Debian release, Jessie, has upgraded to 4.0, so Debian-based distributions will have that upgrade. However, it is better to use 4.1.
This has been discussed many times on the GNU Make mailing list and elsewhere.
So to get a newer version, you must compile it from scratch.
This is easy:
Install the required packages (gcc, make and such).
Open up a shell (if you're using the GUI, a terminal window).
Type the following commands (or something equivalent, e.g. you can use curl instead of wget):
cd /tmp
wget http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/make/make-4.1.tar.gz
tar xvf make-4.1.tar.gz
cd make-4.1/
./configure
make
sudo make install
cd ..
rm -rf make-4.1.tar.gz make-4.1
Now, make 4.1 is in /usr/local/bin/make.
You can verify it is there with whereis make.
You can make it your default make by prefixing /usr/local/bin to your $PATH variable in your shell startup file; for instance, in .profile or .bashrc if you use the bash shell.
Don't try to install a self-compiled make (or anything else that doesn't come from the distribution's package manager) into /bin or /usr/bin; doing that will confuse your package manager.
Is there a good way to install latest cmake version from CentOS 6.5?
I'm doing yum install cmake but it's giving me 2.6.4 from base repo which I don't want.
I tried installing cmake28 but the problem is that when I try to do ./configure it throws an error saying cmake is not available.
rpm -Uv ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/Application:/Geo/CentOS_6/x86_64/cmake-3.0.0-143.1.x86_64.rpm

I know this is an ancient question, but I got here by google searching and wanted to share what I knew so far.
when you sudo yum install cmake28, you get a /usr/bin/cmake28 binary on your machine. You can setup a symlink to make your configure script work via the following:
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/cmake28 /usr/bin/cmake
Not sure why the cmake28 package doesn't do this for you.
Well, after looking at the tutorial CMake gives on their website, it says download this and after that you have too type "./bootstrap" followed by "make" and "make install".
If you get any errors type "sudo" in front of all the said commands. If that doesn't work, your best bet would be too login to the root account by typing "su" and the root password following that.
If you already have cmake installed you should either follow the steps cmake offers on their website or try the command "sudo yum remove cmake".
I have R 3.4.1.1 on my computer (Linux).
I want to install R version 2.14.1 since the package Rmosek does not work in newer version.
I have downloaded the R-2.14.2.tar.gz from Cran.
My problem is that I do not understand the INSTALL instructions,
It says to unpack the R sources and go to the top directory and issue the following commands:
./configure
make
I wrote the following in a terminal:
tar -zxvf R-2.14.2.tar.gz
cd Downloads
cd R-2.14.2
./configure
It is run but finally gives the error:
configure: error: --with-x=yes (default) and X11 headers/libs are not available
make
and it gives the error:
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
The file explains that If my make is not called `make', set the environment variable MAKE to
its name, and use that name throughout these instructions. I really do not know how I should do it since I am new in Linux.
Is there any other instruction with more explanation? I would be very thankful in advance for your help or guidances.

Unless you do not want to view graphs on-screen (or use a Mac) you
need ‘X11’ installed, including its headers and client libraries. For
recent Fedora distributions it means (at least) RPMs ‘libX11’,
‘libX11-devel’, ‘libXt’ and ‘libXt-devel’. On Debian we recommend the
meta-package ‘xorg-dev’. If you really do not want these you will need
to explicitly configure R without X11, using --with-x=no.
More specifically, for Ubuntu, this means:
sudo apt-get install xorg-dev
and then proceed with compiling and installing R.
If you have to compile R in your system and install you should have libx11-dev package installed in Ubunut.Can you check whether this package is installed or not.
Otherwise you can configure the source with this option as a work around solution only in the case if you are not going to use any GUI functionality in R.
./configure --with-x=no
You need to install these libraries:
sudo apt-get install -y libx11-dev \
xorg-dev \
libcurl4-openssl-dev
Then run:
./configure
make
And then it should work.

Ok, so I'm kind of a complete foreigner in the UNIX/LINUX land, but I need to install profbuf 2.4.1.
I was following the instructions by doing
wget http://protobuf.googlecode.com/files/protobuf-2.4.1.tar.bz2
tar xfj protobuf-2.4.1.tar.bz2
pushd protobuf-2.4.1
./configure
make
sudo make install
I could only go as far as ./configure'. WHen I tried runningmake`, I got some error saying "No target specified and no makefile found... Stop"
Does anyone know what I might've done wrong?

You probably don't have a g++ compiler in your system or your environment variable doesn't contain the path of it. To install one on linux use the following:
yum install gcc-c++
I had met the same question before, and now I've known the reason. It's lack of corresponding library. If you are using redhat, use root permission to enter the two lines of commands:
# yum install glibc-headers
# yum install gcc-c++
If you are using ubuntu,you can enter this:
# sudo apt-get install build-essential
I've solved my question by that way. Wish you luck!
