Is it possible to override Social Office theme in Liferay 6.1? - liferay

I would like to override Social Office theme (so-theme) in Liferay 6.1.20 EE, because I would like to use its layout and social office experience, but with some changes in css, page templates, etc.
I've already seen this question
but it is concluded that there is no way to do it, except from editing the actual so-theme, which development-wise and upgrade-wise is obviously problematic.
I've tried copying the whole so-theme with its jars to a new theme project, so that I could have a diff folder with my changes, but I did not manage to make it work.
I have made the proper changes (plugin name etc) in properties files and after I deploy it, I can see my new theme (w/o icon though) but when I select it, the following exception is thrown:
09:37:23,043 INFO [com.liferay.portal.plugin.PluginPackageUtil][PluginPackageUtil:1465] Finished checking for available updates in 1125 ms

Is it possible to manage it somehow? Maybe with some additional configuration's in my theme's properties files? I can provide more code if needed.

The easiest way to access so-theme in a development-friendly way is to just use the source. (Choose the proper tag/branch). Should be easier than manually creating the _diffs folder. Please try with this and report back if it does not help

Access a property defined in portal-ext.properties from a theme that uses Freemarker - Liferay 7

I need to obtain a property that is set in portal-ext.properties from my theme's portal_normal.ftl file. Using Liferay 7.
All my searches have come up short, but I can't believe I'm the first one to have this need.
For background, I need to display a web content that is stored in the global site. This needs to be displayed on every site, which is why it's going into the theme. It also needs to be updated by the content editors, so the content can't be included in the theme.
I can display the web content easily, using the journalArticleLocalService like this
journalArticleLocalService.fetchArticle(10197,"1260480")
but I obviously don't want to hard code the group ID and article ID like this; and they are already stored in portal-ext.properties for another reason.
Also, I know about theme configuration values, I use them for a lot of other configuration needs, but those require the values to be entered for each site and there are hundreds of sites in our implementation so this is not an option.
Thanks in advance for any solutions or advice you can provide.
Properties are (as far as I know) not available in Liferay's Freemarker Templates - and as everything in Liferay tries to phase them out in favor of OSGi based configuration) I'd not recommend keeping up the configuration there. Any change requires a restart of the portal - proper configuration would make them hot-changeable.
However, as you now have this situation and probably look for a quick solution: You can create a TemplateContextContributor and make the required values available for your template.

How can I create Liferay web content structure's outside of Liferay configuration?

I'm very new to Liferay theme development and i'm trying to find the most optimal workflow for development.
So I've been experimenting with creating Web Content Templates and Web Content Structures within Liferay CMS configuration.
What I would ideally like to do is create my view "Web Content Structure" outside of Liferay configuration and instead have it as a view/template inside my theme files so that I can have my code peer reviewed and version controlled in Bitbucket.
Is this possible?
Alternatively is there a way to output the values of a given web content instance within my theme?
I'm building a theme for Liferay 7 by the way.
Thanks in advance
Richard
You can copy and paste the structure when you create them form the LFR editors into your source code repository.
Also if you know how to define the JSON you can do it straight in the file. The free market templates are even easier to edit in file format. When you're done, you need to go and upload the artefacts to the portal via the editor/file upload option.
You can't stick it into the theme because that approach would not allow you to do updates.
You can search for a community plugin or write your own one that would do structure/template updates during deploy.

How to secure content in Orchard CMS

I'd like to use the roles and membership ability of Orchard CMS to limit access to a staff portal in Orchard CMS. At present there doesn't look like there's an out of the box way to do it.
I've found numerous references to modules that should be able to help out but none seem to work.
Very Simple Permissions is a codeplex item suggested by some that has a dead link nowadays and doesn't seem to exist on codeplex.
Science Project: Quanta destroys my site everytime I try to install it with a missing dll issue, and not sure if its what I need anyways.
Does anyone have any guidance as to how to either: show/hide menu items based on roles using the standard menu system or advanced menu plugin
or
limit content visibility based on roles. If its a module fantastic, otherwise don't mind getting my hands dirty with some coding but a point in the right way to do this mvc style would be great. I'm going to presume I need to edit the controller for the menu module to check for current membership and adjust the view data accordingly. I'm moving away from webforms. slowly. Still getting my head around the framework.
Thanks for checking in.
For those who are still struggling with this, there's a module is called ContentPermissions which is available here:
gallery.orchardproject.net/List/Modules/Orchard.Module.Orchard.ContentPermissions
Once installed, you can then add the ContentPermissionsPart to the Content Type you want to secure.
Quanta really is what you want. You are probably missing one of its dependencies. Pete, the author, is also super-active on the CodePlex forums so if you ask there, you'll get an answer.
UPDATE: Orchard 1.5.1, the current version as I'm writing this update, supports content item permissions and menu trimming out of the box.

SharePoint 2007 custom theme. where did this CSS file come from?

We set up the SharePoint 12 hive folder for a custom theme with a new xml entry and folder.
Is everything required for a custom theme living in the theme folder? I'm asking because we are seeing CSS files that appear to be dynamically named rendered on SharePoint pages in the folder that are not actually in the folder.
Will we have to use SPD and custom site changes to get a custom theme to work?
I've got a designer working only in the theme folder, but he is seeing rendered css that he can't get to. He is not using SPD
That 1011-65001 squence file is found nowhere? what is that an where can I find it. Any way to have my custom theme all hard fixed name css files in that folder without using SPD?
/_themes/MYNEWFOLDER/MYNEWTHEME1011-65001.css?rev=12%2E0%2E0%2E6421
===
Update: I just realzed that css is creatd when I apply the theme and so it's in my _themes site folder. But now, when I attempt to re-apply the theme, that was working before, now i get a write error on _themes.
I can answer your first query why its dyanamic name this is because themes which you installed are ghosted version and when you apply them an unghosted version is created for the specific site where it is applied. so a dyanamic naming is required and it cannot be hard coded in MOSS even if you try using SPD you can do it but you have to remove the theming then.
the same you have also have notified in update that the css name is changed only when you apply it.
regarding your second issue of reapplying it did you try applying another them and then back to first one and is giving error then please check the 12 hive logs it will give you cause of failure and if still you are not able to figure out the same plz share the relavent log here we will try to help you

Sharepoint: Modify the page template of views

I have a sharepoint list with several views. I can modify the view pages (such as AllItems.aspx) via the sharepoint designer. However I would prefer to modify the underlying template instead.
Now I could directly modify the default view page template located in templates\pages\viewpage.aspx but this would affect the whole sharepoint installation.
I would rather make a copy of this template and make my list (or views) point to it. Is there a way I can accomplish this?
Note: The list/views were created via the Web UI without any custom XML.
Check out this blog:
http://weblogs.asp.net/soever/archive/2006/11/11/SharePoint-Solution-Generator-2D00-part-1_3A00_-create-a-site-definition-from-an-existing-site.aspx
Basically, use the sharepoint solution generator to create a VS solution of your SharePoint list. The solution will contain a file called schema.xml that defines the list and associated views. You can then customize the aspx pages like viewlist.aspx and point the schema at your custom pages. When you deploy the solution/feature it will deploy your custom pages with it.
There's really a wealth of info out on the internets, it's just difficult to find when you don't know what you're looking for. But this should get you started in the right direction.
Also, in my experience, once you create the solution you should port it (read: copy teh contents) into an STSDEV project. STSDEV really shows you what's happening behind the scenes, whereas the other VS tools for SP development can do some hand-waving magic which will leave you in the dark when things go wrong. Just my 2 cents.
