I have static site (html + css) generated by nanoc.
It works under Apache.
I want use pretty url instead of .html suffix at the end. Like this:
http://domain.ru
http://domain.ru/page/page1/
http://domain.ru/page/page2/
instead of
http://domain.ru/index.html
http://domain.ru/page/page1.html
http://domain.ru/page/page2.html
So, the 1st way is to create the separate folders with names page1 and page2 and place inside index.html files with corresponding content. When client does request:
http://domain.ru/page/page1/ is loaded file page1/index.html
The 2nd way is to have such files structure:
page (folder)
- page1.html (file)
- page2.html (file)
and create rule for .htaccess file in root of the site:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(.+)/$ /$1.html
So, the question is which way is better ? May be there are some additional costs of using
rewrite rules or pitfalls? May be there are some good practices for this questions for static generated sites.
PS:
In any way i use .htaccess file: i need switch on utf-8 encoding, enable 404 error handling , disallow browse folders

I prefer to use index.html in directories, because it is server -independent. I don’t think there’s a good reason not to do it that way.

The .htaccess inside of the public folder contains:

i did't added .htaccess and index.php file.
in .htaccess when i add this line. url redirect to xammp welcome screen

I'd say you want to internally rewrite all incoming requests to the controller inside the /project/public folder. But that is not what you do. The rule you implemented (RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?$1 [L,QSA]) only rewrites relative to the requested folder. No mentioning of "public" in there.
The actual setup you need depends a bit on your http host setup here. Where its DOCUMENT_ROOT points to. Most likely to the folder that contains the file system structure you posted in your question. If so you should implement a rule that rewrites all incoming requests to the /project/public folder.
Something like that, though you probably need to tweak it to match your actual setup:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^ /public/index.php?%{REQUEST_URI} [L,QSA]
You can implement such rule in the http server's host configuration. Or, if you do not have access to that, you can use a distributed configuration file (if you have enabled those for the http host), so a ".htaccess" style file. That file should be located inside the folder your http hosts DOCUMENT_ROOT setting points to. So the folder containing the file system structure your posted.
Other setups are possible, this is just one option. The point is: you need to rewrite the requests to your controller. Where the controller actually is.
First what I want to note it for you is
I use appserv.
I create the .htaccess file in direct file, so .htaccess file is in the folder /web.
All I want is use RewriteRule for all web links except (.css)-(.js)-(all types of images and .txt)-(and all files name).
I use this code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^content/([0-9]+)/$ content.php?pid=$1 [L]
but when I open this page as web/content/2, the css, js, images are not loaded.
I do not know what's the problem :(
I am use Codeigniter to creat my site. it is a huge site with a lot of contents.
i use the default welcome controller for all pages.
the path is like this now

and my folder structure is like this

because i am doing the content first, so all the images are set to absolute patch (http://mydomain.com/static/images/foldername/pc.jpg)
now when i use the rewrite to remove "inde.php" and "welcome"

all css and image file are not accessible anymore. I have nearly a thousand pages with images. I don't have the time to change the page one by one. the deadline is coming, please help.

Have you tried adding the css-folder to your excluded rewriteconditions?

Does not seem to exclude the folder css from rewriting (see images is excluded).
Try something like

I think the problem lies with your .htaccess file. We have a similar setup, and that url living outside of the application directory is available just as you have it with a direct url relative to its path. Check out the wiki at http://codeigniter.com/wiki/mod_rewrite for the correct way to set up your .htaccess file.
Edit to clarify: The url http://mydomain.com/static/images/foldername/pc.jpg should work. something about your .htaccess file is wrong.

First, a little background on file setup. I am running a LAMP server that hosts multiple domains. I have staging and live sites on this server, under different directories under the web root.
examples
/webroot/live/site1/[public files]
/webroot/live/site2/[public files]
/webroot/stage/site1/[public files]
/webroot/stage/site2/[public files]
The domains for each of these go to the IP of the server, which points at the webroot directory. I have an .htaccess file there to load the appropriate content based on the http_host.
examples
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.site1-live.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /live/site1/$1 [PT,L,QSA]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.site1-stage.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /stage/site1/$1 [PT,L,QSA]
These work great for hitting the home page and any of the internal pages, even with the specific pages being like site1-live.com/view/123. Each site's htaccess handles those.
My issue (sorry it took so long to get here):
When I head to any subdirectory within a site, like www.site1-live.com/rss, the content loads just fine, but the URL changes to something like the following
http://www.site1-live.com/live/site1/rss/
Essentially showing the path from the webroot to the files.
How can I avoid this? I obviously want the url to remain www.site1-live.com/rss. Do I need an htaccess file inside the rss directory to block this somehow?

then have the whole url in the second line www.yourdomain.com/live/...

why do you need the QSA flag?
Anyway, what is happening to you is that mod_index (or whatever is serving you directories) is redirecting you www.site1-live.com/rss (without the ending /) to the equivalent URL with the ending /.
If you don't use mod_alias or something list that on the rewritten URLs, removing the PT should work as you expect.
Two things:
Firstly - I have version 2 of a website located in a folder named v2, and I want to redirect any traffic that is NOT a child of the v2 folder, to www.example.com/v2
The old site located in the root was created in iWeb and has a LOT of subfolders and sub-subfolders.
So:
www.example.com/v2 = New site
www.example.com/Page.html
www.example.com/category/Page.html
ww.example.com/category/subcategory/Page.html = All generic examples of what I need to redirect.
Secondly, and I don't know if this is possible, I want to hide /v2/ in the URL, so that visitors will just see www.example.com/page even though they are actually on www.example.com/v2/page
Links are hardcoded to the v2 folder, like so <a href="v2/contact.html">
Any help is MOST appreciated. I've spent hours trying to figure this out, but I'm only just learning about htaccess and regular expressions, and am totally confused.
