Run a shell script in new terminal from current terminal - linux

How do you run a shell script in a new terminal in Linux from a terminal like "start test.bat" in Windows, also it should be working in the console mode.

Here's a simple example to get you started:
To write a shell script, do this on your command prompt:
echo -e '#!/bin/sh\n echo "hello world"' > abc.sh
This writes:
#!/bin/sh
echo "hello world"
To a file called abc.sh
Next, you want to set it to executable by:
chmod +x abc.sh
Now, you can run it by:
./abc.sh
And you should see:
hello world
On your terminal.
To run it in a new terminal, you can do:
gnome-terminal -x ./abc.sh
or, if it's xterm:
xterm -e ./abc.sh
Here's a list of different terminal emulators.
Alternatively, you just run it in your current terminal, but background it instead by:
./abc.sh &

I came here wanting to figure out how to make a script spawn a terminal and run it self in it, so for those who want to do that I figured out this solution:
if [ ! -t 0 ]; then # script is executed outside the terminal?
# execute the script inside a terminal window with same arguments
x-terminal-emulator -e "$0" "$#"
# and abort running the rest of it
exit 0
fi

For gnome try this.
Replace ls with the command you want to run
gnome-terminal -x sh -c "ls|less"

As of January 2020, the -e and -x option in gnome-terminal still run properly but throw out the following warnings:
For -e:
# Option “-e” is deprecated and might be removed in a later version
of gnome-terminal.
# Use “-- ” to terminate the options and put the command line to
execute after it.
For -x:
# Option “-x” is deprecated and might be removed in a later version
of gnome-terminal.
# Use “-- ” to terminate the options and put the command line to
execute after it.
Based on that information above, I confirmed that you can run the following two commands without receiving any warning messages:
gnome-terminal -- /bin/sh -c '<your command>'
gnome-terminal -- ./<your script>.sh

Linux script How to open new terminal and run commands in it

I am writing a script which will take users input and then run following command in new terminal.
I am working on bigger "script", but for testing I created this little version of my problem.

I have found that something like x-terminal-emulator -e {command} should work, but when I run it I have the following error and the screen just flashes.
returned message:
QDir::exists: Empty or null file name
Then I would need something to keep the terminal up, I found --noclose or -hold tags, but I can't test it util I find the working command.
Do you have some experiences with opening new terminal from bash script ?
Iam opened for any hints.
Some temporary solution which works now:
x-terminal-emulator -e 'nmap -sV -sC 189.55.23.174 -vvv'
I used just -e to execute command and with nmap it is working now.
I will figure out other commands and I will try to put it in complex script with more types of terminals.

How to parse json data correctly using jq to set to var inside shell script [duplicate]

I do this in a script:
read direc <<< $(basename `pwd`)
and I get:
Syntax error: redirection unexpected
in an ubuntu machine
/bin/bash --version
GNU bash, version 4.0.33(1)-release (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu)
while I do not get this error in another suse machine:
/bin/bash --version
GNU bash, version 3.2.39(1)-release (x86_64-suse-linux-gnu)

Why the error?
Does your script reference /bin/bash or /bin/sh in its hash bang line? The default system shell in Ubuntu is dash, not bash, so if you have #!/bin/sh then your script will be using a different shell than you expect. Dash does not have the <<< redirection operator.
Make sure the shebang line is:
#!/bin/bash
or
#!/usr/bin/env bash
And run the script with:
$ ./script.sh
Do not run it with an explicit sh as that will ignore the shebang:
$ sh ./script.sh # Don't do this!
If you're using the following to run your script:
sudo sh ./script.sh
Then you'll want to use the following instead:
sudo bash ./script.sh
The reason for this is that Bash is not the default shell for Ubuntu. So, if you use "sh" then it will just use the default shell; which is actually Dash. This will happen regardless if you have #!/bin/bash at the top of your script. As a result, you will need to explicitly specify to use bash as shown above, and your script should run at expected.
Dash doesn't support redirects the same as Bash.
Docker:
I was getting this problem from my Dockerfile as I had:
RUN bash < <(curl -s -S -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/moovweb/gvm/master/binscripts/gvm-installer)
However, according to this issue, it was solved:
The exec form makes it possible to avoid shell string munging, and
to RUN commands using a base image that does not contain /bin/sh.
Note
To use a different shell, other than /bin/sh, use the exec form
passing in the desired shell. For example,
RUN ["/bin/bash", "-c", "echo hello"]
Solution:
RUN ["/bin/bash", "-c", "bash < <(curl -s -S -L https://raw.githubusercontent.com/moovweb/gvm/master/binscripts/gvm-installer)"]
Notice the quotes around each parameter.
You can get the output of that command and put it in a variable. then use heredoc. for example:
nc -l -p 80 <<< "tested like a charm";
can be written like:
nc -l -p 80 <<EOF
tested like a charm
EOF
and like this (this is what you want):
text="tested like a charm"
nc -l -p 80 <<EOF
$text
EOF
Practical example in busybox under docker container:
kasra#ubuntu:~$ docker run --rm -it busybox
/ # nc -l -p 80 <<< "tested like a charm";
sh: syntax error: unexpected redirection
/ # nc -l -p 80 <<EOL
> tested like a charm
> EOL

/ # nc -l -p 80 <<EOF

> EOF

do it the simpler way,
direc=$(basename `pwd`)
Or use the shell
$ direc=${PWD##*/}
Another reason to the error may be if you are running a cron job that updates a subversion working copy and then has attempted to run a versioned script that was in a conflicted state after the update...
On my machine, if I run a script directly, the default is bash.
If I run it with sudo, the default is sh.
That’s why I was hitting this problem when I used sudo.
In my case error is because i have put ">>" twice
mongodump --db=$DB_NAME --collection=$col --out=$BACKUP_LOCATION/$DB_NAME-$BACKUP_DATE >> >> $LOG_PATH
i just correct it as
mongodump --db=$DB_NAME --collection=$col --out=$BACKUP_LOCATION/$DB_NAME-$BACKUP_DATE >> $LOG_PATH
Before running the script, you should check first line of the shell script for the interpreter.
Eg:
if scripts starts with /bin/bash , run the script using the below command
"bash script_name.sh"
if script starts with /bin/sh, run the script using the below command
"sh script_name.sh"
./sample.sh - This will detect the interpreter from the first line of the script and run.

Get bash script to open terminal

In Windows when I double-click a Batch script, it will automatically open a terminal window and show me what's happening. If I were to double-click a bash script in Linux, a terminal window does not open to show me what is happening; it runs in the background. I have seen that one can use one script to launch another script in a new terminal window with x-terminal-emulator -e "./script.sh", but is there any bash command I can put into the same (one) script.sh so that it will open a terminal and show me what's happening (or if I need to answer y/n questions)?
You can do something similar to what Slax
developers do in their bootinst.sh:

This script would run correctly both when started in graphical
environment and in tty. It tries to restart the script inside
konsole and xterm and but if it doesn't find neither of them it
will simply run in the background.

Script command losing alias from shell

When I run the script command it loses all the aliases from the existing shell which is not desired for people using lots of aliases. So, I am trying to see if I can automatically source the .profile again to see if it works without the user have to do it.
Here below is the code:

Basically I am creating a named pipe and the making the pipe as stdin to the script program, trying to run the source command and then close the stdin from pipe to the terminal stdin so that I can continue with the script.
But when I execute, the script is exiting after I execute "exec 0<&-",
bash-3.2$ exec 0<&-
bash-3.2$ exit
Script done, output file is typescript
Not sure why the exit is called and script is terminated. If I can make the script move the stdin from pipe to terminal then it should be fine.
You can get script to execute a bash login shell by telling it to do so explicitly.
# Gnu script (most Linux distros)
script -c "bash -l"
# BSD script (also Mac OS X)
script typescript bash -l
That will cause your .bash_profile to be sourced.
By the way, redirections are not stacks. When you write exec 0<&-, you're closing standard input, and when bash's standard input is closed, it exits.

Shell script statements not running one after one

I wrote a shell script that calls some other shell scripts in a new terminal window. It was working fine on my computer. its like this

gnome-terminal -e "sh one.sh"
zenity --info --text "exed one"
gnome-terminal -e "sh 2.sh"
zenity --info --text "exed 2"
firefox "www.aurl1.com" "www.aurl2.com"
According what I understood, the script will first open a terminal and run the first script, after finishing that it will show the zenity then run two in new terminal then show zenity like that. But when the same was exed on another computer, the script is not following this order. It simply opens all terminal side by side not waiting one to finish and showing the dialogues together. Why is this problem ? Thanks in advance.
It used to be that gnome-terminal would run each terminal in its own process. But now gnome-terminal checks on startup if there is already a gnome-terminal process running, and if so, tells the existing terminal process to open a new window with the given arguments. There is no problem with your script: it is waiting for each process to finish in turn, it is just that gnome-terminal is exiting immediately after passing off its work to a different process.
According to man gnome-terminal, you can use the --disable-factory option to disable this behaviour, and run each command in its own process.
Try this:
gnome-terminal --disable-factory -e 'sh -c "echo hi && sleep 10"'
echo now you can run script 2
Run them like this:
gnome-terminal -e "sh one.sh" ; zenity --info --text "exed one" ; gnome-terminal -e "sh 2.sh" ; zenity --info --text "exed 2"
What the comma does is it tells the shell to execute the first command, wait for it to finish and only then move on to the next. Otherwise, the behavior you described is normal, it parses the lines one by one, without waiting for anything.
