This is probably bordering off-topic-ness here, but not a lot of people on SuperUser use GVim, as opposed to here, so I'm leaving it here.
The problem is simple - I'm using GVim 7.3. from vim.org, downloaded it in the form of archived binaries (the two archive files) like always and replaced the older version. However, I can't get Windows to recognize it and to associate a file extension to it.
From windows explorer go to, let's say, .py file, Open with ... / Browse / gvim.exe in its directory and ... nothing. Like it never happened.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this behaviour? It's mighty annoying to have to open every file from within Vim manually.
I think the default installer ("self-installing executable") from vim.org lets you register shell associations; this means you get an entry "open with vim" in every context menu from the explorer. Did you not use this file?

This doesn't answer your question, but it's a different way to edit with gvim from the context menu.
Create a .reg file with the contents below (adjusting your path to gvim.exe) and execute it. Then whenever you right-click on a file in explorer you will have an "Open with GVIM" option.

I gave up trying all kinds of tricks through the registry, but this solution works for me just fine. I might add, I'm having the same issue on Windows 7. Since Windows seems to be able to do the association with vim.exe just fine, and this is apparently tied to the file name, I moved vim.exe off as say vim.ex$ and made a copy of gvim.exe to vim.exe. Cheap and easy way around this goofy problem, and I can't say I ever use vim.exe on purpose.

I have installed gvim in windows 7. When I right click on a file, I get list of editor to be opened with. I see a icon for notepad++, 7zip and beyond compare, but not for vim. it is tough to search "Edit with Vim" in the big list. Is it possible to add icon to "Edit with Vim". I tried setting ICON in registry to gvim.exe path, but that didn't work
I am currently having a crack at coding this up "for real" (but no success yet).
In the meantime, here's what I did on my machine as a sort of workaround:
Create a new text file and call it (for example) vim.reg
and paste this into the file:

and then right-click on the file and select Merge.
Or just manually add those keys directly in RegEdit if you're comfortable with that.
You may need to restart Explorer.exe (eg. log out and back in) for it to take effect.
This will add a new "Edit with vim" entry, with the icon, to the context menu for every filetype.
If you want it only for text files, for example, then change the two occurrences of "*" in the file to "txtfile".
The other vim context menu entries (eg. open with existing vim session) will not be affected - they will still not have icons.
UPDATE:
From the bug report that Christian mentioned, it looks like someone else has now implemented this, in version 7.4.724.
Vim.org reports that the currently release is 7.4.729, so it should include that.
The only trouble is that the Windows binaries available for download from the site are from 2013.
But vim.org also suggests a way to get the latest version, precompiled for Windows:

These versions are unofficial, but the download number is high and
complaints are few.
And
For an unofficial version that does include all the latest patches and
optionally a bit more: Cream.
The "one-click installer" mentioned includes the Cream changes.
For the "real Vim" use the "without Cream" version listed further down.
As far as I know, this is not possible yet. There is a whishlist bug that requests this feature, but no one has contributed code yet.
I downloaded and modified a style file and placed it in the Notepad++ themes folder. I was able to select it and have it update the style as expected. I then went to Settings -> Style Configurator and changed the font of COMMENT of language VHDL to MS Gothic, hit save, and closed and exited Notepad++. I am able to relaunch Notepad++ and still see the change (I'm running Notepad++ in admin mode on Win7).
The only file that I can see a new timestamp on is my XML theme file, but I don't see MS Gothic anywhere in the file. Where is this information being stored? It is overriding the settings from my theme file. I also checked %APPDATA%\Notepad++\stylers.xml but I don't see it there either.
I realize I can change it back through the GUI, but I'd like to know how to get back to my original theme without selecting every style in the language manually (as I've made multiple changes). If I could edit (or delete) a file, I would prefer it.
Look in your %APPDATA%\Notepad++ folder, specifically for the stylers.xml file.
Uninstall Notepad++
Reinstall it again, but this time check the first box, the one that says "Don't use %APPDATA%..... "

The reason is that Notepad++ install all the files at administrator profile, if you are using another user then you are screw, it will not work properly, you have to run it always as an administrator so it can work properly. To avoid this, just do as i said.
If files are going to APPDATA, then you can create a folder called "themes" and then inside that place your new xml themes. Then close and reopen notepad++ and you should see your new style in the "Select theme:" drop down. Whatever you named the file should be what appears in the dropdown
If you are on Windows 10 the path to add the new theme is :
C:\Users\NAME-OF-COMPUTER\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++\themes
stylers.xml is located one director/ folder above the themes :
Just as a complement to the other answers, if you made the changes on another theme than the default theme (stylers.xml) then your changes are saved to
%APPDATA%\Notepad++\themes\TheThemeYouModified.xml.
For example, if you modified the choco theme, then look for the %APPDATA%\Notepad++\themes\choco.xml.
You will also find a choco.xml in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\themes but this one is not where your changes are saved.
I tried Rbastardo answer, but even when I check "Don't use %APPDATA%....." when installing Notepad++, the changes are still saved in %APPDATA%.
In case this helps someone in the future, if you installed Notepad++ via Scoop then look for your themes directory here:

I have PHP for FastCGI installed on Windows 7 through the Web Platform Installer. I need to edit php.ini to enable logging, but I'm not able to overwrite the existing file, apparently because something has it open and/or locked.
Stopping the server in IIS Manager doesn't help; stopping the Windows Process Activation Service and the World Wide Web Publishing Service doesn't help. phpinfo() confirms that I'm working with the correct file (C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\php.ini). It's not marked as read only and I do have permissions for it. I'm out of ideas.
I had this problem and managed to work around it. You need to be running the editor (notepad or whatever) as an admin.
In Window Vista / Window 7, right click and choose "Run as Administrator".
Then open php.ini and edit it...
Another option is to copy the text of the file into a new file in a different location, make your changes, save the file as 'php.ini'. Then copy the new file across overwriting the old one. Explorer may handle the permissions differently.
I've had a similar problem, and I was working in windows 10 which doesn't use "run as administrator"
So this is what I did:
right click the problem file and go to properties
go to tab security
click edit, which should have a shield
select in names of groups: Users(computer specifics\Users)
in the square under it you can allow editing of the file
This causes it to allow you to edit the file for users and not run into the problem anymore. This also removes the problem in the future for this file so you can always edit it again by just opening the file in text editor.
Please note I am Dutch and that certain names are translated incorrectly.
You could use the Find Handle feature of Process Explorer (direct EXE download link), from Sysinternals (a part of Microsoft now), to find out what exactly is locking the file.

In Windows 7, right click Notepad and choose "Run as Administrator". Make sure you do not use Notepad++ as your editor. It accesses this file and therefore tells you there's is an error.
The default notepad will work fine with these instructions.
Depending on what are you trying to write to the file, you can write to an '.htaccess' file on the root of the site instead. I can provide a more specific example if you would like.
You can also use Unlocker to figure this out. A pain, but the utility is really handy anyway so it won't hurt to have it around.
1) Open CMD with administrator mostly like this.
2) Then go to "C:\Program Files\php-8.1.7" like this.
3) then paste "cd C:\Program Files\php-8.1.7" and press Enter and type
php.ini like this.
4) It will automatically open the file in a text editor or suggest to

Try this:
Stop the webserver
Change the file
Start the webserver
If that doesn't work, then you are probably changing the wrong file. It's possible that the original file is elsewhere and when the server starts it copies it to C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\php.ini. phpinfo() might be pointing to the file that is overwritten every time...
I recently updated my Eclipse to the latest release 3.5 and since then I have a very annoying problem with c&p using the shortcuts.
In an editor (xml, jsp, doesn't matter which one) I try to copy something and paste it somewhere else, nothing happens. When I cut out something and put it somewhere else I sometimes get something else (like a messed up part of my previous selection) or just some whitespaces. This gets even worse when I change lines in between.
First I thought that my keyboard is probably broken but it works just fine in other programs. Then I tried using the context menus' c&p and there it works. Yesterday I managed to get at least an error message when I tried to copy a file in the navigator from one project to another (the message was just "error using copy...bla". no details).
Does anyone else have this problem, or know how to solve it?
I am running on Kubuntu 9.04, and have quite some plugins installed (but only from the Galileo Updates Site), like Birt, Mylin, WST, or Subversive.
For my problem, I had to go to Window > Preferences > Java > Editor > Typing, and uncheck "Update imports"
This must be related to the key mapping, since those shortcuts are defined according to context.
(Column "When", in Preferences / General / Keys)
Check if those shortcuts do not work for any editor (do they work for Java editor?)
If they work for some editor, not for other, then some plugin settings must have re-affected them to another command.
This is caused by various X clipboard managers doing weird things with the clipboard. (bug report).
In XFCE the clipman applet was rolled in XFCE 4.8, and will be the source of these problems.
To fix this in XFCE - kill xfce4-settings-helper. You will need to use Settings Manager -> Session and Startup -> Session to kill it, as otherwise it may restart automatically.
To prevent this starting next time, you will need to remove it from your startup/login programs in Settings Manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart.
Problem was solved with newer Eclipse releases. I think >= 3.6. Depending on your distribution there may be a (back)port of this (not on my Xubuntu 11.04) within the repositories.
So a tarball installation of Eclipse 4.0 works perfectly for me. Cut&Paste works and I am lucky that my plugins are compatible to 4.0.
Unfortunately Sublime Text has the same problems.
I read somewhere that in KDE maybe Klipper / "Klipper on the panel" conflicts with eclipse copy action.
It's a tool for clipboard history. Try to remove that! It may solve your problem :-/
For me the xfce4-settings-helper killing worked.
Workaround:
You can cut&paste from the compare view. So simply compare the un-copyable file (e.g., local history) with a different version and Control-C what you need there.
In the *.java editor page, right click and select open in text editor. Past your snippet there. Your Snippet will show in the *.java page'
I use Eclipse Kepler for PHP development. It's dumb I know.
None of the solutions suggested here has solved this source of frustration.
I can confirm the copy function works whether shortcut keys are bound or not. As I can copy from eclipse and paste into any other application. Except eclipse.
My solution. Accidental discovery: Eclipse Kepler will allow you to paste outside the php open and close tags and allow you to click and drag the highlighted block of content into into position.
Acceptable solution for small bits of code. Horribly crippling for larger development environments.
For Xming, this resolved the problem for me. In XLaunch uncheck Clipboard (clipboard manager) in the "Specify parameter settings" GUI form.

Vim is a very different tool than Visual Studio. Plugins may help you get certain bits of functionality you desire, but do not expect them to work exactly like VS, work well together, or even work at all.
If you are looking for a programming environment more like Visual Studio, there are many good graphical IDE's you can use such as NetBeans, Eclipse, Code::Blocks, KDevelop, Anjuta, etc. Some of these tools are, IMHO, better heavyweight IDE's than Visual Studio, and all are available on Linux for free.
You should either learn to use Vim the way it was built to be used, or find a different tool that suits you better. Shoehorning Vim into a surrogate for Visual Studio will probably cause you more pain than it's worth.
Yes it's different to VS, but that doesn't mean it can't be used in the same way. It's just not as easy to do it :)
Personally I go the other way and use ViEmu to get VS to behave like VIM. But I'm not in the same situation as the author of this question.

This script is using Python extension. I have Python 2.5 installed in Windows. I am using Gvim 7.2 which is compiled with Python 2.4. So, I have replaced the executables of Gvim as explained here:

So, Gvim became compatible with Python 2.5 and raised no problems. Also, a menu entry "Visual Studio" has appeared as expected. It connects to Visual Studio itself, and it works perfectly. It does not just compiles a file, it can compile a solution containing more than one project as in Visual Studio. You can even use the Vim's 'quickfix' feature. Hope this helps.
If you really want to have vim as the front end, try Eclim. It uses Eclipse as a backend daemon for code completion and project management, and vim as the interface.
If you only like vim because of the vi key bindings, but want it to be more IDE like, you could try the latest MonoDevelop that has it built in.
These plugins used to exist long before vim had tabs. I'd be quite surprised there isn't a way to tune these plugins to split windows instead of opening tabs.
Now I can't help you much as I don't use these specific plugins but other ones. You should look at their help (:h project, :h taglist, etc)
PS: in vim terminology (it will help you browse the help files), what you call "buffer" is actually called "window", while a "buffer" is just the text you are working on, it may be associated to a file, or not. For a given buffer, there may be no or several window displaying parts of the buffer.
