Posting this as the answer, since I had it as part of the comment.
In order to make sure that any CF ajax functionality works correctly, you have to make sure that the CFIDE directory is properly configured under the site. It needs to be at the root of the site, and publicly accessible.

I have been trying to generate a SSL certificate for one of our projects which is running on an Azure VM which has no IP restrictions. However, the challenge file which is generated throws a 404 error and is not accessible over the web.
I have tried the following:
Moving the static content type above the extension less options in IIS
Adding a mime type for text/json, text/html
None of the above work which is making it really hard for me to generate a SSL using this service. Any idea how I can make it accessible ? I have given full access to that specific App Pool identity so permissions don't seem to be an issue in this case, its just the way the extension less files are being handled in IIS
Any help is appreciated.

Also, if you're using a system with lots of custom routing or a framework that interferes with how URLs are handled (e.g. a CMS), ensure that you've told it to ignore /.well-known
We often use Umbraco for public-facing sites and I keep forgetting that I need to add ~/.well-known to the umbracoReservedUrls app setting in the web.config. Hopefully next time I'm stuck, I'll come across this answer...
Taking inspiration from the accepted answer, I did the following:
I was using plesk for windows on Godaddy.
Go to
Web server settings
In the MIME types, added the following node and click OK.
text/plain .
Note the dot at the end of the above setting.
I have moved an Orchard CMS site from one host and server to another host and server. The IP address is obviously different.
All the files have been correctly copied and the correct html is rendered.
However, all the styles sheets produce a 404 error. I repeat that the files are where they should be.
Indeed, any other resource, such as images or stylesheets produce the same problem. Again, the files are all in place.
Can anyone think what could be causing this. Nothing has changed other than the server and IP.
I have another orchard site on the same IP and server that is working fine. However, it was not moved from a different server.
I ping for the site and it comes up with the correct IP address for the new server

Not sure that this is Orchard specific, although something related to Orchard's themes and how they work could be to blame... But I really can't see what.
It sounds much more like an IIS issue.
Can you get the CSS files, by entering their URLs into the browser address-bar directly?
Try "Copy image location" or from the Image Properties, of one of the failed images. Again, can you get this if you enter it direct into the browser?
Check the URL of failed resources, against the URL of working HTML resources or dynamic pages. make sure there are no differences in webapp path or context..
You'll also need to try Ctrl-R reloading.
There could also possibly be some caching in the way.. that might be holding the "404" or "not found" results, even after the content has moved. Try & shutdown/ or force refresh all server & proxy caches.
The server people got back to me. They changed the "website to 4.0 Integrated Pipeline mode." and all now works. Go figure.
I am sure I had checked that it was in Integrated Pipeline mode, but hey ho.
We have a domain name with DNS management facility. We also have a web application developed in a GlassFish server hosted in a virtual server with a path is
http://198.98.103.233:8080/pemis/
I want to direct to the home page of that application when some one type the domain name. After navigating through the pages, we must be able to see
http://www.pemis.lk/faces/public.xhtml
in the browser rather than
http://198.98.103.233:8080/pemis/faces/public.xhtml
How can we configure that.

You need to install your application as the root application in Glassfish, as explained here. But it's not hard:
asadmin deploy --contextroot "/" your-webapp.war
or set the context-root property in the sun-web.xml or glassfish-web.xml depending on the version of Glassfish you use.
To change the port Glassfish listens on you need to modify the HTTP Listener configuration. On default installations you'll want to change http-listener-1's port. You can do so using the console. But you can also directly edit the domain's domain.xml:

Last, to make www.pemis.lk point to that server you need a DNS entry that points to the address the server is attached to. The details of how to do that depend on the comapny that sold you the domain, quite often they have online tools that allow you to enter or modify the name-address mapping. In case of doubt it's best to contact them by phone or mail.
I'm on the same path and, as you don't posted the solution that you found (if you found it), I'll add here some future reference for anyone facing this problem.
I'll break the question in two parts: Eliminating host:port and changing how the URL behave.
I don't have a complete response to the first, however if you chose to listen at port 80, by HTML standard, you will supress the port on the URL, getting half the solution you want.
The second part, changing the URL behavior and/or shortening it can be achieved by either using mod_rewrite in apache or Tuckey's URL Rewrite Filter (http://www.tuckey.org/urlrewrite/). A google search using URL Rewrite can achieve you a more in depth explanation and there's a guide on the website.
You should, however, update your question with an answer, if you found one.
I have a web application which works fine when i publish and host it on my localhost ...
The same published folder i host to a remote server and a few controls go missing on load of the page .I log into remote desktop to the server and try opening the site on the server itself it works fine. But only when i access it from my local system some controls go missing .Is there something i am missing on the Browserused on the swerver as well as my local system is IE 8 .

You probably have some URLs with a hard-coded http://localhost/....
Change all of your absolute URLs to relative URLs.
Fiddler and Firebug will be very helpful to see which URLs are being requested.
Basically i developed my app on a localhost wamp server with PHP 5. ON uploading to the actual host i notice that
The server is running php 4.4.9
Everytime i upload my .htaccess file, the server removes it completely.. seems to not be allowed
When i test out the set all i get is a 404 page not found
Any help on how to make it work on this PHP 4 server?
I did a test with CI 1.7.2, default installation.. works on my local server but when uploaded does not work, does this mean that the server does not support it?
I'm sure this isn't what you want to here, but get a new server. Here are the reasons why:
PHP 4 is no longer well supported. It's insecure.
If the server is removing .htaccess files, they are also unsupported on that server, giving you one more reason to move.
Code Igniter runs best with PHP 5 and with an .htaccess file.
The gist of this is you are going to have to hack your code back into the dark ages to get this to work, and then you will still have pretty URL issues and overall system instability. If you can make the switch, do.
If you cannot use .htaccess files with CodeIgniter, in system/application/config/config.php there is a configuration key called index_page. You need to set that to whatever page you have bootstrapping CodeIgniter (usually /index.php)
Then, make sure all your links that get routed through CI either target index.php/controller/action/params... or utilize the URL helper (with site_url or anchor) to automatically put in the index.php
Joe Mills is exactly right in his answer, though. CI works best with PHP 5 and .htaccess.

Well i found out how to fix several things
The issue with .htaccess would be to just not use modrewrite as such i put "query_string" option in my path variavable and this works.
The other issue, which was the major issue was that i was using Datamapper library which is a php 5 only library.
