Adding 'index_file' => FALSE to the Kohana::init successfully removes the index.php part of URLs, but when a page is redirected to website.com/controller/action (note: there is no index.php before controller) I get a 404 Not Found error.
How is lighttpd supposed to know to call the index.php file at the base instead of looking for a controller/action folder (which it seems to be doing and thus getting a 404)?
You need to use URL rewriting.
I would port Kohana's .htaccess to lighttpd.

I try to rewrite some of my URLs with a .htaccess file but it didn't work as expected.
This is the rewrite rule in my .htaccess file :
RewriteRule ^(index|administration)/([A-Za-z0-9-]+)(\.php)?$ index.php?c=$1&t=$2 [QSA]
When I go on www.example.com/index/main, I get a 404 error code.
So I try to change my rewrite rule to
RewriteRule ^index.php$ index.php?c=index&t=main [QSA]
Then I go to www.example.com/index.php and the webpage displays perfectly with all the datas in $_GET (c = index and t = main).
So I don't know why my first rule is not working. Let me see if you have any idea.
Is it possible that my server wants to enter the index folder, then the main folder for my first rule without taking care of my .htaccess (www.example.com/index/main) ?
You need to ensure that MultiViews (part of mod_negotiation) is disabled for this to work correctly. So, add the following at top of your .htaccess file:
Options -MultiViews
If MultiViews is enabled (it's disabled by default, but some hosts do sometimes enable this in the server config) then when you request /index/main where /index.php already exists as a physical file then mod_negotiation will make an internal request for index.php before mod_rewrite is able to process the request. (If index.html also exists, then this might be found first.)
(MultiViews essentially enables extensionless URLs by mocking up type maps and searching for files in the directory - with the same basename - that would return a response with an appropriate mime-type.)
If this happens then your mod-rewrite directive is essentially ignored (the pattern does not match, since it would need to check for index.php) and index.php is called without the URL parameters that your mod_rewrite directive would otherwise append.

This would ordinarily imply its your script (ie. index.php) that is triggering the 404 (perhaps due to missing URL parameters?), rather than Apache itself?
However, if you were seeing an Apache generated 404 then it would suggest either:
You also have an index.html file, which is found before index.php. .html files do not ordinarily accept path-info (ie. /main) so would trigger a 404.
OR, AcceptPathInfo Off is explicitly set elsewhere in the config, which would trigger a 404 when the request is internally rewritten to /index.php/main (by mod_negotiation).
I've tried to add the item below in .htaccess(wamp64\bin\apache\apache2.4.37\conf) and enabled Use URL Rewriting in Joomla however when I try to type abc.com in search engine address bar it will still redirect me to search page instead of redirecting me to the website. I've also performed checking and confirmed that .htaccess file is readable, the webpage is work when go to https://www.abc.co m however redirection still not work. I just need the page to redirect from http://abc.co m to https://www.abc.co m Is there any other way to do it? Or I'm doing it wrongly?? Please help.

The redirect itself works great. The issue is where you've put the file.
.htaccess files are meant to be in the root folder and sub-directories of your website, not in the config files for Apache. Think of them as configuration files the server will find on-the-fly as it serves up documents, not static configurations loaded when the server starts (which are found in the "conf" folder you referred to). For WAMP, the root folder is typically a folder called "www" and is normally located at c:/wamp/www. See Where is the web server root directory in WAMP? More commonly, though, this folder is called "public_html" (such as with LAMP, XAMP, MAMP, or default Apache installs).
This simple RewriteRule that I am using for practicing with .htaccess files works almost always:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^.*$ test.html
When I have the file flowers.html and I use http://localhost/flowers I get redirected to test.html, however when I rename flowers.html to flowers.php I get a 404 page with the message The requested URL /flowers was not found on this server. Does anyone know what causes this?

When I create an empty file called flowers it does redirect properly to test.html. What is going on here?
This does sound like a conflict with MultiViews, so try adding the following at the top of your .htaccess file to disable MultiViews:
Options -MultiViews
MultiViews is not enabled by default, so maybe this has been enabled in your server config?
When MultiViews (part of mod_negotiation) is enabled, a request for /flowers (no extension) will result in Apache searching for an appropriate file to return (based on mime-type) by trying various file extensions of files found in that directory. This is achieved with an internal subrequest before mod_rewrite runs.
However, it's not clear why this would be a problem in your case if you have no other directives? Since your directive simply rewrites everything to test.html (which should include any subrequests). (I was unable to reproduce this behaviour on my Apache 2.4 test server - hence my initial doubt.)
I'm trying to write a RewriteRule to make a simple url. I want users to be able to type enter
www.example.com/somepage
and have it take them to
www.example.com/abc/somepage.php
How can this be done in .htaccess?
I've tried these to no avail:
RewriteRule ^somepage$ abc/somepage.php [L]
RewriteRule ^/somepage$ /abc/somepage.php [L]
What am I doing wrong?
Edit: nginx can also handle rewrites in its configuration files (and I think is actually preferred), which was my case (see my answer below). HTH
If you want the user's web browser to be redirected to your PHP page then you need the R=301 flag at the end of the RewriteRule.
But if you want the request to be silently rewritten (so that Apache knows where to find the resource, but the user's web browser just sees the "clean" URL) then you don't want the `R' flag.
Try the following:
RewriteRule ^somepage$ /abc/somepage.php
This will only rewrite a request for /somepage so that Apache fetches the content from /abc/somepage.php instead.
Our nginx server was utilizing .htaccess files (as I implemented rewrites there before), but now it is handling the rewrites in its configuration (.conf) files (which is the recommended method).
I do not have permission to modify the .conf files, so I won't post any untested code.. Hope this helps somebody!
This is a strange one...
A while back I managed to write a .htaccess redirect that worked so that the URL was read like: www.website.com/mt?page=index - and what the real URL of this page was www.website.com/PageParser.php?file=index.php
The problem has been that the FTP system of my webhost hides .htaccess files even though they are allowed and do operate - and so I have checked back on local copies I have of my .htaccess files and none of them have the code as to how this works - and I've forgotten how I did it!!
Essentially, I am using wildcards so that anything after mt?page= will actually be showing PageParser.php?file= but without having the PageParser.php showing within the URL (and this is the important bit, because the index.php on my site root is actually sent through PageParser.php first so that anything which shouldn't be there is wiped out before the end user sees it) - so how can .htaccess redirect/rewrite the URL so that any link to /mt?page= show the file located at /PageParser.php?file= without changing the URL the user sees?

This rule will rewrite (internal redirect) request for /mt?page=hello to /PageParser.php?file=hello.php without changing URL in browser.
Your source URL example (www.website.com/mt?page=index) has index while target URL (www.website.com/PageParser.php?file=index.php) has index.php. The above rule will add .php to the page name value, so if you request /mt?page=hello.php it will be rewritten to /PageParser.php?file=hello.php.php.
If there is a typo in your URL example and page value should be passed as is, then remove .php bit from rewrite rule.
The rule will work fine even if some other parameters are present (e.g. /mt?page=hello&name=Pinky) but those extra parameters will not be passed to rewritten URL. If needed -- add QSA flag to rewrite rule.
This rule is to be placed in .htaccess in website root folder. If placed elsewhere some small tweaking may be required.
P.S.
Better write no explanation (I knew it/I did it before .. but now I forgot how I did it) than having these "excuses". While it may be 100% true, it just does not sound that great.
