I am running a website on MAMP, and the root is http://localhost/sandbox
When I have links that link to, for example - /calendar
it directs them to localhost/calendar, I want it to redirect to localhost/sandbox/calendar
What would I have to do in htaccess to get it to redirect everything to localhost/sandbox/ as the root?
You would usually change the application or site that generates the links, and have that add the /sandbox to the URL.
If that's not possible, putting this into the web root directory (the one above /sandbox) should do:
RewriteEngine on
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/sandbox # If URL does not start with /sandbox...
RewriteRule (.*) /sandbox/$1 # Add /sandbox/ in front of it
(if it's easier to achieve with Alias, Apache Gurus, feel free to add your solution, but I couldn't get Alias to work for this scenario.)
However, this solution will make any other directory besides /sandbox inaccessible. You may want to re-think your Virtual hosts structure!

I am trying to do the following -
Redirect just the root domain to a different domain.
The redirect needs to be masked so the user still thinks they are on the url they typed.
Existing subfolders should still work with the existing root domain.
For example-
I have an installation using www.currentsite.com which has lots of subfolders for example www.currentsite.com/store
I want to redirect just the root of www.currentsite.com to www.newsite.com but want the browser to still say www.currentsite.com.
If the user goes to www.currentsite.com/subfolder I still want that to work with the original installation.
I have the following which seems to be handling redirecting just the root fine but does not mask the url...
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} www.currentsite\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/$

For what you call "masked" the usage of apaches proxy module makes most sense:
ProxyPass https://www.currentsite.com https://www.newsite.co.uk
ProxyPassReverse https://www.currentsite.com https://www.newsite.co.uk
It maps one base url to another one and takes care to transparently and reliably rewrite all contained references.
The proxy module can also be used by RewriteRules, the P flag does that. But in the end it comes out itself and the above, direct usage is more transparent and less complex.

I am struggling with an age old problem. I inherited a site with some pretty good SEO and one glaring problem. The entire site is hosted on the /site/ subdirectory. I have decided that I need to load the site at the root. So something like http://example.org/site/index.php will instead redirect to /index.php (<-- that counted as a link, if it is unclear I mean it to be the root of the site/index.php.)
We use joomla for our backend and there are hundreds of pages on the site at this point. I have struggled getting any of the redirects I have seen to do what I want them to do. Basically, any page our patrons visit from an old link with /site/ in it should be redirected to the exact same link, but without the star.
I am open to just loading the page from /site/ and making it look like it is from root. It is my understanding that this can be done with some advances mod-rewrite (http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/85/Using+.htaccess+rewrite+rules#gs ?) but I have not had any success yet. I run a beta site that mimics the parent site in a subdomain that I have already moved from /site/ to / so I can test a lot of .htaccess configs.

Just to be sure: you want http://example.org/site/foo/bar/baz.php to go to http://example.org/foo/bar/baz.php, that is, to remove (via redirect) the /site prefix if it's there, but not touch the URL otherwise, right? If so, it depends on which server you're using:
If your server is Apache, you could use something like this in .htaccess:
RedirectMatch 301 ^/site/(.*)$ http://example.com/$1
If it is nginx, add this to the server {...} session of your site's file (usually symlinked inside /etc/nginx/sites-enabled):
location ~ ^/site/(.*)$ { rewrite ^/site/(.*)$ /$1 permanent; }
Here is a good explanation on how such pattern-based redirects can be set up in both servers.
This seems to be the working answer that I will go with. Basically, this needs put into the directory that you are wanting to redirect from, in my case, that was root/site/.

I assume the first rule ignores www? I'd love to work around that but am not sure exactly why it would have been created anyway. this will rewrite any URL that accesses that .htaccess file (inside your subdirectory) and direct you to the same URL without the subdirectory listing. It doesn't really work with the index.php rewrite tool, but that is fine because it still reaches the correct page.
If anyone has a better option for me with use with Joomla I would be glad to hear it. But, I tihnk this is what I will go with for now because it is giving me great results.

I wan't to Block an IP from accessing my website (I know how to do it)
But I wan't to redeirect him to another page to let him know he got banned.
The probleme is that he is banned from every subdomains to so he is not able to view the
banned.html page I made, I need help to fix this.

If you place a .htaccess file in a sub-folder, its directives will override the ones that you have in your site main folder... so if you just place another .htaccess file inside of your banned folder that allows him to view that page, all should be well. I'm also willing to bet there are exclusions you could place in your .htaccess file in the root folder, but this may be a simple option for you.

First, a little background on file setup. I am running a LAMP server that hosts multiple domains. I have staging and live sites on this server, under different directories under the web root.
examples
/webroot/live/site1/[public files]
/webroot/live/site2/[public files]
/webroot/stage/site1/[public files]
/webroot/stage/site2/[public files]
The domains for each of these go to the IP of the server, which points at the webroot directory. I have an .htaccess file there to load the appropriate content based on the http_host.
examples
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.site1-live.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /live/site1/$1 [PT,L,QSA]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.site1-stage.com [NC]

These work great for hitting the home page and any of the internal pages, even with the specific pages being like site1-live.com/view/123. Each site's htaccess handles those.
My issue (sorry it took so long to get here):
When I head to any subdirectory within a site, like www.site1-live.com/rss, the content loads just fine, but the URL changes to something like the following
http://www.site1-live.com/live/site1/rss/
Essentially showing the path from the webroot to the files.
How can I avoid this? I obviously want the url to remain www.site1-live.com/rss. Do I need an htaccess file inside the rss directory to block this somehow?

then have the whole url in the second line www.yourdomain.com/live/...

why do you need the QSA flag?
Anyway, what is happening to you is that mod_index (or whatever is serving you directories) is redirecting you www.site1-live.com/rss (without the ending /) to the equivalent URL with the ending /.
If you don't use mod_alias or something list that on the rewritten URLs, removing the PT should work as you expect.
Is it possible to set a default folder to access instead of a file like "index.html".
What I'd like to to is make it so that when a person visits my site they get redirected to a folder within the root of the domain. I am using a blogging engine and I need it to show up as the homepage but I don't want to install it in the root because I have other folders and files that need to be in the root directory. And I don't want to put them inside the blogging software's folder. I also don't want to use a 301 or 3XX redirect for SEO purposes.
If there's a way to do what I'm asking let me know. If not, let me know the best option otherwise.
Try this mod_rewrite rule:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^$ foo/bar [L]
This will rewrite requests to the directory where this rule is applied to to foo/bar. So if you put this rule in the .htaccess file in your document root and request http://example.com/, it will get rewritten to http://example.com/foo/bar.
