which linux to use for embedded-linux-qt 4 development? - linux

I want to start development using qt-embedded on my embedded device project. Can you tell me which linux should I use on my computer for development. Well, It should have VMWARE-tools support ( Fedora Core 11 does not have it ).

Operating System in Java

We a team of 10 people are set out to build an Operating System for mobiles/tablet from scratch.

Ever written an OS? How well do you know Linux kernel APIs? Do you know what's missing from Linux kernel to build a full featured OS? Answer those, they're your starting point.

"All mobile functionalities" is biased, what is "all"? Be specific.
Please make enough research and planning before you are set out to start such a difficult, yet excellent journey.
Make sure you know what you should do, right from the technologies you are gonna use, the architecture you are planning to establish upon, the pros and cons of all the approach, the issues with the current OS and your idea of correcting those issues.
With a site like SO for your help, it is never a question of feasibility, but you would require the determination and the perseverance to achieve it.

You have Android build on scaled down Linux Kernel and apk is build through java & sdk manager. So you have the things in your hand, similarly ubuntu touch is also coming. What you can do is to customize things as per your requirements as per your architecture.

How can I port an application based on OS X to Linux? It is closed source and working in Windows either. It is not wrriten in Objective C and doesn't use Cocoa.

If you saying that application working in Windows, so the easiest way is to use Wine to get start it on Linux.
I don't think it being closed source has any effect on porting it to Linux - it's the same anyway.
Just find alternatives to any win32-specific libraries or use a compatibility layer as necessary. Your team may however need to think very carefully about which distros they choose to support.
There is no easy path if you don't gave the source code as there are few Mac emulators. You might have some luck get OSX to run under a VM but Apple frowns upon that.
In the end it sounds like a ground up rebuild.

Can you Run Xcode in Linux?

Can you run Xcode in Linux? Mac OS X was based on BSD Unix, so is it possible?
From what I have heard, there is a MonoDevelop plugin that has an iPhone simulator.
The low-level toolchain for Xcode (the gcc compiler family, the gdb debugger, etc.) is all open source and common to Unix and Linux platforms. But the IDE--the editor, project management, indexing, navigation, build system, graphical debugger, visual data modeling, SCM system, refactoring, project snapshots, etc.--is a Mac OS X Cocoa application, and is not portable.

and you have a MACOS virtual machine. But according to Apple's EULA, you still need to run it on MacOS hardware :D But anywhere, here's one to all of you geeks who wiped MacOS and installed Ubuntu :D
Unfortunately, you can't run the editors from inside using SSH X-forwarding option.
I really wanted to comment, not answer. But just to be precise, OSX is not based on BSD, it is an evolution of NeXTStep. The NeXTStep OS utilizes the Mach kernel developed by CMU. It was originally designed as a MicroKernel, but due to performance constraints, they eventually decided they needed to include the Unix portion of the API into the kernel itself and so a BSD-compatible "server" (originally intended to process requests for BSD-compatible kernel messages) was moved into the kernel, making it a Monolithic kernel. It may be BSD compatible in the programming API, but it is NOT BSD.
The rest of the OS involved ObjectiveC (under arrangements between Stepstone and Richard Stallman of GNU/GCC) with a GUI based on a technology called "Display Postscript" ... sort of like an X Server, but with postscript commands. OS X changed Display Postscript to Display PDF, and increased the general hardware requirements 1000 fold (NeXT could run in 8-16MB, now you need GB).
Due to the close marriage of GCC and Objective C and NeXT, your best bet at running XCode natively under Linux would be to do a port (if you can get ahold of the source - good luck) utilizing the GNUStep libraries. Originally designed for NextStep and then OpenStep compatibility, I've heard they are now more-or-less Cocoa compatible, but I've not played with any of it in almost 2 decades. Of course that only gets you as far as ObjC, not Swift, and I don't know if Apple is going to OpenSource it.
You can run Xcode on Linux NATIVELY using Darling:

Once installed you can install Xcode via command-line developer tool following this link.
If you run VMware Player or Workstation (or maybe VirtualBox, I'm not sure if it supports Mac OS X, but may), and then Mac OS X Server (Client can't legally be virtualized). Of course, in this case you are running XCode on OS X, but your host machine could be linux.
If you cannot shell out thousands of dollars for a decent Mac then there is an option to run OSX and XCode in the cloud:

And no, there is no way to run Xcode on Linux.

Nope, you've heard of MonoTouch which is a .NET/mono environment for iPhone development. But you still need a Mac and the official iPhone SDK. And the emulator is the official apple one, this acts as a separate IDE and allows you to not have to code in Objective C, rather you code in c#
It's an interesting project to say the least....
EDIT: apparently, you can distribute on the app store now, early on that was a no go....
The easiest option to do that is running a VM with a OSX copy.
It was weird that no one suggested KVM.
It is gonna provide you almost native performance and it is built-in Linux.

If you really want to use Xcode on linux you could get Virtual Box and install Hackintosh on a VM.

If you want XCode on another OS, I suggest cloud computing. That way your app is being developed on a Mac and can be submitted to the App Store.

OSX is based on BSD, not Linux. You cannot run Xcode on a Linux machine.

Is ubuntu 9.04 good choice for embedded linux application development?

I want to change linux distro my Development(Host) Machine which I use for embedded development.
I cross-compile applications for many different processors. It is required for me to download different different libraries to evaluate their functionality/Performance/Stability on different devices , as well as on PC.
So Is ubuntu 9.04 a good choice for me?

If you are using gcc or other source based compiler that runs on linux then I would say yes, you want a linux distro, and ubuntu is currently the most popular/best. I would try to avoid distro specific things, drive down the middle of the road and you should be able to use any distro equally well.
That will largely depend on your needs. For an embedded system, I'd go with any distribution that sports a very small footprint and supports the necessary hardware.
Depending on your hardware, Debian might work fine. You could create your image with debootstrap which allows for fairly small customized installs. It still includes apt and other things which might not be desirable, although that could be to your benefit if you need to push out updates.
If you did go with Debian, you could most likely do all your development on Ubuntu and then push to your embedded system.
i use ubuntu for my host system and a chrooted gentoo install for building apps for an embedded target. I found gentoo was a good choice as it is source distributed and easy to select what version of a particular library is installed.
One thing that is good to know is that ubuntu and derivatives uses dash and not bash as /bin/sh. This confuses crosstools and can give you severe headaches.

Need some advise to begin programming on ARM (with linux) platform

I will have (maybe) to work soon on ARM platform hosting a linux distribution (I don't know which distribution ..).
I know the project concerns video streaming, but I can't tell you more. Actually I only received the announe, and meet nobody yet.
I've never worked on such platform. So the idea for me is to test before the project starts.
What would you advise me to undestand how works such platform ? Internet links? Tutorials? Tools
Morevover, as I don't have any ARM processor at home (well only my iPhone ..) Which virtual machine would you advise me? (I clearly don't want to lose time installing and testing every one of them.)

For a virtual machine that can emulate a ARM platform try QEMU. You can install a ARM-based Debian Linux distribution and tinker around with it. A google search on ARM, QEMU and Debian will get you started.
Also: Don't worry to much about the ARM CPU. You will use linux, so all the low-level stuff is already done for you. It's much more important to learn how the linux boot process works. How to install stuff ect. You will rarely (if ever) notice that you're running on a ARM device. The big difference to a PC running linux is, that the ARM will be a lot slower.
If you're looking for a real piece of hardware to play around with I suggest that you take a look at the beagleboard (www.beagleboard.org). It's cheap (around $150) and runs (among other things) various linux distributions.
With the beagleboard you'll get the whole linux cross compilation experience if you want (be warned: you'll pull your hair out).
I can't answer all of your questions, but there's a full port of Debian GNU/Linux on ARM. Works fabulously in my experience (I've tried it on a QNAP). Everything that's available in Debian works on QNAP now! So it's probably easiest to first try Debian tools and packages that come close to your project, and then continue from there.
