Turning off antialiasing in Löve2D - graphics

I'm using Löve2D for writing a small game. Löve2D is an open source game engine for Lua. The problem I'm encountering is that some antialias filter is automatically applied to your sprites when you draw it at non-integer positions.
love.graphics.draw( sprite, x, y )
So when x or y is not round (for example, x=100.24), the sprite appears blurred. The same happens when the sprite size is not even, because (x,y) points to the center of the sprite. For example, a sprite which is 31x30 big will appear blurred again, because its pixels are painted in non-integer positions.
Since I am using pixel art, I want to avoid this all the way, otherwise the art is destroyed by this effect. The workaround I am using so far is to force the coordinates to be round by littering the code with calls to math.floor(), and forcing all the sprites to have even sizes by adding a row or column of transparent pixels with the paint program, if needed.
Is there some command to deactivate the antialiasing I can call at program startup?

If you turn off anti-aliasing you will just get aliasing, hence the name! Why are you drawing at non-integral positions, and what do you want it to do about those fractional parts? (Round them to the nearest value? Truncate them? What about if they're negative?)
Personally I would leave the low level graphics alone and alter your code to use accessors for x and y that perform the rounding or truncation that you require. This guarantees your pixel art ends up drawn on integer boundaries while keeping the anti-aliasing on that you might need later.

Another possible work around may be to use math.floor() to round your integers as a cheap workaround.

So, the current version of Löve that I'm using (0.5.0) still doesn't allow to disable the antialias filter, but the feature is already in the SVN version of the engine.

change max steepness of slope character can climb godot

I am making a platformer game with all the basic code that is usualy found in godot platformers(kinimaticbody2d,move_and_slide, etc). the problem is that the character can climb really steep slopes which I dont like.
for example the character can move up the slope shown in the picture simply by pressing left(no jumping) he just slowly slides up
but when i make the slope just a little bit steeper the character cant scale the slope.
my question is there a way to set the maximum angle of a slope that a character can climb? thx in advance
If you are using move_and_slide you need to:
Specify an up_direction vector, which goes into the second parameter of move_and_slide. Without it, everything is considered a wall, and no sliding happens. Since, you are experiencing sliding, I suspect you already have this.
And specify floor_max_angle float, which goes into the fifth parameter of move_and_slide. This controls how inclined can be a surface and still be considered a floor/slope. If a surface is more steep that this angle, it will be considerad a wall, and no sliding happens. The angle is measured between the normal of the surface and the up_direction vector provided.
By default the value of floor_max_angle is 0.785398 (it is in radians, by the way) which is equivalent to 45º.
The situation you are suggest you are using a number closer to a quarter turn (i.e π/2 - approx 1.57 - radians). Probably something like 1.2 or 1.3? You want a smaller value.
By the way, you can convert from radians to degrees with rad2deg and viceversa with deg2rad.
I'll quickly go over a couple more issues you may find along the way:
The character slides down when idle due to gravity. To prevent this, you want to set stop_on_slope to true. This is the third parameter of move_and_slide.
The character have jitter and move more than desired when going down the slope with user input (caused by very little jumps usually perceived as jitter). And this is why you would want to move_and_slide_with_snap, which has an extra snap vector parameter which allows you to specify a direction the character should stick to the ground while moving. By the way, you may want to use get_slide_collision to figure out on what surface the character did slide, if any, and what is its normal.

How does Skia or Direct2D render lines or polygons with GPU?

This is a question to understand the principles of GPU accelerated rendering of 2d vector graphics.
With Skia or Direct2D, you can draw e.g. rounded rectangles, Bezier curves, polygons, and also have some effects like blur.
Skia / Direct2D offer CPU and GPU based rendering.
For the CPU rendering, I can imagine more or less how e.g. a rounded rectangle is rendered. I have already seen a lot of different line rendering algorithms.
But for GPU, I don't have much of a clue.
Are rounded rectangles composed of triangles?
Are rounded rectangles drawn entirely by wild pixel shaders?
Are there some basic examples which could show me the basic prinicples of how such things work?
(Probably, the solution could also be found in the source code of Skia, but I fear that it would be so complex / generic that a noob like me would not understand anything.)
In case of direct2d, there is no source code, but since it uses d3d10/11 under the hood, it's easy enough to see what it does behind the scenes with Renderdoc.
Basically d2d tends to have a policy to minimize draw calls by trying to fit any geometry type into a single buffer, versus skia which has some dedicated shader sets depending on the shape type.
So for example, if you draw a bezier path, Skia will try to use tesselation shader if possible (which will need a new draw call if the previous element you were rendering was a rectangle), since you change pipeline state.
D2D, on the other side, tends to tesselate on the cpu, and push to some vertexbuffer, and switches draw call only if you change brush type (if you change from one solid color brush to another it can keep the same shaders, so it doesn't switch), or when the buffer is full, or if you switch from shape to text (since it then needs to send texture atlases).
Please note that when tessellating bezier path D2D does a very great work at making the resulting geometry non self intersecting (so alpha blending works properly even on some complex self intersecting path).
In case on rounded rectangle, it does the same, just tessellates into triangles.
This allows it to minimize draw calls to a good extent, as well as allowing anti alias on a non msaa surface (this is done at mesh level, with some small triangles with alpha). The downside of it is that it doesn't use much hardware feature, and geometry emitted can be quite high, even for seemingly simple shapes).
Since d2d prefers to use triangle strips instead or triangle list, it can do some really funny things when drawing a simple list of triangles.
For text, d2d use instancing and draws one instanced quad per character, it is also good at batching those, so if you call some draw text functions several times in a row, it will try to merge this into a single call as well.

Three.js ParticleSystem flickering with large data

Back story: I'm creating a Three.js based 3D graphing library. Similar to sigma.js, but 3D. It's called graphosaurus and the source can be found here. I'm using Three.js and using a single particle representing a single node in the graph.
This was the first task I had to deal with: given an arbitrary set of points (that each contain X,Y,Z coordinates), determine the optimal camera position (X,Y,Z) that can view all the points in the graph.
My initial solution (which we'll call Solution 1) involved calculating the bounding sphere of all the points and then scale the sphere to be a sphere of radius 5 around the point 0,0,0. Since the points will be guaranteed to always fall in that area, I can set a static position for the camera (assuming the FOV is static) and the data will always be visible. This works well, but it either requires changing the point coordinates the user specified, or duplicating all the points, neither of which are great.
My new solution (which we'll call Solution 2) involves not touching the coordinates of the inputted data, but instead just positioning the camera to match the data. I encountered a problem with this solution. For some reason, when dealing with really large data, the particles seem to flicker when positioned in front/behind of other particles.

It turns out that my near value for the camera was too low and the far value was too high, resulting in "z-fighting". By narrowing these values on my dataset, the problem went away. Since my dataset is user dependent, I need to determine an algorithm to generate these values dynamically.
I noticed that in the sol#2 the flickering only occurs when the camera is moving. One possible reason can be that, when the camera position is changing rapidly, different transforms get applied to different particles. So if a camera moves from X to X + DELTAX during a time step, one set of particles get the camera transform for X while the others get the transform for X + DELTAX.
If you separate your rendering from the user interaction, that should fix the issue, assuming this is the issue. That means that you should apply the same transform to all the particles and the edges connecting them, by locking (not updating ) the transform matrix until the rendering loop is done.

Preventing pixelshader overdraw for a single ERG

Background
Using gluTess to build a triangle list in Direct3D9 from a GDI+ DrawString(..) path:
A pixel shader (v3.0) is then used to fill in the shape. When painting with opaque values, everything looks fine:

At certain font sizes, if the color has an alpha component (ie Argb #55FFFFFF) we begin to see these nasty tessellation artifacts where triangles may overlap ever so slightly:
At larger font sizes the problem is sometimes not present:
Using Intel's excellent GPA Frame Analyzer Pixel History tool, we can see in areas where the artifacts occur, the pixel has been "touched" 3 times from the single Erg.
I'm trying to figure out how I can stop my pixel shader from touching the same pixel more than once.
Other solutions relating to overdraw prevention seem to be all about zbuffer strategies, however this problem is more to do with painting of a single 2D triangle list within a single pixel shader pass.
I'm at a bit of a loss trying to come up with a solution on this one. I was hoping that HLSL might have some sort of "touch each pixel only once" flag, but I've been unable to find anything like that. The closest I've found was to set the BLENDOP to MAX instead of ADD. But the output is not correct when blending over other colors in the scene.
I also have SRCBLEND = ONE, DSTBLEND = INVSRCALPHA. The only combination of flags which produce correct output (albeit with overdraw artifacts.)
I have played with SEPARATEALPHABLENDENABLE in the GPA frame analyzer, which sounded like almost exactly what I need here -- set blending to MAX but only on the "alpha" channel, however from what I can determine, that setting (and corresponding BLENDOPALPHA) affects nothing at all.
One final thing I thought of was to bake text as opaque onto a texture, and then repaint that texture into the scene with the appropriate alpha value applied, however this doesn't actually work in this project because I also support gradient brushes, where stop values may contain alpha, meaning either the artifacts would still be seen, or the final output just plain wrong if we stripped the alpha away from the stop values prior to baking to a texture. Also the whole endeavor would be hideously expensive.
Any hints or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.
The problem you're seeing shouldn't happen.
If two of your triangles are overlapping it's because you've placed the vertices in such a way that when the adjacent triangles are drawn, they overlap. What's probably happening is that these two adjacent triangles share two vertices, but each triangle has its own copy of each vertex that's been calculated to be in a very, very slightly different position.
The solution to the problem isn't to try and make the pixel shader touch the pixel only once it's to use an index buffer (if you aren't already) and have the shared vertices between each triangle actually share the same vertex and not use one that's ever-so-slightly not in the same place as the one used by the adjacent triangle.
If you aren't in control of the tessellation algorithm being used you may have to run a pass over the vertex buffer after its been generated to detect and merge vertices that are within some very small tolerance of one another. Even without an index buffer, a naive solution would be this:
For each vertex in the vertex buffer, compare its position to every other vertex in the rest of the vertex buffer.
If two vertices are within some small tolerance of another, replace the second vertex's position with the position of the one you are comparing it against.
This should have the effect of pairing up the positions of two vertices if they are close enough that you deem them to be the same.
You now shouldn't have any problem with overlapping triangles. In everyday rendering two triangles share edges with each other all the time and you won't ever get the effect where they appear to every-so-slightly overlap. The hardware guarantees that a sample point is either on one side of the line or the other, but never both at the same time, no matter how close the point is to the line (even if it's mathematically on the line, it still fails on one side or the other).

Antialiased composition by coverage?

Does anyone know of a graphics system which handles composition of multiple anti-aliased lines well?
I'm showing a dependency diagram and have a bunch of curves emanating from a point. These are drawn anti-aliased in the usual way, of blending partially covered pixels. So if two lines would occupy the same half of a pixel, the antialiasing blends it to 75% filled rather than 50% filled. With enough lines drawn on top of each other, the pixel blend clamps and you end up with aliased lines.
I know anti-grain geometry has algorithms for calculating blends which cater for lines which abut, and that oversampling might work, but are there any other approaches?
Handling this form of line composition well is going to be slow (you have to consider all the lines that impinge upon each pixel using a deferred rendering approach). I doubt that there are many (if any) libraries out there that will do it for you.
The quickest and easiest method (and possibly the only realistic and cost effective solution for your case), which will work with virtually any drawing library would be to supersample it - draw to an offscreen bitmap at much higher resolution (e.g. 4 times wider and higher, with lines of 4 pixels width. Disable antialiasing when drawing this as it'll only slow it down) and then scale the result down with bilinear filtering. The main down-side is that it uses a lot of memory for the offscreen bitmap.
If you need an existing system that gets antialiased lines "visually correct", you might try using one of several existing RenderMan-compliant 3D renderers. The REYES algorithm, which many of these renderers use, works by breaking up primitives into micropolygons, then sampling them at several random point locations within each pixel. So even if you have a million lines collectively obscuring 50% of a pixel, the resulting image value will show roughly 50% coverage. (This is, for example, how the millions of antialiased hairs are drawn on characters in many animated movies.)
Of course, using a full-blown 3D renderer to draw 2D lines is like driving nails with a sledgehammer. You'd need a fairly pathological scenario for the 3D renderer to be any more efficient than simply supersampling with a traditional 2D renderer.
It sounds like you want a premade drawing library, which I do not know of.
However, to answer your question of knowing any approach that would work, you can consider a pixel to be a square. You can then approximate any shape that you draw as a polygon that intersects the pixel box. By clipping these polygons against the box of the pixel and against each other, you can get a very good estimate of the areas associated with each color that intersects the pixel for accurate antialiasing. This is, of course, very slow to calculate and is not suitable for interactive drawing.
